Disadvantage of starting new VS Legacy Char? Follow

Hi everyone, I've been kind of in a dilemma lately. I have a legacy char from 1.0 that is maybe lvl28 at his highest and i have considered starting fresh when ARR is released. What I'm wondering is, will i be giving anything up by doing this? I heard legacy chars get some kind of tattoo or something and not sure what else. Besides having to start over again, will i be giving up any special benefits from my original character? Thanks.

Definitely start over! It will only take a few days to get to 28, and you won't be 22 levels (and exponentially more xp) behind 3/4 of the server.

It will probably be a much more rewarding experience to start in a fresh land, with all new people to meet!

That was definitely my thinking! So are you saying that i wouldn't be giving up any Legacy benefits by doing this?

Not to frown on level 28 but the only thing good about legacy is the left over 1.0 wealth and high skills you can tap into. If you don't have embarrassing items and wealth that you can't part with, start over. Beta 4 or launch "I think" has the option to change your legacy character looks once. Spending money in ARR seems like it's going to be retainer thing for +1 and materia addicts since quest payout so much.

Oh i was by no means hanging onto my legacy char for his level, i thought I would lose something exclusive to that char if i did. Like a reward of some kind, but if that isn't the case then I would gladly start fresh. Thanks

Basically This:
Do you have friends on your legacy server or on a non-legacy server?
If so, start there.

Do you have any special items that you cannot get otherwise (like Sprint Shoes or whatever the bonus item was for FFXI link)?
If this is important, keep your legacy.

Do you have more than one crafting/gathering classes over level 10.
It might be worthwhile for you to keep your legacy rather than re-level-up those abilities.

Is it important for you to be able to find player made gear at all levels at launch?
If so, consider legacy. New servers will have a shortage of HQ gear until the market begins to stabilize and populate with crafters.

Do you want to be involved in the economy and attempt to control/profit off of certain areas of the grind?
Consider playing on a new server.

I don't believe so, I'm pretty sure that kind of thing is all saved on your account rather than the character. Although there may be something legacy characters get that I don't know about... but think about it this way, on a legacy server, EVERYONE will have that item. On a fresh server, NO ONE will have that item lol. So you won't miss the item regardless Smiley: lol

I've pondered whether to start fresh or keep my legacy character. Bear in mind I only have a 30 and 44 class so no 50's. I realized any amount of time saved because you have a class past 20 is better than starting fresh. And now I explain why:

1) Duty finder makes server isolation non-existent
2) The game is solo-based outside of duty finder.
3) People don't talk randomly in shout

So now ask yourself, what exactly are you missing out on by joining a legacy server? If your answer is, "to see tons of new players around me" then thats redundant because of the above. It just does not affect you in any way.

That exactly. Most of the feelings behind the OP's question mirror that for people that ask. Starting fresh has that fresh start feel, but it comes with lack of readily available materials for reasonable prices. You're either going to have to level up and craft it yourself, or wait for someone else to hit 50 and do it and pay their higher than average fee. (Which is fair, because they took the time to level it up and you didn't)

I don't know if people remember, but legacy characters get a 'slightly' different story because they "survived". That's about all you're going to miss out on.

Lol that is a good point. Never thought of it that way. If there really was something exclusive it would probably be saved on my account like you said.

if I delete my 1.0 guy i'm 99% sure my rarely CE onion helm and much used sprint shoes will be on anyone new I make. The helmet is listed on my account page, it's been so long I don't remember why I got the shoes but I used them once a day.

Unless it's a titan weapon I don't see any reason to keep playing legacy.

That's correct. All those promo goodies will arrive in the mail on any new character you create. I got my onion helm and asuran wristbands on my beta 3 characters, despite not having played in over 2 years or so. They are account wide items.

I don't think there's a disadvantage to starting new. In fact, I think it's quite the opposite. We don't know for sure yet, but people who are already are going to be looking to do endgame content. We're not sure that much of it exists or how much the game will launch with, but my guess is they've put more effort into things aimed at newer players. I'd say that new players are probably at an advantage because whatever they do make for the legacy players will set up newbies for a somewhat established endgame when they arrive.

The story will be slightly different. Also, you won't have any "Dated" gear, as it's discontinued. If you stopped at 28, all your gear is probably "Dated."

(Dated gear is statistically inferior to normal gear and only for cosmetic purposes....)

I mean, it don't matter really. But do play on a server your friends are on regardless. Don't worry about the "fresh vs legacy" server debate. You're going to be playing with everyone via the duty finder, and I guarantee that lower level items are going to be 10X more expensive on a new server with no established economy where the demand for such items exceeds the supply... so if you want to make oodles of money by ripping people off by selling bronze haubergeons for 150k, new server for you.

This is interesting. I've got a legacy char. She's got the Hermes Shoes (http://ffxiv.zam.com/en/item.html?ffxivitem=8080512 ) and two other items. Tested this in beta phase 3. You got these if you've had an active subscription to FFXI at the time of creating the character. I've still got an active subscription at this time. Now when I created new characters they've got the helmet and the armguards (1.0 CE items) but not the hermes shoes.

I'm not too hung up on these shoes. I wouldn't miss them if they're not going to show up. But it is a bit irritating.

Edit: as an aside I remember that you could put tooltips to items from the ZAM database into your posts. I couldn't find how to do this. Is this still possible?

I would start new and bring in your legacy character when you get world transfers and mule what the legacy char has.

Trying to remember how to do that...

Hermes' Shoes

This works. Just use the link tags. Hovering over it should show the item.

Obviously the database is out of date though, we're working on it!

FYI, the Hermes' Shoes now give unlimited sprint in towns. It was pretty awesome. (unlimited in that it reduces the recast of sprint, so while wearing them, sprint is ready as soon as the effect wears.)

If Loadstone is right we still have the Gobbue mount just not the horn key item. I saw many ppl with Him/Her/it in beta 3. I played that beta blind so i never got one, but it's still in ARR for those of us that had one. That big chocobo speed walking thing will annoy new players more than the creepy little things i saw following ppl in town.

IF you don't use your legacy char, you don't have it, can't get it
