I think most people that dislike how BRD plays now thought they could exploit it again for FFXIV for an easy endgame slot. BRD was a horribly boring job in FFXI, I'm glad they make BRD's actually do something now other than sit on their hands.
Personally I never thought that BRD was boring, but maybe I was playing it wrong. I was always doing something in parties. I would cast Damage Buffs on the DPS only and then swing around and get the tank buffed with something they needed. Then I would get a single Ballad spell on the mages and then give the healer, blm, ranger, tank, and myself each +X to our preferred stat. This was along side healing, debuffing, and casting finale. Toward the end I was even sleep pulling for my party.
I found the class very rewarding and there was very little down time for me. I only got it to around 50 though and regret never taking it to end-game. I took pride in the job, being sure to have every possible +1-2 instrument i could get my hands on. I would have to say that next to PUP it was probably my favorite class to play. For a while I was leveling with my RL RDM friend and we were unstoppable XD.
