I'm a square kid. Crono Trigger was the first RPG I completed, then FF3(6).
Well, technically you were an Enix baby then :p I'm almostt 100% positive Chrono Trigger was a collaborative effort between Sakaguchi (producer, creator of Final Fantasy), Horii (creator of Dragon Quest/Warrrior), and Toriyama (Dragonball artist). I think they referred to it as the Dream Team but it's been years and years for me so I can't remember -- that could have been for a different game.
Dragon Warrior wasn't only my first RPG it was also the very first NES game I've ever played. I don't think I touched Mario until months later (probably closer to a year) just because I loved DW and ended up going through it several times.
As far as Enix games? 7th Saga (NA version's so much harder it isn't funny), Actraiser (the score in the game alone made it worth playing), E.V.O., the Soul Blazer "trilogy", and of course the entire DQ/DW series.

Yeah, SNES really was the golden era of RPGs in terms of choices. Just looking at sheer release numbers alone between NES, SNES, PSX, PS2, and PS3 era (not necessarily just the console themselves) and there was more during that time than any others.
