SE to add flying mounts in (first?) xpacFollow

#1 Aug 15 2013 at 1:37 PM Rating: Default
this was taken from the phase 3 feedback devpost

We are thinking about having flying mounts that actually fly in the sky be a part of a large expansion in the future. We can't promise a time period, but this is something quite important to us, so please look forward to a future announcement.

Edit: Here is the link to a lengthy dev post http://forum.square-enix.com/ARR-Test/threads/99352-FFXIV-A-Realm-Reborn-Beta-Phase-3-Player-Feedback-Status-List?p=1221404#post1221404

I was here pointing out the fact there will be flying mounts. I did find it interesting they said no chat bubbles ever due to memory issues, is this because of the PS3 holding it back?

The memory issues they are referring to is that players have forgotten how irritating chat bubbles are.

I was responding to your comment about needing beta forum access, not the fact that you started a thread specifically about flying mounts.

I'll just wait and see what they come up with. I wasn't thrilled about the unicorn mount, but the Coerl made up for it. Hopefully they can find something from FF canon for it, hell personal Airships would be pretty *********

Unicorn does seem silly, but not as silly as a choco wearing a blm hat.

I'm probably in the minority here, but I actually don't have a problem with flying mounts. I quite enjoyed my flying mount in WoW. I also liked that you could only use it in certain areas, which I think is how it should be. People say it ruins immersion and stops you from enjoying the details in the game, but I actually thought the opposite in WoW. I would spend HOURS just flying around, mining nodes, and enjoying the scenery from above. I wouldn't be opposed to flying mounts in ARR, but I'd like them to only be available in certain areas... like maybe the new continent has a special breed of chocobos that learned to fly due to high altitudes or something, but they can only effectively breath on this continent. There are definitely ways to fit it into the story without making it unbelievable.

Also, personal airships would be epic.

Some Micro Machine airships for the Lalafell and Maibatsu Monstrosities for the Roegadyn.

Aha! Thanks so much for the idea. I finally have a fitting avatar again. That is just my kind of silly!

When flying mounts were first announced in WoW I was excited, after playing that game for so long with them.. I'm on the opposite end of the spectrum. I think they diminish multiple facets of the game.

I couldn't imagine having flying mounts in FFXI, I think it would have done exactly what it did to WoW, making the world feel a whole lot smaller, and decreasing the difficulty and immersion of the game. Traveling to a far and dangerous place should feel like an epic journey, throw in flying mounts and it's just a hop, skip, and a jump away. I respect the opinions and views of those who would disagree with me but I don't think there's anyway I could be convinced that flying mounts are a good thing for a game like this. And they are even worse for a game like WoW with world pvp being completely ruined.

It's driving me nuts how many people think a unicorn doesn't fit in final fantasy.

Dude it was a summon in FF V and FF VI and also made an appearance in the tactics games. The item unicorn horn has also shown up in several other final fantasy games.

The only thing WoW did "wrong", and it's a very subjective wrong that may not be wrong at all, was allow flying pretty much everywhere and coupled that with portals for quick travel. WoW learned from that mistake, and I'm sure SE has by now as well. I think flying fast-travel works pretty well for travel though "old" or dated content, and forcing you to the ground feels right for current content.

I didn't say it wasn't, I said I wasn't thrilled with it. It just doesn't look like it fits with the other mounts in my opinion.

At first i thought a flying mount would be cool, granted i do love the flying eye mount, but after reading Phoenix's comment, i have to agree. The journey was part of the fun, if i can literally hope on my flying whatever and go somewhere in a minute or two, i would feel that the world is incredibly small.

Hopefully if they do add flying mounts they will be area specific. They were nifty in TBC and WotLK because they made interesting areas that incorporated being able to fly around. I hated it when they allowed flying mounts to be used in the Vanilla areas. It made the world feel much smaller and more often than not you just flew up really high and ignored the scenery to get to your destination quickly.

All of the loading between zones the current areas would not be ideal for flying mounts, especially considering that by themselves they are all fairly small. I do however think it would be awesome to gain access to flying mounts in some giant zone with floating islands, sort of like Riverne. Just so long as they still continue to add non flying zones as well. They could do quite a few awesome things with the idea, hopefully they don't muck up previous areas in the process.

I was bummed about the addition of flying mounts in WoW because WoW has open world PvP, and flying ruined that. ARR however is a PvE game, so why not? Then again, the zones are small and zoned, so I don't see much of a point either. How would they add flying mounts and combat the invisible wall issue?

I'd like to think that if they're investigating flying, they're also looking into merging the game into a larger, seamless zone than the broken up zones it has today. Yoshi said in an interview a long time ago that they didn't have the time to rebuild the game into a seamless world, but it's a possibility with a large future patch or expansion to rewrite and merge some zones. I agree though, it doesn't seem like something worth doing with the zone sizes we have coming up for launch.

I'm pretty sure that the Ahriman mount will just hover, giving the impression of flight, but still being restricted to ground travel.

Brings back memories of that Southpark WoW episode with the PvP.
