Dodging Red Shapes of DoomFollow

I'm just wondering what are the best strategies for avoiding Area of Effect attacks that are marked as a red shape on the ground. What I've discovered:

Cone attack (emanating from mob) - Just run through the attacker (W on default keyboard), you'll get through unimpeded.
Rectangle attack (emanating from mob) - A brief strafe (Q or E on default keyboard) will steer you clear.

But the circle attacks give me trouble. It seems like the shortest route is to back up, but using S to do so moves you at a fraction of normal walking speed. It's not bad for a small circle, but for a large one that might get you killed. If there's a way to instantly turn around, that would help, but all I know to do is use A or D to spin around slowly which isn't expeditious either. I'd love to hear of a better way.

How do you avoid the Red Shapes of Doom?

If you change control to legacy type, you will turn and run rather than walk backwards when using "s"

Cone, run thru. However, I hit my action key a little too soon which flipped me back to facing the mob while still running and ran right back into the AoE... lesson learned.
Rectangle, again, run thru.
Circle, strafe right or left - backing up will get you hit if you don't have a great connection.

How do you avoid the AoE on some of those FATEs that spawn mobs in a small area and you are melee is my question. I spend the entire FATE running out of circles rather than stabbing/punching stuff.

strafe seems to work best for circle AoEs. As for fate aoe spams, I tend to just constantly be moving, attacking, and watching the ground. I also tend to swap targets with almost every attack so that I can land damage on as many mobs as possible for max XP gain, so I'm almost always running around like a chicken with his head cut off.

I generally keep a finger on the right mouse button to swivel the camera, then if you're fighting a mob with circle based AoEs you can strafe sideways, but move directly backwards for the shortest possible path away from the mob. It's also a good technique as a tank because it doesn't change the mobs orientation after he casts the spell. For cone and rectangle I strafe sideways rather than going through for the same reason, as a tank you don't want that mob to potentially turn backwards and face the melee so I've just gotten used to always moving in a way that hinders them the least.

i like switching all movement to the number pad a la FF11. this makes it much easier to move/use skills. i changed all keybindings to looklike this (this is using legacy keyboard settings):

8 = up
4 = left
6 = right
2 = down
7 = toggle auto run
9 = toggle walk/run
5 = toggle 3rd/1st person
1 = strafe left
3 = strafe right
0 = can't remember, may have been target switching
- = open menu
/ = toggle weapon out/away
* = lock target
+ = jump (although it makes jumping anywhere but straight difficult, but this doesn't matter much)
Enter = accept/confirm

to go with this, i changed my camera rotation on the arrow keys beside the keypad. this lets my thumb control the camera while i'm moving. I have them set up invertedly but whatever feels best to you will work. Doing this lets your left hand rest on the left side of the keyboard allowing me to easily switch targets and talk in chat. my keyboard buttons look like this:

(these keys will also control the menu up/down left/right)
space = enter chat mode
w = switch target up
s = switch target down
a = switch target left
d = switch target right

shift w = toggle ALL
shift s = toggle ENEMY
shift a = toggle OTHER
shift d = toggle FRIEND

by not having to use your left hand to move, you can set your hot bar 1,2,3 to use normal, control or alt to select skils. my thumb can easily hit those buttons and space to chat. Keep in mind that the game is defaulted to just hitting the numbers or control, so you have to manually set alt for the 3rd skill bar. I use alt for the second and control for the 3rd is my preference.

i don't think i changed much else. maybe the way i open close menus and such because of the keybindings overlapping and whatnot. i find this setting much better than the default because it seperates movement and skill related functions. You guys can try it out. Before anyone says something about it, yeah i am trying to mimic FF11's control scheme, but thats because i found it the best. Even in games like aion i changed the keybindings like this because it was just easier for me.

People need to start learning to use their stuns to interrupt aoe abilities from mobs plain and simple.

Good point... unless it is on cooldown. As a CNJ though, I don't think I have an instant stun and most of my casts take longer. GLD gets something with their shield right? And I assume MRD has some axe thing.

In general yes, but in FATEs this isn't really an option sometimes. Sometimes you just need to know the best way to move because there aren't enough stuns in the world to stop those goblin f-ers and their bombs.

For those of us on CNJ, the best equivalent I can think of is hitting Esuna on the Tank consistently, other people in descending importance. (Triage!) Don't want to lose the heal cycle and have someone get popped because you *HAD* to cure a paralyze with only 3 seconds left on the DD.

Unfortunately, most mobs that use Aoe tend to use it faster than it comes off cooldown, so unless you are making a stun rotation, it's not really all that useful.
