Remember back when people used to think this game was doomed? I didn't think that, but some folks definitely did.
That said, who could have predicted such a massive population surge three expansions beyond ARR?

Hey I popped in because I saw this in my bookmarks... that happens about once a year or so.
FFXIV definitely didn't die. Christ it's so popular right now they had to stop selling copies of the game because the servers can't handle the load.
Every MMO is declared dead by the people that don't like it precisely because they don't like it and not for any reason based on data. I long ago lost count of the number of times FFXI was declared to be dead or "dieing" (sic). And they're about to celebrate their 20th anniversary. Not bad for a game that was apparently going down in flames *checks notes* 15 years ago. And FFXIV just keeps winning awards and getting higher and higher critic scores... yeah, it's definitely on its way out
