See this page for potential side effects of the merges. They're nothing game-stopping and mainly just minor inconveniences that are easily solved on the user's end and that the team has been unable to pinpoint the cause of.
These two merges will coincide with tomorrow's start date of Moonlight Enchantments. Due to this, Dave "Smokejumper" Georgeson has promised that the event will be extended:

These merges will finish all of the U.S. server mergers. The international mergers will be announced sometime after the first of the year.
