First I just want to clarify that English is not my native language ( I'm German ;) ) and I hope it's not that bad.
My name is Alex and I am quite bored from every available MMO now. One month ago I just started Rift but at max. level I haven't got that motivation to do anything.
One year ago I bought the EQ2 compilation for "The Shadow Odyssey". EQ2 was always on my mind because of its huge value of zones, quests, classes, races etc.
I really enjoy discovering hidden places or mysterious graves, I like different type of zones, deserts, swamps, forests etc.
I think I really could enjoa EQ2, its world and everything in there, but I am quite insecure if I can manage it.
My main anxiety is the missing "low-community" for dungeons, leveling together or things like that. I prefer chatting while leveling and I really dislike being lonely in an MMO. For sure I would ask tons of questions bout that but I don't know why, I am really stunned by EQ2 offer of new and unknown things for me...
Is it still possible for a new player to manage this things? Is there a community I can chat & play with? Or is the max. level a must to play together?
As I said, I am a German player but I think the population on German servers ( if there are German servers *lol* ) is very low... so I thought about playing on a more populated server...
Can you help me? Can you just fight my anxieties? I think EQ2 is it worth to be played, but I am really insecure...

Well, servers went through mergers this winter, and two of the German servers were part of it (more info). This greatly increased the populations on the servers, so there's a lot more grouping going on, at least on the U.S. ones. I'd presume that the German servers would be similar, it'd be worth checking out again at least. :)
While max level helps for getting frequent groups there's still plenty people who enjoy the lower level content. Some will switch to all AA and stay at lower levels. They've also added the Battlegrounds which gives some additional options for things to do.
Sometime today inactive accounts will be reactivated for a week, so if your account falls under that then at least come back and give it a go again. Try out different servers and see how things are to your liking. I won't pretend that the current populations make everyone happy, but from a personal standpoint I'm good with how my server (Everfrost) is now.
If you do want to try out a U.S. server, the most populated is Antonia Bayle, but the rest of them are very close behind post-merges.

If I want to use the reactivation of my account, what must I do? Buy a abo to get use of the 1 week free play time or how does it work? I am a bit confused now *g*

Just wait until your account shows as active. It sounds like some people are already seeing that, login to your account at http://www.everquest2.com/ (drop-down box that says Account, choose Subscription Info). Once that shows up as.. most likely "Pending".. you should be able to log in and get patched. :) You don't need to purchase anything for the free week (assuming that your account was inactive and qualifies of course), just wait for it to be activated.

I think the biggest change for new players is the lack of market for crafting. It is hard to finance a crafter by selling goods as you level. If you need to make money, harvest and sell the rares.
As for gaming, things have gotten easier. My biggest suggestion is go to the AA screne and set your slider to 75 percent. That means 75 percent of your adventure experience goes into building AA's. That will give you time to do quests in multiple locations without them turning grey.

ya once they started making you buy tokens for everything, crafting went right out the window. Now all their is is, some dude who harvested a huge bundle and he ain't selling cheap.

join Antonia Bayle (RP server) and join the guild The Sacred Bloodline. We love newbies and many members keep low lvl alts specifically to group with new members. Send Patheos a tell when all this downtime is over.
