Surprise Birthday Party - WoW theme!Follow

#1 Feb 29 2012 at 11:09 AM Rating: Excellent
I need some help. My husband is turning 40 and I am planning a surprise birthday party for him. He doesn't have any hobbies other than volleyball and being a HUGE gamer. He's been playing WoW for the last 7+ years (we've been married 10). Because he plays it so much (3+ hours a night)I have nick-named it "the widow maker". I don't mind because it's what he does for relaxation. Heck, I've signed up and joined this forum just to get help for this party! :) Anway... I thought that I could try to incorporate some ideas from WoW into the party in terms of decorations and such. I am having the party at a local restuarant's private room with a hot buffet, about 50 or so people. I know nothing about the game. I want to keep it somewhat simple (and not overly expensive) since I cannot do any of this in our home for preparation. Any ideas of what I could use as centerpieces, wall hangings, etc.? Any and all ideas would be great. I will be having this party in April as his birthday is right before Easter. I'm looking forward to some input!

Wait till he gets home, jump him from behind with a blunt object and steal his wallet. When he wakes up, repeat.

At least that was my experience on PVP servers ...

Ought to have at least one volleyball with a murloc painted on it in red paint or you're doing it wrong. Beyond that, more information could help us customize our recommendations to your husband. What faction does he play? What race is his primary character? Has he mentioned a particular zone or storyline he really enjoys?

Some basic ideas: Each race has a crest. Simple posters with the crest of the race of his primary character might be a good idea. Check out here for some images of them. Consider this link for some custom posters. You can even get them with images of his character(or get one for each of his heavily played characters).

Additionally, how much help do you have? Anyone with any kind of decorating or art skills?

Jinx has WoW themed wrapping paper as well as many WoW themed gifts. I have used the wrapping paper personally and can confirm that its quality is good (as opposed to the thin kind that rips when you actually try to wrap something in it). You would need to know his faction, but if you don't already know, you could always do a little spying over his shoulder and report back to us with what his character looks like and we can tell you which one he is. :)

A WoW action figure might make a fun cake topper (and post-party souvenir), and you can get some of them pretty inexpensively. Again, you'd probably need to know something about his character or preferences to know which one he'd like.

The Blizzard Store also sells Warcraft themed music, if you'll be playing any of your own at the party.

I'm kind of stumped about centerpieces. Jinx and the Blizzard store both have some mugs/steins that you could probably fill with candy or some such.

Ok fine, I'll do it.

You need to obtain this: http://www.wowhead.com/item=22279

I believe that he would appreciate that. It also has the effect of luring husbands away from the game.

The blizzard store is a good option. Nothing says 'I love you' more than a new flying mount :D

I got answers to your questions! I actually just sent him a text and told him that I had some students (I work in a middle school) who play and were asking me questions about what he does. I laid it on thick telling him they thought it was cool that he played. :)

Faction: Alliance
Race/Class: human warrior
Realm: Hyjal
Character is Chevenga

Hope that helps. I'm going to try and work on the wording for his invitation- giving it a little WoW twist since only about 20% of the people at the party will know what WoW is. That will be the hardest part of the whole thing. Especially since I need to get it done and in the mail in less than a week. Thanks for all the input so far.

I found some Ironforge mugs through Taverncraft that were 50% off. I can incorporate those somehow. Plus any of his WoW friends at the party can take one home as a favor. I'm going to get a couple of posters through the link that was shared as well. You all are awesome! I'll be checking back again later today.

How do I get an image of this murloc?
#12 Mar 01 2012 at 9:14 AM Rating: Excellent
If you google search "Murloc" you'll find loads of different photos of them. Here's a sample of one so you know what to look for

With a human for his main, he's given you more leeway than any other race for decoration, but at the same time not much in the way of focus. That said, there are a number of simple decorations you can make with some basic art skills. A bit of cutting, some spray paint and homemade stencils can whip up a bunch of these made of cardboard or foam pretty quickly. I'd go with the latter of the two myself, though either would make great wall decorations.

In addition, here's a link to his character. I'm not sure what kind of inspiration you can draw from it, but it's worth a shot. It appears that he's only transmogrified(changed the appearance for customization) of one of his items, the sword. That tells me he likes the look of it. Here's a 3D look at it in case it inspires something for you.

Other ideas he may get a kick out of:
-Theme the menu after one of these two Blizzard World of Warcraft Related April Fool's Day Jokes.
-Brewfest offers a number of exploitable ideas. Menu, outfits, whatnot. As a bonus, your non-WoW savvy guests will probably still enjoy the beer.

I linked the Horde wrapping paper - here is the Alliance.

His official city as a human is Stormwind; if you Google it or look on Blizzard's store or Jinx you'll find several Alliance and Stormwind related items. If you're doing music, it's my humble opinion (as a Horde person, no less) that Stormwind has THE coolest theme song. :)

And if you like the action figure cake topper idea, I believe there is a Human Warrior. I have to run at the moment but will see if I can edit this post to add a link later.

You are expected to report back to us and let us know what you did for your cool WoW party. :)

Edit: Here is the human warrior action figure. Don't know how inexpensively you'd be able to find it. There are plenty of other Alliance themed action figures as well.

It appears that Chevenga is also Guild Master of Gnomish Revolution.

It might be nice to find some of the real life members of that guild for his birthday if they happened to live nearby. Not sure how that could be done though. Maybe people in this forum who have toons in Hyjal could ping some of them, if our OP was ok with that?

He actually has some friends in the area that he plays with. And some a little farther away as well. He wanted to plan a dinner to meet with them but it fell through. I want to try and get their names so that I can invite them to the party for him to finally meet.

Your best bet is to either make a toon on the realm (of course, requiring you to either get the game or sneak onto his account and talk to them directly from his character) and search their guild roster to talk to the members there to see who lives closer to you, or if you're lucky, someone here can try to message someone in his guild for it =)

Why not encourage him to meet them in the next week or two? Then you can meet them, and let them know about the party.
There's no guarantee that the friends in your area are actually in his guild, and the more people knowing about it may ***** with your plans.

Invitation is done and mailed. I have ordered Ironforge steins/mugs (soldout out of Stormwind, but I'm looking at other sites to get). I'm also getting WoW music, having a poster made then framed for his main character and I'm working on foam shields like Poldaran recommended. Thanks for the links Poldaran! I have invited 8 people from his guild. We'll see how many can make it.

I'm very excited about this, but having to tell so many little white lies is already driving me crazy. It will be worth it, but we've got more than a month to go yet! Thanks for the help everyone.

Planning is going well. I found some shields at Toys R Us to use as part of the decor. there is a lion in the middle that I can remove. I will replace that with a piece of wood with a sticker on it showing the crest for "human" and "alliance", maybe one or two more. The wood will be painted to match the sticker.

I have ordered a couple custom made posters with his character Chevenga. I'm getting them framed and will display them at the party. He can them use them for his man cave.

I can't really figure out how to tie the cupcakes (no actual cake) into the WoW theme so I'm just making a couple of his favorite flavors - pineapple upside down cupcake and a rum & coke cupcake (his all time favorite drink).

I make the final choices on the catered hot buffet this week. So far he has NO clue. I hope it stays that way - only 2 1/2 weeks left!
