I just don't get the writers anymore.
Cataclysm, MoP, and now WoD... that's 3 Horde-centric expansions in a row. And they're adding MORE hordes on top of it. It's just stupid. It's a bad use of assets, and I'm not seeing many people online pleased at the idea of yet another expansion exploring Orcs. It's a good theme, but holy hell you have to change it up and explore other themes at the same time.
Then they decide to take a universally hated character and continue exploring his redemption story? Literally no one cares. No one. No one cares if Garrosh ends up good or bad. People were relieved he turned out bad, because they were happy it gave them the chance to kill him and be done with it. The percentage of players that would have had an issue with Garrosh being the final boss, even if he wasn't a bad guy, is like 1% lower.
And then, even though their sub numbers are plummeting and they really need to go big with some content people want to play, they decide to revisit old content instead of offer something epic and cool and featuring the major villains players have been waiting a decade to fight.
I KNOW who those characters they put on the slides are, because I read the goddamn books, and I don't care. Is your average player going to care who 7 assorted Orcs who should have been dead already in the timeline they've been playing in for a decade are? HELL NO. Because they weren't interesting enough to keep alive in the first place.
Meanwhile, they've been rapidly degrading likable characters and making them increasingly difficult to identify with, and killing off cast members that players actually liked.
I just don't understand it. At all. There seems to be no guiding principles, or desire to connect with their audience. It's the job of the writers to create openings into a narrative that are interesting and encourage players to dig deeper, not to punish players for bothering to get involved, or to make things as unrewarding as possible.
A timeline change is literally just one big **** you to the story so far. If you're going to introduce that element, it invalidates all the story that players have gone through. Because now it just HAPPENS that certain events remain the same.
But then you instantly get a crapton of plot holes. Why not stop Arthas from falling? Why not stop Ner'zhul from trusting the demons? Why not stop Kel'thuzad from studying Necromancy? Why not go back and warn Kil'Jaedan and Archimonde and Velen while their hearts are still pure?
No, instead you go back to one relatively insignificant moment, and change a relatively insignificant detail, for no good reason other than it sets up the dominos like you want them.
It's a pathetic plot device, and I'm actually angry now.
