I wouldn't call them equal, all things considered. Sure, they have a comparable amount of RAM. But we know far more about the PS4's innards than we do the XBone's.
The price point is a huge advantage for the PS4, as is the initial hype they've already generated. PS4 has generated a ton of pre-orders already, which gives them a much stronger position moving into the next generation for courting exclusive contracts, among other things.
They also haven't announced any details about the self publishing system they have in play. And considering their previous stance on the issue, it's unlikely this has been in development for a while. We know it won't be a launch feature, and we have no clue when it'll be available. If the buyer cares about indie titles, the PS4 is going to be far more attractive at launch. If it's going to take a while for Microsoft to get this feature out there, that issue will be compounded.
It's also worth noting that the PS4 is aesthetically the sleeker device. The XBone is about the side of the massive PS3, with the PS4 being much closer to the size of the PS2.
The integration with the Vita, as it stands now, blows away what Microsoft has mentioned with Smartglass. And they've also announced about as much in way of using your phone/tablet with the system as Microsoft has.
There might be limited backwards compatibility through cloud streaming, which might give you access to any titles you purchased digitally already, as well as open up the PSN store to new users.
After that, it's mostly the TV features vs. the Social Media features. I don't personally care about either and I'm not willing to comment on what gamers would prefer. That said, Microsoft's apparent focus on the former has definitely soured their relationship with the gaming community.
Can the XBone catch up? Probably. But I'm fully expecting a similar slow start scenario like the PS3 had.
