This confused me a bit. Is it FFXV or FF Versus XIII?

It was Versus XIII, but they decided to get lazy and rename it to XV. Now they don't have to create a new entry in the series till next year.

Well, if the rumors Kotaku reported months ago are true, what actually happened is that Versus was essentially scrapped, but its assets were imported into the existing FFV project. This allowed them to rebuild the game on their next gen engine, and be free of the brand constraints of the Fabula Crystal whatever line of games. So they can go new places with the story, don't necessarily have to use all the assets they designed for the Fabula line, etc.

And from what I'm seeing, I like it. I was always looking forward to the gritty style of the game.

Plus, anyone who hated the extreme turn towards theology that FFXIII took, this will likely be good news. It seems to be all about political conflicts, first and foremost, and less about divine intervention in human life. I miss the days where a lot of FF games were really about the things that people could do to each other, and for all the varied reasons behind them.

I liked FFXIII. I think it's exploration into humanities response to the conflict of Sisyphus to be really interesting. But at the end of the day, FF games are more interesting to me when mankind is to blame for mankind's woes.

Neat, thanks for the explanations. I will say that I was impressed with both the graphics and the gameplay so hopefully it can live up to the hype it's building.

That IS all rumor, to be 100% clear about that. But it's a believable rumor, particularly now that FFXV has been announced. I do feel like the art style has taken a slightly new direction (more "real" and less "fantasy," for lack of better words), and it's not surprising they took this opportunity, if the new engine supports larger environments and platforming in ways the old one wouldn't.

Right now, they just need to deal with the fallout from first announcing the game 6 years ago. Smiley: lol They really should have given more background into that process at the event, imo, but maybe SE has their own E3 presentation where they'll be discussing that.

Anyone I've talked to who is not a long time fan of Final Fantasy can't understand why they keep doing so many titles of the same number in the first place (FFX, X-2, XIII-1,2,3, Versus XIII). So again, I really don't see why people are throwing up such a fuss about them changing the name.

People can't understand why they're cashing in on their bestselling games to release sequels that are guaranteed profits?

The people you speak with are oblivious.

There seems to be this unnatural disconnect with gamers that seem confused as to why a company would favor profits. "Oh my God, I don't get why this game I didn't like but sold hundreds of millions of copies is getting a sequel! Everyone who I talk to (Note: Mostly people with similar opinions; Hence why they talk in the first place) didn't like it either!"

Actually after 13/14 A lot of people are leery of the brand. 13 sold a ton but fan reviews mostly hated it, we all know about 14. SE needs a good game as the next one. I think they saw what Versus was shaping up to be and said this is good enough to be a main line game lets rebrand it so that people think its going to be really good again.

for the record I bought 13 day 1 beat it and while I didnt find it the best I found it to be good enough. Certainly better than 2

Just as a fun aside the Mrs. hurried that clip over to me last night all excited and everything. We watched and discussed it and what not (It does look pretty cool).

Then she said "I never knew Square was a Japanese company."

FFXIII sold 6.6 million copies, and people were ******** about it online from the moment came out. FFXIII-2 sold... 3 million? I'd guess that Lightning Returns, which actually is looking pretty cool, will sell at least 2 million.

If you have 2 million people willing to buy THREE games it was a huge success. For comparison, Mass Effect 3 sold 1.5 million copies.

FFXIV is a MMO, and really shouldn't be used as a comparison. No one was thinking about XI when XII was being released.

If FFXV is anywhere near to that level of success, SE is going to be in a really strong position to move forward.

Really loud people ******** on the internet about how it wasn't FFVIII-2 aren't the core demographic anymore. SE is going to design and sell games that will sell now, not games that would sell well in 1998. That's the reality.

The vocal crowd are generally the people who WERE playing FF games in 1998. And SE isn't interested in abandoning them, but they also aren't interested in losing massive profits by serving them exclusively. They'll try to find a happy middle.

Either way, their goal is to sell the most games possible.

Thing is this is the same company that felt 2.2 Mil for Tomb Raider and 1.7 mil for Sleeping dogs was bad.

Trailer looks nice. And it inspired me to start playing XIII-2 again. It's time I finished it.

Weren't there some rumors about a HD remake of X a while back?

It's no rumor. They mentioned it in E3, and they showed Auron from FFX in the montage.

FFX/X2 is being remastered and released later this year for the PS3. It's available for preorder now.
Kingdom Hearts 1 Final Mix, Re:Chain of Memories, and the cutscenes from 358/2 days are being remastered and released for the PS3 later this year as well. Also available for pre-order, and you get a free KH artbook with it if you preorder. Under the name "Kingdom Hearts 1.5". I believe "2.5" is slated for PS3 release as well, KH2 Final Mix, supposedly remastered Birth by Sleep, and Re:Coded movies, similar to the 1.5 setup.

This looks more like a crappy action adventure game than an RPG, I'll pass. SE hasn't been able to release a decent FF game since 10 and this looks like it'll be the worst attempt yet.

IX or X

Does Lost Odyssey count?
If you want current-gen... could you wait until FFXV?

I guess, though, if you really want current-gen and not online, then XIII and XIII-2 are your only options.
XIII isn't terrible, but there is a 20 hour tutorial, which is where most of the complaints come from. The reviews were favorable on this one.
XIII-2 is a little better, but tends to go in the opposite direction. It's more open, but this makes things too disconnected as well. It's a sequel, but there is some background, so you're not completely lost if you were to pick this one up.

Usually XII is kind of thrown in there too, but this was for the PS2. It is pretty much offline-FFXI using FFX characters. I found most of the game enjoyable for a while, but I thought the quality dropped significantly near the end.

After Versus was announced years ago, all I ever remember hearing was Versus = FF + KH.
