This isn't about its name being weird, its about the name being confusing product-wise.
I don't think it'll make a difference. They're marketing to parents with young children who will likely break the thing, so price point is the biggest factor.
Yes, but they need those customers to understand what the device is. Meaning, that it is simply a 3DS without a 3D option. But it PLAYS 3DS games. But it's called the 2DS.
Considering a year (or whatever) past launch, Nintendo is still doing everything it can to make people understand that their new console is not a Wii peripheral, and does not play Wii games, I
definitely would not be downplaying that aspect from a marketing perspective.
And it's not like this is simple. You have DS games, DS XL games (or whatever that thing was called), 3DS games, and now 3DS/2DS games...
