When was the last time you looked down at your controller while playing a game? Did it work out particularly well, because I know that when I take my eyes off of the screen, bad things tend to happen.

In order to avoid forcing players to divide their attention between screens, a critical feature of the Steam Controller comes from its deep integration with Steam. When a player touches the controller screen, its display is overlayed on top of the game they’re playing, allowing the player to leave their attention squarely on the action, where it belongs.
I dunno. I am interested in trying this. I don't think it will be great for every game, but if it means I can play Civ 5 with a controller (or one of the many games out there that should work just fine with a controller but doesn't have the interface set up) - I will buy one even if I don't get a steam box.
In terms of the screen I am more weirded out by the fact you need to click it. My work foisted a blackberry torch on me once... clicky touch screens give me nightmares.
