So many options ... Newbie questions ... What is success?Follow

I have 250,000 ISK, two frigates, a few cool upgrades like afterburners ...

And I have no idea what to do! The tutorial was very good at teaching me to play the game, but now that I've gotten started, I'm lost!

Are there any good guides out there to sort of point me an a good direction? I don't even know what directions there are! What do you strive for?

How is success measured in EVE? I mean I know there is obviously more than one way - but what are the ways people strive to succeed?

Oh one other question - is it true that if you get "podded" and you don't have a clone, you basically have to start over?
#2 Feb 18 2007 at 12:37 AM Rating: Decent
Depends on your own goals I guess. I guess success is either measured by your wallet or how much space you own as an alliance (a group success). I don't personally feel like I'm competing with anyone so my own success is having enough isk to replace a ship when I lose it in pvp :)

I'd start with doing some easy fighting missions from nearby agents or doing some mining, either will get you started.

You'd lose some skills, I don't think you'd lose everything, I'm relatively certain that your clone gets better by default, just not ever good enough to keep all your skills unless you upgrade the clone.

What's your characters name? I'll send you a message in game if I see you on and try help you with any questions.

Success is whatever you deem it is. I have several ships, plenty of ISK to not worry, and am happy with where I am up until this point. What do you want to do? Run missions, mine, research and construction, or PvP. Once you answer that basic question you can make a decisions about your future and path within EVE. I'm a mission runner/miner, with very little desire for PvP. Finding a good corp is also very important.

Check your station, see what kind of agents are around. Start running missions for them, and eventually you can work your way up to bigger and better quality agents. It takes time. I've got a goal for 10.0 standing with every Caldari Navy agent I can find. It will be a long road, but it's what I want to do. In short, there is absolutely unlimited ways you can succeed in EVE.

If you get podded, and don't have an appropriate clone, you will lose your skills. Always keep your clone to a point where it will always keep the skill points you already have. It may seem expensive, but it's worth it when compared to the amount of time you've put in to your skills. Send me a message ingame and I'll see if I can't help get you started. Character name is Helvyn.

I dunno if what I'm doing is right, but baisicly I'm shooting for an initial career as a miner. I think I picked the wrong race for it (Minmatar), but I'm working with what I got.

I found a nice little system that doesn't get bothered too much, I sit there and mine. While I'm mining I'm training up so that I can use an actual mining ship. Once I can use a mining ship I'll start training to be a good fighter, and while that training is going on I'll be making more ISK for skills, implants, weapons, etc...

I'm sure you could fight some smaller pirates out of the box, but I just want to have a vast assortment of skills :)

PS: The learning skills maxed as soon as possible is a must. I got some advanced learning under my belt now, and went from needing 14 days to train a frigate skill down to 6 and it only took 3 hours to train up the learning I just bought so... it is a good investment as soon as you can afford it.

It's mostly where you want to go with the game. If you're still in an npc corp, I would suggest finding a player corp.

Hey Jord. I may be reacivating my account this weekend, so I'll look you up if I remember how to message people. I think my characters name was Sahn. I had only played for a month or so last time, and remember basically nothing.

If anyone reads this (I didn't want to start a new thread) can you refrsh my memory on two things:

1) How do you message others?
2) Which manuals (I forget what they were called) do you learn so that you may learn skills faster? I was working on 3 different types of skills sets, but I forget what the process is, or what they were called. I know this is vague but it's all I can remember.

Edit: Ok I was able to get on my old character, name is Sahn. The manuals I was speaking of were called 'Learning', 'Instant Recall', and 'Analytical Mind'. Are there any others I should have to help with learning skills.

I just bought a new Bantam as I had given away my ships last time when I quit. Time to remember how to mine =P

Any help is appreciated =P

You should eventually pick up all of the skill books in the learning sub-tab. It will greatly speed up training times.

As for messaging people, when in doubt right-click.

Learning skills:

Learning (2% increase in learning time per level). Get it to 4

Tier 1, rank 1 skill, get these to 4

Instant Recall (+1 mem per level)
Iron Will (+1 Willpower per level)
Analytical Mind (+1 Intelligence per level)
Spatial Awareness (+1 Perception per level)
Empathy (+1 Charisma per level)

Tier 2, rank 3 skills, get these to 4, require tier 1 skill at 4 to learn

Eidetic Memory (+1 mem per level)
Focus (+1 will per level)
Logic (+1 int per level)
Clarity (+1 perc per level)
Presence (+1 cha per level)

The reason to learn these is that all skills have a primary and a secondary attribute. The higher the stats are, the faster you learn the skills.

Implants also increase your stats, and come in variants from +1 to +5, sometimes with other bonuses.

In terms of what is success, success in EVE is achieving personal goals. I had goals of getting high standings with Gallente Federation Navy to get jump clones. Didnt get it, because I joined an alliance that let me get them anyway, although Im now working on that goal again.

My main current goal is to get better at PVP so I lose less ships in the wars we have going on. A friend of mine who started recently, his goal is to become an amazingly rich industrialist.

The trick with EVE is to find something you enjoy doing, be it mission running, building stuff, blowing people up, mining, and and set yourself a goal related to it.

Personally, Ive got enough ISK to keep me in ships for a long time :) and so I dont mind losing some while I learn to be a better PVP'er.

The basic rule of EVE is, dont fly anything you cant afford to lose. Keep that thought in mind, and you'll go far.

Getting podded without an updated clone doesn't make you lose all your skills. In my experiance, it's just one level of one skill. Usually the one that is the highest level and rank.

Losing all your skills would be a game breaker for most.

If you have a million skill points, and your clone only keeps 500k, then you will lose 500k skillpoints. That is why it is important to keep your clone above your skillpoint total.

SOrry Kastigir, Nizdaar's right on this one.

If your pod is destroyed (for whatever reason) while you have more skillpoints than the maximum your clone can preserve, there is a chance you will lose a rank from every skill, starting with the highest ranks and working on down. As Niz said, generally you lose a rank off your highest or few highest skills. I believe, although Im not sure, the higher the skill rank is, the more likely you are to lose at least one level of it.

Ive been podded with over 8 million skillpoints and a clone grade alpha, which contains 800,000 skillpoints. Ive still got over 8 million SP's.

[edit]Kastigir is right though, it IS very important to keep your clone up to date. Losing the highest level of your rank 1 skill would set you back a few days. For me, if I lost the highest level of my highest rank skill, Id have to train Battleship 5 again. No thankyou.

I stand corrected then. It is however cheaper to maintain your clone level, than to retrain a 5+ day skill.

There is no ultimate success in EVE like there is in other games. There are several paths to follow.

Pirate: kill people and take their stuff
Bounty hunter: Kill pirates with large bounties
Crafter: Build things and sell them
Miner: Rather boring, just mine asteroids
Mission runner: Run missions for NPC's
Big corporation member: Join a big corporation and help them take over parts of the galaxy

Smiley: laugh Sorry I just find this funny cause I believe that's the one everyone starts out with right? Was this before you knew about upgrading your clone? Depending on the cost of clones at higher grades it sounds like in some cases it might be ok to let your clone upgrade fall behind a bit?

Is it though? Let's say you get podded, and lose level 5 from Caldari Frigate. That's a 12+ day train for me. Is a few million ISK worth losing 12 days of training? Not in my opinion.

That's why I put a question mark after that sentance. I have another question; If you lose a level in ship command that puts you below the ability level for the ship you are currently using, does that automaticly make you unable to fly that ship agian till you releanr that ability? My guess would be yes.

I've had my ship blown up before but have not been podded yet. I was killed by another player but he didn't pod me. Are there penalties for podding people or was this person just being nice?

Simply a case of forgetting to get a new clone after getting podded. Didnt lose too much though.

In high and low sec space, podding someone gives you a huge sec status hit, far larger than the small one you get for aggressing someone.

In 0.0, which is where I lose most ships and clones, there are no penalties for it.

Cant speak as to the motives of the person that didnt pod you, could be any number of reasons.

If you lose the rank of a skill needed to fly a ship or use a module, yes, you will have to retrain before you can use it again.

Its NEVER worth letting your clone fall behind. If I was to lose the highest rank of a skill, Id be losing Battleship V. Thats a 44 day training time with +3 implants and good learning skills.

Not letting that happen

I've been podded once in 0.0 space. Had an appropriate clone and lost nothing. Didn't even lose much in the way of ships either. Oil, if you were in high-sec it's nigh impossible to be podded. Concord will come down on your *** fast if you pod someone.

I see. I have another question. I was doing a mission last night and this is what happened:

Mission- Kill all pirates
bonus time ending on March 28, 2007 2:04 AM.

I was doing the mission. It was a bit tough with my starter ship and they destroyed it so I upgraded a little bit to a better frigate. I completed the mission with time to spare. It was around 11:00 PM on the 27 of Mar. On my way back I looked at the journal to see how much I would be making and it said that the time for the bonus has ended and I would not recieve it. Why would it tell me this if I still had three hours left? Was it because I had my ship destroyed or do the clocks run on PST (I live on the east coast)?

I believe the clocks run on GMT. In the lower left hand corner is the server time, and that's what the mission timers run off of.

The in game clock is indeed on GMT (you wouldnt believe how many Brits dont know that England ISNT on GMT at, daylight savings puts us on BST) and all times given in missions and suchlike are the time according to the in-game clock, which is, as Kastigir said, in the bottom left corner of the screen.

There really isn't a good reason not to have a clone to cover yourself. As you progress, gathering SP, you'll also be gather wealth unless you make a lot of mistakes, which can happen. Generally speaking though, when you're purchasing a clone upgrade for more than a million, you'll almost certainly have more than enough to purchse it.

There's a clever way to accomplish instantaneous transport from one side of the universe to the other. I don't mean jumpclones, I mean clone jumping. :D There is a difference, I swear.

If you join a player corp and they're way out in 0.0 space, 80 some jumps from your Empire space stomping grounds, you can reassign the location of your clone to that corp's station in 0.0. Doing this, and then killing yourself [ self-destructing in an ibis, and then self-destructing your pod ], you'll wake up way out in 0.0. This works very well if you need to get somewhere a rediculously long distance away, get there really fast, or both. :D The main thing to keep in mind, making sure you buy a new clone as soon as you've arrived at your destination, is that any implants your character had are now gone... forever. It might be too high of a cost to pay, but... sometimes... it isn't. ;D Jumpclones are nice, cost 150,000ISK to install, but you need to remember to keep installing them. There's also a 24hour cooldown on using them, so there's that to consider as well. Clone jumping should only be used if you must.

I clone jump between high-sec and low-sec. There is a 24 hour cooldown period, but if you plan correctly, that will very rarely ever come in to play.
