I jumped into open beta Friday night. I have a 7 Minstrel; Etude the Wary.

Fun game. The character movement and the little instanced movies made it feel very consolish.

I was checking out LoTRO mostly to see what the buzz was all about and sizing it up as a new-game alternative to Vanguard, as I was worried perhaps I'd invested in the wrong game.

I'm sure my quickly-formulated opinion won't be popular around here but as far as I'm concerned LoTRO doesn't hold a candle to Vanguard in nearly any way except for the fact that perhaps it's less buggy (though I had a couple glitches with instances while playing LoTRO). The combat, the crafting, the mechanics, and especially the graphics are highly simplified in LoTR as compard to Vg.

For now I'll be sticking with Vanguard and EQ. Enjoy LoTR Smiley: smile.

I haven't had any glitchy graphic issues even with my underpowered system.

I can't speak for any VG/LoTRO comparisons since my (again, unpowered) system can't play VG anyway so I haven't tried it. I'm personally having fun so that's what's good for me Smiley: smile

People do seem to be having alot of fun with the game, which is why I wanted to make sure to try it. I had fun with it.

The one noticable, or at least memorable glitch, was in the newb area. There were gobs of people since open beta had just started, and all trying to do the final newb instanced quest you get in the Hunter's Lodge. Everyone in the area went into suspended animation for 10-15 secs. So, it was a game thing and not a puter thing, and not a big deal and totally understandable for the circumstances, and also doesn't weigh into my opinion of the game in the least.

I did like the minstrel, she seemed a bit over-powered compared to others I was playing alongside. The movies were fun.

The characters all run like dorks.Smiley: grin

Vanguard, while, in my opinion is a awesome game and getting better every day, is not drawing in the crowds. Population on most servers seems pretty low. Smiley: frown

Only glitch so far that I have noticed has been a few times in the cutscenes when the sound cut in and out and my system is very qualified to run this game.

That'd pretty much it in my opinion.

The days of MMORPG elitist should have ended by now. Maybe it "made sense" when it was Everquest as the 800lb gorilla and upcoming Dark age of Camelot or something. But with so many games out now, it's as silly as saying that the Toyota Camry is the one true make/model of car and all the rest are flawed pieces of suck. Find a game you like and which suits your style of play and play the damned thing already.

And be happy that LoTRO gave you a chance to try it out for free so you could decide that it wasn't a match for you.

I had a script error the other day... no clue what caused it so I didn't bother reporting it. Popped up in my event log as "ERROR: <script x=".

Otherwise the game is pretty fun so far. I'm still having trouble in terms of suspending my disbelief, for example:

1. I created a Hobbit Guardian; then
2. Take on quest to kill wolves. Okay, this makes sense, hobbits are farmers/shepherds and they need to protect their sheep; and
3. Take on quest to kill pigs. Okey, this too makes sense, hobbits need to eat like everyone else, right?; and
4. collect berries, find old satchels, etc etc... all standard MMO quests and all believable; but then...
5. Complete instance by defeating defeat Éogan after the burning of Archet. Um... A hobbit... taking on a man... and not just any man but the leader of the bandits??? Some how that just seems very un-hobbit-like.
(6. Oh yeah, and hobbits swimming? I thought hobbits hated the water?)

Well I'm still willing to give the game a chance, but I think I'll create a dwarf instead. Hobbits just never struck me as being very violent so these quests seem to deviate a little from Tolkien's vision.

There was not a choice to make a female Dwarf??

Is this just for beta? There will be female dwarfs available when the game goes live, yes?

You notice they don't call them male or female, just dwarfs. I think the official stand is they're bieng as vague as Tolkein about dwarfs and sex. So your dwarf is female if you say it is.

They do have beards, and all...

The creation screen says that female dwarves are identical in appearance to male dwarves to outside races.

I stopped running hobbit quests in Staddle with my human captain. After running back and forth fifteen times to help two elderly hobbits fall in love, I started a new quest which was to go check up on Hobbit B. Then Hobbit B tells me to go tell Hobbit A to ***** off. At which point I thought "Ok, thanks but rather than using my battle-trained self to deliver hate mail, I have orcs to kill and stuff. I'd tell you to go send her a letter but it's a farther walk to the goddamned mailbox than it is to her door you lazy little freak!!".

Then I went off to kill orcs. I have my Bree-land quests task bar completed anyway.

lmao! Yeah, that's why we all play Fantasy MMORPG right? To help separate the local orc population's heads from their bodies. I still don't see a hobbit doing it though. Maybe that's why the hobbit quests are more passive I guess.

I don't know, I kind of enjoyed this one. Gave me a chuckle. A nice change from the usual "go and kill x number of y" quests.

And it gives a decent reward at the end of the quest chain.
