Salient comments from a 10 year old.Follow

Just wanted to say hi to everyone here, been 'lurking' around Allakhazam for a while.

My wife and daughter and I all play WoW together and have a lot of fun with it. But to be honest, we've never gotten into all the 'epic' gear, best of the best, etc. Guess we're not 'competitive' enough.

I signed up for the LOTRO open beta and was checking it out a couple days ago when my daughter (almost 10), asked "What's that?", then "Can I try?". So she's been playing for the last couple days.

One of the most interesting comments she's made about LOTRO is that "the stories make sense" - She's a very avid reader and loves historical fiction and fantasy.

Game mechanics and graphics aside - because really, those don't make a lot of difference to a 10 year old - she enjoys the questing and interactions with the game because it is logical and makes sense in a true 'Story telling' way.

I think Turbine has done an excellent job of trying to present a new approach to the 'story' behind an MMO, given the restrictions of trying to stay within a set storyline, and remain interesting to the larger market.

I'm still looking for the perfect MMO game for me, but this by far is the closest I've seen, and I'm looking forward to see where it goes.

The one thing I like about this game is the "Epic" feel to it. I'm playing a minstrel, and I have not had this much fun questing in quite some time. I actually take time to read the quests. I hope this keeps up for the higher level content in the game as well.

Well if all you played is WoW then I can see how you would think that. LotRO just takes a much different approach then WoW and some other MMOs, partially just by having a story-line that flows through the whole game. WoW's story is there but is hidden in all the quests and such, and there is no "direct" story like in LotRO.

IMO, no MMO has beaten FFXI in story-telling... but then again, Square Enix KNOWS how to tell a story. FFXI actually had (last I checked) SIX story lines in it, all told mainly through cutscenes. The problem with FFXI and their story lines is the fact that a lot of the fights in the missions/story were fairly hard and needed certain things/jobs. Also it was hard to reach the level cap, since you couldn't solo. I understand that soloing has been made a bit more viable now, but I haven't personally tried it since i've long since canceled my subscription to FFXI.

only a few jobs can solo effectively even now. I'm close to quitting. another day or two of lotro and i'll probably be killing my content id.

I have to disagree. Every class I have tried since last November has been able to solo well as far as I took the toon (usually somewhere between lvl 20 and lvl 30).

Although I don't know you, this kind of blanket critique smacks of "the poor workman always blames his tools" to my ears. In any case, good luck in whatever game you prefer.

I think LoTR come close to it or maybe even pass it, Even the go fetch and delivery quest i have down has a reasonable story behind it, I really enjoying the sights and story of the game.

Actually, there's more than that. There are:

Original national storylines. I've only ever played Bastok myself, but I'm assuming the San d'Oria and Windurst start out and end differently (they all converge at Rank 5 with the Shadowlord, but then diverge again after that).

Each expansion pack (Rise of Zilart, Chains of Promethia and now Treasures of Aht Urghan) has its own story line.

That potentially makes your 6 potential story lines just for the missions.

There's also now the storyline associated with your NPC Adventuring Fellow

Then each job has a story line to go with it. I can't remember the exact number of jobs there are now (and I'm too tired / lazy to hop over to the FFXI boards and count :) ), but all of the jobs have Artifact Armour quest stories which last for several quests, and all of the advanced jobs have detailed stories in their unlock quests.

These go far beyond the kind of stories / descriptions you get in regular one-off NPC quests (which I wouldn't count for any game), and ups the number of possible "involved" story lines to around 70 :)

And these are just the ones I know of. There are certainly "extended" quest lines (like the Star Onion Brigade) which have longer than average plots to them.

You're definately right on that... SE knows how to write a good, compelling story.

It was actually when I watched the cutscenes for my artifact armour that I started to feel a real honour in playing a Dragoon (I already loved it, but the stories made me feel like there was something special about it within the context of the story, too :) ).

Good point, I had forgotten about the jobs and their AF quests... I was thinking just about the main story, but there really are a lot more. I was only thinking about the main story because I don't know how involved some other things will be in LotRO.

Oh, and it's either 18 or 21 jobs in FFXI >_> Only reason I know (well think I know) is I remember talk about filling an alliance with 1 of every job and having exactly the right number to fill it. Well, talk along those lines heh. I just can't remember if that was pre or post ToAU.
