Recent Connection Problems?Follow

I'm waiting for upgrades for my comp so I have not been able to play LOTRO beta yet and probably wont be ready to untill a day or two before the offical launch on April 24th. However I'm really excited to play because I really enjoy LOTR and MMORPG's. I talked the game up to a friend of mine from WOW who just downloaded the Beta and after getting to level three he stopped playing due to bad lag and long load times. I'm a little bummed cuz his computer is pretty up to date and im hoping that because its the beta it might be pushing the envelope a little. Anyways im still preordering the game but can someone tell me is my buddy's experience normal or does it sound abnormal?

Well, it could be related to any number of things... But, if he set his video settings too high and/or had lots of things going on in the background he very well could have been lagging and had long load times. His connection could also be to blame. It's really hard to say any more then that w/o knowing some more info like his PC specs, did he turn everything up to max, is it server or client lag?

I know I personally play with basically zero lag, server and client, unless there is something major going on in the background of my PC like if i'm running a torrent or my AV is doing something.

I have some lag issues. Usually but repeatably when entering a new area, for maybe 30s , then it stabilises. I put it down to maybe a crappy video card (FX7300) though turning the settings down makes no noticeable difference.
After this time period the game runs smooth again.

I have 1Gb system memory and an oldish P4 3.2 GHz machine, but its not connection lag for sure as I am on 10Mb (and get a solid 6Mb from US to UK).

Don't let it put you off though, in general gameplay it isn't really an issue.

I have a lower end Puter and i run the game on medium with hardly any lag. But that was after I upgraded my drivers for my video card and also upgraded Microsoft netframe. Your friend might need to do both those things or lower the setting from the highest to just high since there seem to be a bug with the highest settings.

Thanks for the information guys and i cant imagine not buying the game "NO that is not going to happen!" just because of a little lag anyway. My buddy likes LOTR's but has never read the books so i can see how he might not get into the game. As for his computer specs I know he has a fast 3.8 duel core processor and his graphics card has 512 Ram on it and it with 2 Gigs of Ram to boot..I'm finding out about his settings and his connection now. I'm hoping he had all his settings maxed out and by lowering them it helps him out. I can imagine him not trying that cuz he's confident his comp can handle anything. Seriously though thanks for the info :)

Unless he's running about 4k worth of hardware that just aint going to happen >_> Even then, depending on the way some things are set-up in the game it may not happen period. I know of some games that you just CAN'T turn everything up to max, the hardware just can't support the mile long draw distance and stuff... even with 4k of hardware. It's a little harder to fiddle around with the LotRO settings because there are almost no sliders, and for the key settings that will effect performance greatly they are just pre-defined settings. Personally, i'm happy with the way the game looks, and outside of first running into 50+ PCs I get no lag... and even then, I can run into 50+ PCs w/o any if I don't have something running in the background.

Level 3? that's like, 10 minutes into the game. your friend sucks and also may be retarded. you might want to look into that.

Normally i would not respond to something like that but because it IS a friend of mine I have to respond with this quick thought. You cant assume that just because you can get to level three in ten minutes means that everyone will, you could assume that i suppose but you would be wrong. Everybody does not look at an RPG as a "destination" game some of us look at it as a "journey" game. I for one prefer to expand my characters depth while I level and i make it a point to read all the dialog and lore that i can. Not to mention spending time building social ties and helping out people who are lower level than me. And while my friend may be retarded in someones opinion he certinly does not Suck.

Just wondering too when you say crashes do you mean the game crashes and your back to your desktop or do you mean the computer crashes and you have to turn it back on(I'm not totally computer savvy sorry if its a dumb question)?

Anyways no hard feelings i hope i just had to speak my mind
Peace,Love and Light :)

if it helps heres my rig:

-nvidia 4000 video card (those are like 512 or something)
-766 Ram (trust me the math is right, 512+256 = 768 - 2 because the 2 will always be used by the onboard card)
-60gb hd...with 10gb of freespace..and im working on that by backing up music and videos and deleting them plus an impending reformat of my system once the game is actually released and i can just use the disc (which i could do with the beta disc but hey, im lazy)

with all that being said...my comp actually handles the game fairly well, yes i have all the settings turned down, because i dont need to see the flowers and leaves in high definition and all that jazz...i still have problems in high traffic areas (groups of people around 30 or more) but that stabalizes out too...so you should have no problem running this game with an 'average' computer at best...if your buddies monster rig cant handle this game...hes doing something wrong

I'm at a loss to explain it ... because i cant be right there and see what it is he has, I have to rely on word of mouth. If everything he's telling me checks out though it would have to be a connection issue however he claims to play WOW with no lag at all. :) I'm starting to think that he just does not want me to buy it so i dont stop playing WOW :) Thanks for your help though everyone I'll see you all in Middle Earth as soon as my new comp gets here. The computer elves are slow getting my parcel delivered...but i will be patient and all will unfold as it should. Later.

Well, it could also be he doesn't really understand the difference from PC and Server lag... and even if he does, there can be any number of things that cause the server lag, from their end to his connection.

Edit: that or he is lieing.
