Comparing SWG today to preCU, I'd say get away from SOE while you can, but SWG's improved a hell of a lot since the travesty at November 5th so yeah do come back, Creature Handler and Bio-Engineer's more or less back (but to hip it up for the demographics, its borrowed from KOTOR II and now called BEASTMASTER!! EXTREME MTV1!1!!111), SOE's also bringing a patch not only to free up some housing space but also for the heck of cultural genocide, yippy.
As for the community on Bria, well there's ST-G which is more or less a stormtrooper guild, there's MCo which is the equivalent of the rebel alienating GRD and there's JEDL, a poorly spelt Jedi guild which quite frankly sucks. I suggest trying out all the galaxies and see which one you'd prefer to come back to. Welcome back mate.

if you played just a year ago that would mean you played after nge hit. in that case you should see any changes that have happned as a good thing. all the expertises is done for the diffrent classes. chapter six adds creatures or brings them back depending on when you played. i've noticed a good amount of people playing rpg in game, creating guilds and such for that theme. not my cup of tea but i could see why they would want to. chapter seven is susposed to revamp the imp theme park so that should be good. chapter six does the rebels. the housing purge will be the hot thing this chapter along with creatures. if you have a house and don't want to loose anything i would sugest just to come back and save that if nothing else.

Dear Rpgplayaforlife,

I played SWG when it first came out, way back when. I took a long time off because I was unhappy about 2 things. First, I felt it was very difficult to make friends, and did alot of soloing (which was fun, because the old system allowed for alot of character depth), but other than the occasion group invite I was a loner. Second, I was dissapointed at how difficult they had made it to be a Jedi. I went to WoW, and played there for some time before getting fed up with the "special yellow bus, and head gear" style of crafting.
Alas, I heard Jedi was now a choice in SWG as profession so I returned.
While alot of things that I loved about SWG had changed, I felt that the remaining player base was hardcore, and very friendly.
I respecced to Jedi, and went about my merry way soloing as I had before, however I when I got curious about when I'd be able to wield a Sabre, I started asking around and made friends. That was lvl 22, Now at lvl 88, I have good friends, who I have been guilded with since lvl 22. we have watched each other grow as players and now control our guild from council positions.
We have great fun, and while some like to roleplay more than others, I believe the players who stuck with SWG are happy with most of the changes, frustrated by some, but overall eager to login everyday.

We are on Shadowfire Server, and I would welcome you back.
We have alot of Guild Wars that go on, and it keeps things fresh and fun.
I am not one of those Relic Banging recruiters, just looking to help you out, and welcome you back if you chose to come to Shadowfire.

Sincerely,

Hmm, I suppose it depends on what you like... if you didn't like WoW, then I wouldn't recoment LOTRO, as they are fairly Similar.

If you DID like the Crafting aspect of SWG, then you may like Vanguard, but only if you go into it knowing that it won't really be 'complete' (Read it should still be in a Beta test stage,) for a few more months, and only if you have a top of the line computer / Graphics Card.

If you kinda liked WoW but wanted more realistic (Less Cartoony) Grafix, then LOTRO may suit you. It's heavy on Quest Grinding, so if you like doing Quests with story's you may like it.

The good thing with LOTRO is that for 4 more days it's in it's open beta stage, that should give you enough time to test it out n see if you like it for yourself.

But honestly, I Have played them all, when they first come out. (some extensively... ) but I keep on coming back to SWG.

Sure SOE pulled the ole 'Switcheroo' on us when they Made a new game and foisted it upon the subscribers of SWG and called it NGE heh, but a year down the road, and there really is quite a bit of fun to be had... and so far, I havn't found any of the other games with NEARLY as much Depth as you'll find in SWG.

Anyway, good luck to you in your quest. I hope this helps a bit.

I can tell you that like my fellow posters, I have played the full gamut of MMORPG's and found them lacking. SWG is the only one that hasn't gotten old.
I think(as silly as it may sound) That certain interactions in the world keep me wanting to log in.
Like hearing that storm trooper telling me to "Move along" everytime I exit bestine to go to my house.
I very often have to stop and go PvP, just to end his mumbling.

Its the little things, like walking into my home, and finding some newbie there staring at my collection of lightsbre's spread out across an entire wall, and him saying,
"Wow, where did u get all those?"
And then giving him the tour and explaining how I made em.
Swg is a rich environment that use's a world most of us only dreamed of interacting with as kids in the late 70's early 80's.

But, if you really wanted to try a new MMORPG, I would recommend
"City of Heroes/City of Villains"
The character creation is a ton of fun at the start and playability is strong, plus the player community is pretty friendly.
Also the game itself is not too cartoony, and nothing beats reaching lvl 14, and choosong your very own "super" mode of travel power...(Flying around the city like Superman is a blast)

for a good jedi server i wouldn't really sugest valcyn, at least as imps go. on the imp chat a good jedi or commando bashing happens every few days. probley the two that most imps that is to say dont like. but i'm a jedi and a imp so i dont care.

Well...I will keep it very short. I like it....I have really thrown myself at the game. Asked questions of many of that now have given you advice. I will more than likely never play another MMOG. As a SW fan I truely love the enviroment, as a gamer I love the RPG and PVP parts of it...even though I keep getting smoked in PVP. I Highly recommend it as an old gammer...even though this game time has been short.

With all do respect, I would suggest Shadowfire Server.
There are a few Jedi guilds...
The one I belong to happens to be one of the oldest.
Our group is very tight, and we welcome new members, as well as provide training in all areas(Sabre construction, best materials for sabre's, Special PvP tactics, skill tree growth...etc).
We also love to role-play, but not to the point of tedium.
Our guild has weekly events, such as Dueling tournaments, with rewards for the winners at each lvl, Guild raids on NPC strongholds, and PVP areas.
We also conform to the Padawan, Master relationship.
Each new guild members is given a Master, and must pass trials each time they are to attain a new title.
The trials are different for each Padawan/Master relationship.
I'll admit I was worried about this at first, but our guild has proven to be very inventive in making each test, something that will benefit the Whole guild, teach the Jedi something, and be fun.

I invite you to shadowfire, and to apply for membership into Our guild.

Sincerely,

Go to station.com, sign in using (I believe) the same info You use to sign into the game...Station name..password etc.

And from there, there should be some simply options for character transfer.

It was a while ago, when I "contemplated" brining one of my alts to the Shadowfire server, but the price tag was high.
I think its more than 60$ american to bring the toon over with equiptment, if not more..and not too much cheaper to bring them over without anything.

So eaither way your spending a Load of money..

Good luck with your decision, and if you do decide to transfer, I hope to see you soon on Shadowfire...lol

Just look up the bald jedi, same name as here..

there are several factors you should consider before rejoining swg, and, my own advice is try one of the free trial offers before resubscribing in any case.

1. empty servers, there are very few servers that have anything approaching a viable population, and those are ahazi, bria, and probably chimaera. so unless you have a bunch of friends on other servers that you know will be around, your options are fairly limited.

2. immature behaviour. i dont think i need to explain that, but since the nge was released, the behavour of the remaining players has also declined, thats not to say that there arent still some decent players remaining, its just that your more likely to encounter tards and l33ters now than before.

3. limited options, professions are pretty much in a rut, with few, if any, avenues in which to be 'original' contrary to a previous post, creature handler has not made a reappearance, and its not planned to be re'introduced, there is a beastmaster expertise option that may, or may not be introduced into the game, but anyone thinking this will in any way resemble creature handler clearly hasnt read up on the subject.

4. limited game content, even the legacy quest is still unfinished, there is also a severe lack of other game content to replace the things they took away with the NGE, in all aspects that are relevant, swg can still be considered to be a work in progress, ie, it is a game that has reverted to beta.

my own personal advice is this, dont subscribe to swg unless you are absolutely sure you are happy with the game as it stands. swg is also part of the station access games selection, along with Vanguard, planetside and both everquests etc. as for players, you have to play LOTRO or WOW, to realise just how empty SWG is in terms of other players.

I think that anyone experienced with multiple MMORPG's would know that every game has its drawbacks, and childish elements.
No matter what server or game you go to your gunna have to contend with kids being kids...Miserable pastey complexioned adults being miserable, and so on, and so forth.
If your worried about all that then why even bother with an MMORPG..just hook up the old atari, or coleco-vision...lol.
SWG has one important thing going for it that no other MMORPG has.......its "STAR WARS".
True, hard core gamers have had to deal with alot of ups and downs with SWG, but we all keep logging on.
Why then if things are so bad do peeps keep paying monthly??

Another truth...Its alot of fun. Nothing compares to watching a bounty hunter sneak up on a loud mouth player and collect their bounty....
Watching the Bounty hunter stand their for a moment to get their screen shot and taunt is loads of laughs, and even funnier to watch their name blink red(meaning they are attackable) and then getting your own screenshot after silencing them with Jedi Justice...lol.
Making friends and enemies, adds a real element to the game.
As a player who's main is a Jedi, I have had alot of complaints, and heard alot of complaints.
Its all just hot air, So far the only friends I've seen leave SWG since they changed the game around were ones who had money problems..or Family matters to attend to(And most of them came back after taking care of things).
Shadowfire is a good server no matter which direction you take your toon in, with loads of Jedi, Bounty Hunter, Trader guilds, and mixed guilds. Mos eisley cantina is almost always hopping, even in the wee hours of the morning there are usually peeps grinding an entertainer, and B.S'ing.
I think playing the game on a trial basis is a safe idea...If the trial doesn't limit you...the way other game trials do(such as limited planets, equiptment, or lvls).

On the other hand, If you played before, I'm telling you as a player from pre-Nge, and Pre-cu...The game is still worth more than 20 hours of my time each week.
And I'm a busy guy, I'm a professional artist, and family man, But I make the time...I HAVE FUN.

last i heard wow was at over 8 million, but i won't disagree that you get the same kinds of people there, you get them in all games, the difference is that in SWG because there are so few players, they tend to stand out more.
at the moment im trying LOTRO, and, yes, their there too. :(
i keep coming back to swg and hoping that the game will finally take that huge leap forward to being playable again, so far, the game keeps letting me down, maybe my standards are too high, but then, i was there when it all started.

I was also there when it all started as well. I left because at the time, the game was packed and I still found it difficult to make friends. I had no trouble grouping with peeps, just the friend making.
After trying my hand at several other MMORPG's and enjoying them I returned to SWG, and as a Jedi, made tons of friends(again I believe in large part to the players left being true die-hard loyalists, or new gamers who had no concept of the game pre-cu, or pre-nge).

As for Empty servers, I'll say again, Shadowfire Server is well populated and well rounded.
Without meaning to offend I don't understand how anyone who has not been playing SWG recently could comment on the state of affairs.

It would be like someone from 1200 A.D. telling us via a time machine that the "New World" was "STILL" Unpopulated, and Savage...
"Step out of the time machine sir, grab a newspaper, and look around"...lol.
"These are called skyscrapers, people live and work in them"..lol
"This is called a television, and no..Little people don't live in it"...lol

I Personally invite any former SWG gamers to please return, Come to Shadowfire, and see how robust and alive it is.
As a static environment things change, for better and worse...like a parody of real life, only with laser carbines, galactic despots, Light and Dark Jedi...and the occasional bug..lol.

Well, I'm glad to help.
I guess you must have respecced a bunch of times in the past in order for your respec to be so much. Even still, when you log in you might get a free respec.

I don't want to make any promises, but I can tell you that our guild does try to help those that are looking to respec to jedi and join our guild(of course we'd look to become friends first and be sure of a certain level of loyalty to the guild before we shelled out 25 mill). We know that it can be expensive, and good veterans are not a dime a dozen.

As for not choosing Jedi, I would still reccomend shadowfire. Lots of Commando's and BH's running around, and alot of action.

Enjoy, and your welcome to contact me if you choose Shadowfire, even if you don't go Jedi, we welcome grouping with other professions for PvP, or high lvl questing..

my subscription ran out 3 days ago, i really do know what the state of the game is, that im not happy with it, is the reason why my subscription ran out 3 days ago. as for making friends, thats not something i've ever had a problem with, i dont know if you've tried the mmo test thing at guild cafe, but its insightful about the person themselves too, on my own test i was rated SEAK, (Social Exploration Achiever Killer) i dont remember the exact percentages, but even with the game in its current state, i still managed to make several new friends, i was originally a tarquinas player, but, as that server slid down the slippery slope of unpopulation, i became a bria player, which is one of the most populated - it achieves a medium population sometimes :D as for shadowfire being well populated and well rounded, as its not in the lists as being a medium population at least, i can only guess at your own personal views on what passes for an acceptable level of player interraction. my own main chars are either entertainers or crafters, so i tend to stick to places like mos eisley, not that i havent visited other places too, its just that mos eisley is where people tend to be. and while on bria, mos eisley cantina can be a relatively crowded environment, it is by no means as populated as it used to be, nor does it compare with the pre-nge levels of population all that favourably. i would be interested in how you score on the mmo test, as i have a feeling your something of a loner by nature. as for former swg players coming back to the game and seeing how things have changed etc, they have been, its just that very very few of them ever stay. some, like me, return with the publish releases, and then leave again. there are other, possibly better games out there now, and swg doesnt really compete that well yet, but, with any luck, in some future point it might be a playable game again.

you make some good statements cloud and yea as a returning player i feel i will be not so happy with some of the new aspects of the game. i would have been still playing if it werent for me going to basic triaining (in the army). so then this wouldnt all be nessacary and it wouldnt be a shock for me comming back but i do what is needed to be done. Also i am a imperial and i here valcyn server has so heavy imperial standing's there so i may try there but i may also try shadowfire for i been invited there by some friends but i am undecided as of yet. but i do plan on comming back to the game to see how it has changed but i did enjoy the old days (pre-cu) bein in heavy fighting jedi duels when the match actually lasted long then 15 seconds.. cuase i here with all the new buffs and ability's thats about how long a one on one duel last.. its just sad they didnt keep it how it was instead of destroying what was good about it all.. but non the less i plan on seeing for myself what they have done to it.

Well Cloudancer,

I have no clue what my score is. I don't even have a clue as to what your talking about...lol.
The only time I spend in the cantina is when I'm getting a buff, and once in a while an Imperial will see my Rebel Ace Helmet, and start mouthing off challenges, and insults..SO of course I stick around for that too(Love the Banter).
At least until I decide its time to vaporize them and make their particles one with Space..lol.
"Time to go See Obi-Wan!" I tell them as we head to the starport.
Sometimes I'm right, and sometimes I'm wrong...lol....Dead Wrong..ROFL
Truth, I am not a loner, But I do my best work alone.
I am a member of my Guilds Jedi Council, and have alot of close friends in and out of the Guild.
I spend alot of time, Helping New Players in Space, and On the Ground. (And I don't limit my help to guild members only)
I also Spend alot of Time on My alt crafting Gear to Outfit my guilds Jedi with the best equiptment.

AS for What a screen tells me each server population is like, I couldn't care less.
I don't want to hit certain dungeons, and find 3 groups of players already there.
I don't want to wait 25 minutes just to get a buff, Cuz every entertainer has a line a mile long.
And I certainly don't want, or NEED, some console to tell me what Kind of player I am...lol. My friends do that.

Shadowfire is alive and well, the areas that are supposed to be crowded, Like Mos Eisley, are.

The ones that are supposed to be earily quiet like the plains of Dathomir..Are.

And as for you only leaving SWG 3 days ago, and commenting on the state of affairs...

I am Looking forward to your next report..Perhaps you will comment on "Politics in New Guinea, for the year 2120"...lol

I stand By what I said, Please don't comment on the weather with your head in an Ostrich Hole(LOTR hole)...LMAO..
