Well... what can I say?Follow

Very impressed. That just about sums it up.

I bought LOTRO yesterday and played it for a few hours last night and a few hours today and despite only being a few levels past the beginning section, I know already that the game is very impressive.

What can I say really? The atmosphere is superb- it is LOTR I suppose after all. The graphics and sound is brilliant. The game engine itself seems (so far anyway) to hold its own very well- leveling, questing, traits, skills, crafting etc. is all great. What is more (for me at least) the fact it maintains a lot of similarities to the WoW game engine is good- I always say if something works well, why not use it? It has enough uniqueness to really stand out from the crowd, yet still uses stuff from other MMOs that give it real approachability. After playing LOTRO for about 15 minutes I felt as if I had been playing it for about two years as it is just so easy to get into- and yes that means it is likely that is is easy to get addicted to too! :P

So far anyway, I cannot find any major problems with the game. There are niggles (like seemingly not being able to increase the size of the UI?) but to be honest, what game doesn't have niggles?

Anyway, the main reason of this post is to say: I am pleased I bought it, and if you haven't already, or are unsure as to whether you should, make sure you do as soon as you can- it really is worth it. Let's just hope it has a good future ahead of it :)

If you want to be really impressed, re-read the books and then play the game.

The attention to detail has been very, very satisfying.

The rate I read tho.....
They'll be on the 7th or 8th content update by the time I'm done. >_<

Should I buy the book on tape as read by Samuel L. Jackson, or Christopher Walken?

Yes, aside from being a very good game technically, the attention to detail as a game for LOTR is very good. But that is something they had to do for the game to sell well. With other MMOs there is a certain degree of flexibility whereas in this, as often mentioned in other posts, the game has to be very true to the books, and I am pleased to see it does it extremely well, as best as possible I'd say.

And if you havent read the books make sure you do! I'm sure the audio tapes will be fine, though nothing beats reading it yourself :) It can be more rewarding that way- there is almost a direct between you and the story, something which I think that audio tapes don't seem to provide, for me at least anyway.
