I was thinking about some of the differences from the books to the game, and it occurred to me that I don't remember but one giant spider in the books(Its been years since I read them and I've already confused several things between the books and the movies, so don't hold me to that.)

As I personally dislike spiders quite a bit(almost as much as Kao), I was just wondering if the inclusion in the game of so many huge spiders wasn't taking a few liberties with the lore? Just curious(and bored while LOTRO is updating).

I can only recall 1 in the books myself but its been a few years since I read them. But if they stuck to the lore, there'd be even less stuffs to kill Smiley: tongue

Per Wikipedia:

She occupied Torech Ungol beneath Cirith Ungol, and may have once lived in Beleriand, possibly in the Ered Gorgoroth, although it is not known how she came from thence to Mordor. Also called the "Spider of Darkness", Shelob's brood (upon whom she would often feed) include the giant (but relatively smaller) spiders who capture Bilbo Baggins' Dwarf allies in Mirkwood during the events chronicled in The Hobbit.

I'd guess you're running into Shelob babies throughout Middle Earth.

Besides Shelob, there were the spiders that spun up the dwarfs in the Hobbit.

Supposedly though, Shelob the 'almost hobbit killer' was inspired by a real life spider, who's bite nearly took the life of Tolkeins son.

Harry Potter's got lots of spiders though. Smiley: grin

...I hear there is a Harry Potter MMO in the works.

As I recall, there were also spiders in Mirkwood and Shelob had her brood and the race she came from was mentioned.

If they did it right I could see a HP mmo appealing to people, but it would be very tough to do right. I mean no one wants to sit through classes in an MMO, and that is sort of what hogwarts is for... a place of learning. I doubt you could help out with the major elements from the books either, I have a feeling that any licensing deal would involve not breaking the lore like that. Thats always a problem with trying to adapt a book/movie to a MMO. Single-player game works well, but MMO...

Anyways, to get back more on topic, to expand on what Joph said...

I don't have the books in front of me, but I remember very clearly them saying Shelob's brood was all around middle-earth. She was (is I guess) ancient and got around a lot hehe. So, adding so many isn't really a liberty with the lore, since it's specified her brood is all over and in darker days it isn't a hard stretch that they would start coming out into the open more or something.

Yeah like a few others said, Mirkwood was full of them. And of course there was Shelob. BUT, let's not forget about the mother of all spiders: Ungoliant. Now *that* was a spider! She was actually related to the Ainur (the "angels" of Arda, Tolkien's world.) Of course she fell into evil, thanks to Melkor. As a matter of fact, she was so bad-*** she almost defeated Melkor, and he was the most powerful of all the Ainur. Ungoliant would have eaten the whole Shire and asked where the main course was, hehe.
