If they do implement it I hope they spend a lot of time on coming up with the best possible soloution. They should use swg as an example on how NOT to implement player housing. The way they have housing-zones in daoc is great but would it really work for lotr and middle earth? Personally I think not. The "best" way would be to m design the housing like in swg. BUT the zones are too small for that and even if they weren't, I believe, it would be hard to implement and still be true to the lotr-world. And what I love the most about this game is that they seem to put tolkiens lotr first and then they create their game around that. In opposite to swg where they created a ****** game in a start-wars costume with no soul. All in all, I hope they don't implement player housing becuase I think it would be hard to implement and still keep the high standard they have right now.

I think Housing is essential to an MMORPG. They already did away with PvP and to never implement housing would do a dis-service to the players. Also houses or halls for your Kinship would be nice.

I remember reading that they were planning to do housing more like DOAC where they would have instanced zones for housing. I haven't heard any specifics, so we'll just have to see.

Housing would be nice but I don't know that it's essential. They had it in SWG and DAoC but when I first started in EQ housing was unheard of. I see housing as yet one more place to pile useless crap I might or might not ever use but can't seem to get rid of cause the minute I do I'll need it. Hell, I don't need housing, I have a wife for that :)

Yeah but I think a lot of people like the idea of going somewhere where they can stay and log out. Or store stuff or have their own personal furnaces, ovens etc.
If perhaps having a house per person is too much then they should definitely have Guild Halls available where members of your Kinship can go and hang out, do stuff etc. Like have their own room or something. I think that would be rad.

Thats what I remember also, they would have instanced streets and such for housing. ETA: Who knows Smiley: lol

I have to disagree some here with this. While there isn't TRUE PvP in the game, you can still play vs other players, they just take control of monsters to fight you. Right now it isn't that big really, because it is limited to one zone level 40+ for freeps to get into, but soon as more people hit cap they'll play on freeps more and creeps can kill them.

What I meant was you cant go and kill people. Like PvP from other games. I personally have no problem with True PvP being left out of the game. I think the reasons for it not being present are justified. But houses shouldn't be in instanced areas. That means only you and your fellowship will be able to see them which is pointless. People like showing off their houses, and I personally like the idea of running through a forest and coming across someones cottage.

But enough about individual houses. What about Kinship Halls, or Guild Halls for your Kinship to use as like a base of operations? That way you save space and give most people a place to call their own.

seriously though other then for extra storage this game has no need for player housing, and ill be slapped, but we dont even have a need for kinship halls.

yes i agree they are nice features but it's just not necessarry. and since it does sound like they are implementing housing i do hope its ONE house thats a private instance for the individual.

*edit* i just wanted to add...i dont even clean my own house, like i want to work on keeping a virtual house clean

lol you must be the only person who doesn't want housing. Role-Playing is all about being an individual. I've been doing a lot of googling and and have found lots of stuff about how they are going to be focussing a lot on Role-Playing aspects of MMOs, like social clothing, housing, events etc. Should be sweet.

If i wanted to have a house, I'd be playin 2nd life or some such.

When I first started in EQ, I (mis)read somewhere that you needed to choose a safe camp spot, and assumed it meant that even tho I wasn't logged in, my ranger was still 'in-world' and could be attacked. So I would always run back from wherever I was to Qeynos and log out in the same room in an inn. It became 'my room'.

One day after hunting in BlackBurrow I ran back to qeynos and I was a bit miffed to find a couple of other toons hanging out in 'my' room. I felt violated somehow. And from then on, I used to camp in the wilds.....well when I say the wilds, I mean the guard tower by the entrance to WK. The guards said they'd keep an eye out ......

First off, I don't think the housing streets will be PRIVATE instances, they'll just a zone you have to zone into through a loading screen. Secondly, they'll probably have an option to allow others to go into your own personal house if you so deem it or something. They'll probably also do something like what EQ2 did and have multiple types of houses, and you click on a door to enter it... but you don't exclusively own that house, each house is just an instance and others can "share" the same house. Now those are just guesses, but it makes sense from multiple standpoints. Like Dyadem said, where else are you going to have million houses? You can't just start making Bree and the Shire and such into metropolitan areas packed full of houses... so having a street with a few houses (getting bigger and more expensive) "shared" by people makes a lot of sense.

I'm not excited about housing but I'm not against it either. I'd have to find out what the benefits to owning real estate are beyond it just being a gold sink for the sake of the economy.

Here's how housing works in DOAC:

It was a nice system when I played the game. There were dedicated zones for housing that anyone could access. Basically, you buy a lot, and then build a house on it. There were several sizes of houses. You paid rent on the houses to keep them. There were several options for customizing and decorating them. There were also several options for granting access.

Personally, I prefer a system like this rather than the urban blight you get with totally open housing systems like UO or SWG.

pre-cu SWG was the best MMO ever made. The housing was awesome as before the CU there were little (if any) ghost towns.

The game had a soul.

Although, after the NGE you are right the housing sucked bc everyone left and you had to wade through a sea of abandoned houses everywhere you went.

Although the LOTRO world is too small for this implementation, SWG had the best housing system in an MMO.

Now if they could implement a housing zone with SWG style housing, I wouldn't have an issue with it. Or a housing system where you could run a vendor but you had to zone into a specific housing instance. That would keep the lag in city areas at a low roar and still allow the "leet crowd" to show off how cool theya re by having a big house to all their friends.

But I still don't feel there is really a need for a housing area really. Sure it would be neat to have but I don't feel it's all that "essential". EQ1 didn't have housing, neither does WoW. Hell, my character doesn't sleep, I can get rested xp anywhere I like, I have a map to a safe spot, a gate to another spot, what the hell do I need a house for? My horse sits in my inventory, if I need to craft I go to a city area to do it, if I need to sell something, I go to a city area.

They could add houses as a way to get more storage space. Or also do what FFXI did which allowed you to have certain beds in your house to lower the % of exp lost on death. They could do that here with repair costs or dread duration.

Think that housing is a great idea!!

Place where you can rest or map back to, would be good if you could buy your own crafting stations and/or vendors to put in your house along with house pets / protectors

I remember playing SWG way back before the game was wrecked by CU and agree with others that it was the best MMO ever made, a time when you had player cities bustling with traders, guild halls, trainers etc….
Different cities had different people specializing in different things so you got to know a lot more people creating a better community, searching out the best armor and weapons in one town then going to another for Buffs and food…(the good old days) but that’s in the past as SOE managed to destroy a once excellent game.

LOTRO could do a lot worse than looking at the SWG (Pre-CU) setup designing small/medium/large houses styled differently depending on the location you wanted to put them, Guild houses where guilds can meet and leave items for each other, Town halls with vendors and trainers, Stables where depending on the size of your town depends on where the horses will take you. Taverns where you can get food/drink and smoke pipe-weed with music
This could also bring a whole new dimension to the game and create a better community and possibly new vocations such as mayor, publican, builder, traders etc…. and could also extend current vocations to letting appropriate trades build crafting station, furniture, pets etc….. Think this would also give an interesting aspect to the game economy where looted items once discarded become valuable and more people are coveting different items.

Heh, not sure how that would jibe with the lore...Yes, welcome to my house. Over there is my work-shop and this guy here is my indentured vendor, Lars. No need to go to that pesky market anymore to pick up suplies. All Middle Earth homes will soon have one these days...

I'm late to the thread but what the heck. I'm pretty indifferent to housing. If it is implemented I might make use of it if it's done FFXI or EQ2 style, instanced and all that with options for decorating but I won't jump for joy. As long as it isn't something you can plop down any where you please.
