Someone on the official Meneldor forum linked to this column from Wired talking about voice chat. Personally, I hate voice chat. It ruins the immersion for me, makes me choose between listening to game sounds/MP3s/etc or hearing the group (as opposed to reading the text box which I'm doing anyway) and I just don't get excited about listening to some random dude bark orders regarding killing an auroch as if he was leading an infantry charge at the Battle of Cantigny.

But, generally when I say I dislike it, people disagree and say how great it is. Different strokes and all that.
How do you feel about voice chat?
It's great. I won't game without it:1 (3.4%)
It's good but I'm fine with text:17 (58.6%)
I dislike it but, if everyone else is, I'll go along:3 (10.3%)
Hate it. I'd rather lie about not owning speakers than use it:8 (27.6%)
Total:29

I think it can be a handy tool for tough encounters. Makes it easier when the leader can quickly assign targets and orders on the fly. I am not a big fan of using it for just chit-chatting though, and I usually turn it on and say I don't have a mic. It is a little annoying in some of the instances, where I want to hear the background noise and music and I can't because I gotta listen to voice chat. But, I guess I fall into the its good, but im fine with tex category.

I just don't care for voice chat. I know that it can sometimes make communication faster, but it just detracts from the game for me.

Besides, cyborz is meant to be text only, otherwise its just phone sexSmiley: grin

Personaly, if I'm in a pick up group, I tend to ignore it.

But if I'm palling around with my kinship buddies, we all joke around on there. I love it. =D

Granted, I also have a vent server that we all use, but still.

I used voice chat (ventrilo and team-speak) throughout 2+ years in EQ2 and loved it. For me, it wasn't about the group or raid dynamic (although it did tend to make tough groups and especially raids run smoother) It was more about the community of hanging with my guildies in a common room.

More often than not, the best times I've had in voice chat have been when I was crafting or harvesting or grinding out some other solo based session and hanging out in voice chat conversing with the other people in the guild. Some of the talk was game related but there was also always ample opportunity for discussion on a wide range of real life topics. I miss that social interaction a lot.

I understand the segment of players who feel that it ruins their sense of immersion but I feel that the benefit gained from getting to know the other players as people instead of just as their toons outweighs this.

I use vent for some stuff still in FFXI but have avoided it like the plague in this game with pugs. I always lie when joining those groups that want to use it and say I don't have a mic to use (really only a white lie since its tied up in vent Smiley: tongue ) Mostly I use it to talk to some of my friends who still play FFXI while I'm playing LOTR since I haven't gotten them all to switch games yet. There are some times its a great help, but mostly you can do with just the text on screen.

To me it makes sense to use voice. The keyboard is used to both control your character and communicate with a raid. There's too many situations where you need to do both simultaneously, or in a quick fashion. Talking while controlling your character seems to solve that problem.

And to the person who says they tell their PUG that he can't do voice because he doesn't have a mic: what do you say when they ask you to turn it on so you can hear? You don't need a mic for to listen to voice chat, hehe.

I guess seven-odd years of typing things while twisting songs as a bard in EQ paid off. My keyboard dexterity is superb!

Well, I can't type without staring at my keyboard, so the moments when I need to fight and warn my group about an incoming add or something, voice chat comes in handy.

I hate voice chat.

I tend to use it more for PvP and think it is less important for PvE.

In all honesty, i have never used voice chat in any game.

Based on my own preferences i agree with jophiel in that it takes away from the role playing of the game. but i also think this can happen in texting when some people go over board with the slang and different dialects.

I can see where it can come in handy in a fellowship when taking care of large quests or missions where texting can become comer sum.

Now once i have made a lot of friends in the game then yes the voice chat i think would be a real blast.

I tend to game exclusively with 3 other friends that I've known in RL for many years. We all live in different parts of the country, so we use voice chat all the time, but more as a way to socialize. Although there are advantages for gaming as well. We use Skype since there are only a few of us.

I'm not sure if I'd be using it for PUG's though. I'm thinking that would be real irritating.

I tell them I hate voice chat, and I refuse to turn it on...and if they feel that strongly then I'll gladly leave the group.

I play mostly at night and have to have the sound very low so I can barely hear the game anyway...if I turn on the voice half the people dont even talk loud enough, the other half talk less then stevie from malcom in the middle. So much for a communication tool.

I would totally use it to cyb0rz though.

I don't particularly care for built in VOIP systems in games as they tend to be subpar from my experiences, that said; I will use Vent if it is available and IMO needed. By needed I mean raid situations, a PUG in the Barrows does not qualify as needed.

I've been in raid guilds in both EQ and WoW where it was required for raiding but they would not push you to use it just for BS'ing around. It has nothing to do with immersion but more to do with I don't feel like jabbering that much when I'm playing. I do have access to a vent server from a friend and if an old RL friend I haven't talked to in a while is on I will chat with them on it but for everyone else text is what they get.

I used vent in wow and teamspeak in EQ but frankly, I really can't stand them. If my guild needs me to use them for a raid or an instance to make things easier I will, although I don't have a mic currently and don't have any intention of getting one soon. Otherwise, if some pug expects me to use this as a pre-req to an invite, I will move on. I don't like pugs anyways and this elitist attitude that you have to use voice chat to be of any use is really stupid imo.

Now if I develop a good friendship in game with someone, I may be inclined to use it to bs with them when I am not hunting/mining/questing but that's it. For me, I type relatively fast and I am quite comfortable doing many things at once without needing to use a mic to tell someone inc. I can engage, draw aggro and type at the same time so why do I need a chat program to do that? If I say inc and you aren't paying attention cause you are on voice chat and don't see my inc message, I don't know that I really want to group with you anyways tbh.

It's alright, I'd rather listen to the great music and read the text though.
