Inspiron E1705

Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T7200 (2.00GHz, 4MB L2 Cache, 667 MHz FSB)

2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz

256MB ATI MOBILITY™ RADEON® X1400 HyperMemory

Size: 120GB SATA Hard Drive (5400RPM)

Windows Vistaâ„¢ Premium

Once the payment is processed it will be shipped July 1st.

Is there anything I should upgrade later when I get it, or is it fine like it is?

(Edit)- When I ordered the laptop, it said it comes with a "FREE Upgrade to Genuine Windows Vistaâ„¢ Home Premium with 1GB of memory". Does that mean I dont have to install Vista?

You should be able to run ok, the only thing I worry about some is the video card. Most laptop video cards share system memory, and the card in general is an older model. You have 2gig memory at least though, so it shouldn't effect you that much. But, you are getting vista with that and vista takes a fair chunk of ram also. Those two factors will hurt your performance, especially on laptops.

The rest of the system looks good though... decent HD and good CPU. The core 2 duo is (imo) a great laptop CPU because of cool it runs, so hopefully you wont have to worry about heat build-up and burning yourself when playing.

Oh, make sure when you install the game and such you make sure you run it under admin rights or something. I remember posts about having problems installing on vista before, and the problem was something about user rights or something.

Thanks for the advice Tomec.

You may need to look into a pcmcia card as well. While sharing onboard memory can impact gaming performance, it should still be workable for you. You may not be able to run the game at max settings but I find that even at medium, the graphics are simply amazing. Bear in mind that a PCMCIA card is an alternative option, although it is not always cost effective.

I have a similar laptop, the only big differences being that my video card is slightly better and I am running XP. I am able to run the game fine on low-medium graphics settings. When I crank them up any higher than medium I run into some framerate issues. If you don't mind having your graphics set to less than ultra-high then you will be fine.

ya as long as the graphics are normal i will be fine

When i played WoW I had the Mac OSX that have 712 ram and the worst graphics card ever, So i am used to very low graphics, medium for me is a big step up.

and another thing...

When i placed the order for the laptop it said "FREE Upgrade to Genuine Windows Vistaâ„¢ Home Premium with 1GB of memory"

Does that mean I have a choice to install Vista or not?

Gonna get flamed for this....... but who cares. If you have the option between XP and Vista, go with XP. Vista is still alittle flaky on stuff like graphic drivers (getting better but still needs some work) and is much more memory intensive to just run itself from XP. I'd go with atleast 3 gig if you wanna run Vista, even more so since it looks like your GPU memory is shared with your mainboard memory.

thats probly what ill do

Is there a way to uninstall Vista if its already on the computer, and put XP on it?

If you have a copy of XP just format/install Smiley: tongue but not 100% sure on that, heard/read too many horror stories of Vista thus far to bother buying it yet. I'm sure someone with more Vista hands on time can help you with that problem though.

As an IT person who supports both, I'd actually agree here to stay with XP, at least for the next year. Vista is a little too rocky for gaming currently to be what I would classify as 100% reliable for mmos. Some people report no issues with it but the ones that do have problems, have them in spades. Of my client base, 4 of them run vista and they account for over 40% of my service calls, everything from admin rights having to be redone to network connections just "stopping" or Vista "forgetting" that it's connected to the internet again after a reboot. That's a ton of support for a supposedly "stable" OS.

So long as it is a full copy and not a restore disc/upgrade disc that will work fine. However, it will remove all the software that the manufacturer puts on there. Normally that is a good thing since they load it up with a lot of junk, but you'll also be losing drivers and any kind of special software they may include like say Microsoft Office or a dvd player.

It will work fine. My wife has the Inspiron 1505 - basically the same computer with a 15" screen instead of the 17" screen. My wife's compter has the same CPU, RAM and graphics card as the one you're getting. I pull it out a few times a week to play LOTRO.

It was a bit laggy at first, but I turned off the post-processing effects and now it runs great at high quality. I also limited the frame rate to 30 and the engine speed to medium. Graphics look very nice and pretty much lag free.

I'd stick with XP if they'll load it on your new laptop instead of Vista.

I agree go with XP, Vista is still in it's "new" phase. I also recommend to get as much RAM as you can.

With most vendors, you have to specifically ask for an XP install and CD on the laptop or you get Vista. All of them are coming with Vista preinstalled afaik.

Well of course they are normally putting vista on them now... I mean vista is the new OS. Never mind it is still buggy and problematic (of course most new OSes are) it's still new so it must go on all new PCs now!
