locations points on a mapFollow

When an item, place, or NPC is given a location such as:

Zone: Angmar
Type: Unknown
Quests: Starting: 2, Involved: 2
Mobs: 1
Location: 4.3N, 30.3W


I know we type( ;loc name) to get the toons current location.

Question: Are the zones gridded like this:

X would be 4N 5W ?? How does it work? Is 4N 5W the same in each zone or is the entire world the whole map??

I'm not sure how it works, but if it does use the grid formula I would guess it'd be more like

The grid pattern uses +/- in the coordinates so the grid pattern you laid out is a little more accurate Tomec. I don't know the exact structure but they are using a NSEW 8 pointed compass with specific locations within each co-ordinate. By this I mean each sector has a specific range of coordinates.

Whatever zone or area you are on 0x0y is the center of it...so yes its a +/- grid like Tomec stated, with North and East representive by +, and South and West by -.

So if the location is 0 north and 0 south we would assume this is somewhere in the center of the zone.

I hope you mean 0 north and 0 east not north and south since you wouldn't ever get those... But yes, you could assume that if something was around 0,0 it'd be near the center of the map. Thats assuming it is based per-map and not something else entirely though and uses the + pattern I was showing.

It is not based per map, it is based world wide.

So you would have to look at the coordinates as a gps location using latitude and longitude.

To the original poster ..

The grid system in place in LOTRO is loosely based on latitude/longitude. The first coordinate of the coordinate pair is latitude (N or S) and the second is longitude (E or W). If two coordinates both have latitudes that are "S", then the one with the larger latitude is more south than the other. If one latitude is "N" and the other "S", the one with "N" is more north. The same rule applies for longitudes. If the longitude of two coordinates are both "E", the one with the greater value is more east. If one is "E" and the other "W", the one that is "E" is more east.

These coordinates apply to the entire LOTRO virtual world.

The only difference between the LOTRO coordinates and latitude/longitude is that latitude/longitude is based on spherical geometry and these coordinates appear to be based on an Euclidean plane.

So my question then is how are the coordinates given here generated? And how do we apply them in-game?

Are you using a third party tool to generate the coordinates or are you estimating them based on the "loc" command in-game? Ultimately my question is how do we use the coordinates given here in-game?

The easiest way to do this, and the least irritating for all the other players, would be to send a tell to yourself like this: /tell yourname ;loc

That command will tell you the two location coordinates that are used on the maps on this site.

Very annoying to have to do that command over and over again, but it works best that way.
