Like the title says, it seems Turbine is now offering a lifetime membership for 299.

Many LOTRO players have asked if there's some way they can purchase a Lifetime Membership. While it’s too late to take advantage of the Founder's Offer, we are pleased to now offer a one-time, US$299 Lifetime Membership pricing option for everyone!

Lifetime Membership means you'll never again have to pay a subscription fee for LOTRO*! You can take advantage of this offer by logging into your account at http://myaccount.turbine.com and selecting the Lifetime option.

Thanks for playing!

*Lifetime Membership is available only for so long as the game is in service.

So, what are everyone's thoughts on that? I'm particularly interested in the founders who bought a lifetime for the 199, but everyone is welcome to weigh in lol

A little too expensive for my tastes... I can see myself budgeting 15 a month for the subscription, but 300 for a lifetime... that means that I have to guarentee myself not to get bored with the game for at least a year and 8 months...

I got the $199 Lifetime founder price, that seemed ok. Doubt I would of jumped on this one if I hadn't gotten the founders price. Although... almost 4 years in FFXI now at 14.95 (have 2 mules).... heck $299 would of been a good deal for me in that game Smiley: tongue

I can't imagine shelling out $299 for a lifetime subscription to a game but, I guess at $15.99 a month for folks, it might make sense to someone.

Still, I'm happy with my $9.99/mth Founder's offer. Small enough not to dent my wallet and, should I decide next month that I'm done with LoTRO, I'm only out $30 instead of $200.

I'd have to agree with Jophiel here. I do month to month since I don't want to feel like I have "locked myself in" to a game I may be bored with in a year. If I paid the $199 founders, I would feel that way. For people being offered a $299 lifetime, I can't say as I would do it myself. I mean, if you divide the 299 by the standard monthly rate of 15.99 (yeah, I'm making an assumption here), that's like saying you are committing to at least 18 months in a game to even out the initial investment.

I guess it's just me but I simply not willing to commit to that kind of thing in a game.

I did the Founder's lifetime subscription for $199, and I'm glad I did, since I know I'm going to get my 200 bucks worth out of this game(and probably then some). If I hadn't done the founders deal and say had just started playing this month, I might would consider the $299 lifetime price, but it would likely be a bit too steep and too much of a commitment for me to take.

One reason I did the Founder's Lifetime subscription was to "lock in" my cost for the game. If I'd done the monthly fee, then had to quit for awhile and come back, the monthly fee would increase 50%. If I was paying $15/month it wouldn't be a big deal to take a month or 2 off and come back to LOTRO later.

The reason I took a lifetime subscription is actually so I wouldn't feel locked into the game... It's much easier (imo) to take a break from playing the game or playing multiple games at once when you don't have to worry about paying a monthly fee. Maybe i'll get bored with it after a year or so, but then I can just leave for a couple months and come right back when the next content update hits or something.

I'm not too worried about that. I've never returned to a MMORPG I cancelled except for once -- I went back to Everquest and then quit once my free "return" month was up.

But my experience may not be the norm.

QFT! Thats exactly why I did it, if I run out of content (LOL Right, at the rate I level?) I can take a few months off, play the MMO of the month at the time, then come crawling back when they add content and know that my toons will still be there, and I don't have to "re-subscribe" at a higher cost than I was origionally paying. Heck as long as the servers are up and I don't do something stupid to break the TOS my sub is active. Smiley: grin

I think i would do it if i had the money available, even though i wish i had pre-ordered the game when i had the chance so i can take the $199 offer.

I did play FFXI a couple months after it launched and i only killed that account a few months ago so i know i played it for about 3 years so i know i would not tire of LOTRO.

but seeing as i don't have 300 i'll just have to stick to the monthly.

My concern with LOTRO is not the $9.99/mo that I am paying, but the possibility that each expansion may cost. So far so good....Evendim was free. Will new areas come at an added expense? Has Turbine indicated whether new regions will be free or not?

We'll see alot of the Evendim type free expansions with an occasional pay for one thrown in. I remember reading the first pay one will probably be Rohan. But the bigger paid expansions will include alot more area than what we saw in Evendim, and thats saying something considering its about the same size as the Shire is.

I should probably clear something up here about expansions...

Evendim was a free content update, turbine has (iirc) said they want to roll about one of these every month or two. In general these will (likely) be like Evendim, although they may also just introduce new instances or more job tweaks/balances.

An expansion to the game will add many new zones and instances, and possibly a level cap increase too. A good example of what an expansion would be is adding in Moria and the stuff to the east like Lothlorien and Rohan. These take a lot more work and are generally something you have to pay for. Thats just the nature of MMOs though, and will be the same for basically any MMO.

So yes, there will be paid expansions, I can almost guarantee you that. However, I can also guarantee you that it'll be a lot bigger then Evendim, we're talking like maybe doubling the game's size for the first one if they release a whole region in it. (Look at your map zoomed all the way out and you'll see what I mean)

I'm a founding member and a lifer and like a couple others here, I took the lifetime option so that I would feel free to leave and come back anytime I chose to.

Having made the commitment to a lifetime sub, I don't feel any pressure to play on any given day. I never feel like I'm wasting part of my 15 bucks by not logging in for an evening or two. The game will be there whenever I want to play and even if I walk away for a month or three, it's paid for!

Regarding Turbine offering this new deal to non-founding players, I don't have a problem with it. The cost is now 50% more then when I bought in so I don't feel like they are "betraying" me (or the founder's deal) in any way.

Besides, the more people who play (at whatever price point), the more likely the game will be up and running as the years go by - making my subscription all the more valuable!

Not only that, even the $299 deal still doesn't give them my uber level 1 ring of agility or my regen cape! Smiley: grin They just get a lifetime sub with none of the items us original founders got.

I went with the lifetime founders 199 deal and I had no real qualms about. Based on the monthly price and my expectancy of how long I will be playing this it seemed like a good deal. I doubt I would've taken a 299 deal though, just a bit more than I would like to see on my credit card for a game, was bad enough explaining to the wife that yes it was 199 but I would never pay for the game again except for expansions.

I'm the same, if you take the monthly fee's away you feel like you can take your time alot more with the game, there's not that looming feeling of having to play 24/7 to get your moneys worth.

One thing that does worry me a tiny bit (because it's way in the future), what would happen if LOTRO ended and codemasters stopped supporting it?

Well, when the game servers are taken down so ends your lifetime subscription... If only codemasters dropped support and turbine was still supporting it they may work out something to bring up EU realms and import the custom data from codemasters. But, thats just a guess IF codemasters ever drops support.

I agree that the $299 deal seems a more expensive prospect than the founders deal I signed up for, but I'm in the "Paid for it and can play when I like" camp like others in this thread. At launch I simply did the maths in my head - "Played FFXI for over 12 months and WoW for over 2 years... $199 is cheap!" and went from there.

#22 Jun 28 2007 at 4:48 AM Rating: Decent
I chose the $9.99/mo option because I was not sure I would make 20 months of playing the game before losing interest. I only lasted 2 with VG and 6 with DDO. Also, at $10/mo I compare it to going to a movie (by mysef, and if I bring the wife and kids....). Movie only lasts 2-3hrs. I get ALL MONTH 24/7 access without someone kicking my chair or eating popcorn loudly in my ear!

I would have probably ponied up $299 for a founders lifetime subscription had that been the price, so I figure the $199 I actually paid is a bargain now.

I got 2 founders at 199. 199/9.99 ~20 months figure I would be playing that long 5yeas EQ 2years EQ2.
