Hey ralphmtsu,
I also recently came back to SWG after a 2-year sabbatical. I left before the NGE changes, so the new system was a shock. But after 2 years, I knew that it would be radically different, especially after reading about the NGE blunder.
After a few days of being back, and after the shock of the changes wore off, I actually liked the new system. As far as I understand, SWG has done a decent job of fixing a lot of the NGE bugs (not all, mind you).
I can't really tell you much about the new PvP, PvE combat system, since I am mostly a trader/crafter. From what some of my guildies tell me, they
mostly like the new combat system. It all depends on what you like to do, and what profession you choose.
I have one level 74 Spy. Before I left, he was a master Pistoleer. It sucks that I have to grind him back up again, but at least he didn't start from a level 5, instead of the level 70 that he was given when I came back. If you want a fighter class, I would probably suggest a BH, Commando, or a Jedi. You can always switch profs to another fighting class without losing levels (except jedi, from what I understand). Although it may cost you money after the first time, unless you got a respec device.
The
Allakhazam,
Warcry, and
SWG Wiki sites all have a lot of relevant useful information on the new system, along with some outdated stuff.
As per the suggestions of some of the people in this thread, I would download the trial, and stick with it at least a week to get a feel for the changes since you were last on. If you like it, then buy/register the full version. From what I can tell, a lot of the servers are still sparsely populated. But the last 6 weeks, I've noticed a huge influx of new and old players. I would suggest starting on Bria, Ahazi, Bloodfin if you are a US player, or Chimaera if you are in Europe.
I hope this helps.
