Harry Potter WarningFollow

#1 Jul 17 2007 at 11:47 AM Rating: Excellent
As most of you probably know the last Harry Potter book, which has been 10 years in the making, comes out this Friday at midnight. Harry Potter may not matter to a lot of people, but he does matter to a good portion of many online communities, including this one. That being said, with the death in The Half Blood Prince came several people who thought it was funny to spoil the ending for people by springing it into threads or creating subjects with complete spoilers in it.

This post is to warn you that depending on the severity of your spoiler, your post count, and account status, posting a spoiler on this board will result in a punishment ranging from a 72 hour mute to a complete banning from the site. As I said, people have waited for this ending for 10 years. It's not funny to ruin it. Really, it isn't.

To those of you who read the books, I urge you to stay off the Internet until you are done reading. You know it will be done and you know that it only takes a second for the damage to be done. If you care enough, just stay away.

ImperialNinja will be watching for spoilers and nuking accordingly.

See thread on FFXI forum for original. Reposted here as well.

Hence the stickie. We don't want this to be "conveniently overlooked".

You've been here long enough to know that people ignore the stickies almost as much as they ignore the EULA, hehe.

I never got into reading the books but I do really enjoy the movies and I completely understand how one could have murder on the mind after waiting so long for the ending only to have some tard ruin it for you because they think they are funny.

Sadly enough, you are correct there Tsa. No matter what we do, there will always be folks who assume we won't address it. Then act surprised when we do.

So far this particular forum hasn't had a problem with it, but I just wanted to post saying that we are VERY serious about this. So far I know of quite a few accounts that have been banned for doing this, so don't even risk it.

A sticky regarding a book would fit on a book forum. Just saying.

Oh yeah, there should be a timer on bannings, very hard to know for how long I was banned. Well, impossible really.

Given the number of book lovers, especially of the entire HP series, we felt that a stickie was more than warranted. People have been waiting for 10 years to find out what finally happens with Harry and Voldemort so people showing up to intentionally ruin it for these folks are dealt with harshly for that reason. And in regards to a mute or ban, that depends entirely on the type of post, the type of poster doing it and the circumstances around it.

All of this is in the stickie incidentally.

I know it is, I read it after I posted my post on the science fiction and fantasy forum. Which is pretty much the book forum on alla's. Why not put this sticky on the book forum on alla's? Would have made sense.

And there is also a difference with starting a post that clearly indicates "spoilers" and a post specifically started to ruin it for other posters.

Yes, I did post it two days before the book was "officially" released, about two days after lots of readers in the US actually already had the book in their mail.

Water under the bridge, I did my time and have learned my lesson I suppose!

And while we're at it no Bourne Ultimatum spoilers or 1408 spoilers either.
