Turbine has started a referral service where players can request guest keys and receive a free month if the key is turned into a purchased retail account.

Read about it

This should make it much easier for people to receive trial keys.

Oh, and the guest accounts are tied to your account so I'd still show discretion in giving away the trial passes. You probably don't want five banned trial accounts linked to you.

I replied to the sticky above, just wanted to say that I have an AC account and a DDO account in good standing with turbine. Please see my above post for my whole story.

IMO, it's about time they added in something like this, especially with all the hype and people wanting to try the game but limited trial keys... which is something people are accustomed to in a sense. The only problem I see with this is that this could cause people to give out more keys then needed, just to try to get playtime. So John A Poster could end up with 10 keys from people trying to get free time... I'd HOPE it wouldn't happen, but this is the human race we are talking about really.

To be less cynical, John A Poster could end up with ten keys because ten readers thought "I wanna help that guy out and let him play."

Anyway, you're notified if your key is used since you only get so many "open" keys at one time. So, if John A. Poster doesn't seem to be using it, you can cancel the key from your end.

Just FYI...

All Guest keys which are sent through the Referral Program are tied to the account which referred them, so if we have to ban one for gold selling, we'll also ban all other Guest keys associated with that account plus the retail account which provided the key.
Again, think about who you're giving your trial keys out to.

That is another way to look at it for sure. I'm normally not that cynical, but when you listen to stories every day of people scamming companies and idiots it wears off on you.

In other words..

If your not my buddy, you ain't getting no key! I'm still not gonna risk a lifetime sub for someone I don't know.

I gave away one of my free buddy keys to a person on here who took the time to write a well thought out request. That will be the one and only time my keys go to someone I haven't known for an extended period of time and trust completely. My lifetime subscription cost a pretty penny and with a kid on the way I have no intention of risking it and having to buy the game all over again and re-subscribe.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe buddy keys are not technically tied to an account. So if you DO have buddy keys left don't be afraid to pass them out if you get the chance. It's the keys from the referral program that are tied to your account (obviously because they have to give you credit and hold a reign on abuse). Giving out a Buddy Key doesn't count toward your account for good or bad.

nope, Patience on the official forums said that the buddy keys are in fact tied to your account also. Now if its true or not... who knows but still not gonna take that chance.

Could someone please give me a trial key? I would love to try the game thanks. I dont wish to give email on the forums seeing as how some people will use it for spam and stuff, so If you could please PM I would appreciate it(I will send you email in PM). I just want to try it before I go out and spend $50, Thanks also..I promise iam not a Gold farmer or nothing like that. I have played FFXI and WOW before this. I have a 60 paladin on the US lightbringer server on WOW and 65 brd on FFXI. I played on and off for a long time and now Iam just fed up with those games. I might start up FFXI with a person I know..if he manages to get the game, but iam seriously considering LOTR as well. I feel the community and the gameplay is better from the videos I have seen and the posts I have read. Thank you.
If I like it, I can also get you free playtime^^.
