In Oblivion, can you join more than one guild? For example join both the Dark Brotherhood and the Thieves Guild?

Yes you can. Sometimes it can cause minor problems if you join them all at once though. Example, you can't steal from other members/kill them/assualt them ect. If you do you get booted and have to rejoin. Alot of random npcs are guild members. I forget if any kick you out for good. When I played I just joined them one at a time and focused on them until I maxed it.

To my knowledge the Mages Guild can kick you out permanently if you are kicked out for a third time (you get 2 shots to rejoin). If you are head of the Mages guild they can't kick you out permanently but you will gain a bounty equivalent to your crimes. The link I gave should give you all the information you'd ever need about the various guilds and factions in Oblivion.

I've joined all guilds on my character and completed all quest lines and I've never experienced any problems. But you might want to join the mages and fighters guild first because I thought they don't accept characters with a criminal 'record', so I've your caught for a crime you could be screwed.

If you have to do quests involving taking things or killing people within other rival guilds try to do them at night. Most times you can get away without being seen when you steal something if you go at night if your stealth is high enough.

Now if you have to kill someone you better make sure you do it in one or two hits otherwise the rest of the guild will wake up and be on your ***.

Yeah you can join multiple guilds, but as has been stated be careful about it. I know for a fact some of the Dark Brotherhood and Thieves' Guild mission conflict with one another, namely there's a point in the DB missions where you end up killing a thief.

Simple way is to join the thieves guild first and acquire the Grey Fox cowl. When you stick it on, anything you do isn't really counted against you since the curse prevents you from being recognized. Use it to complete all those other quests that might conflict other guilds.
