Hi, I am a long time player of FFXI (3 years now) and am getting pretty burnt out on it and am thinking of getting LoTR. However, while I play on both Xbox and PC, I use a controller for all game functions and keyboard only for chat. I am rather keyboard challenged (4 finger typer). I've looked everywhere I can think of for an answer but haven't found one so I thought I'd ask you good folks.

Can LoTR be played on PC with a controller, or is it strictly keyboard and mouse? The answer will unfortunately determine whether or not I purchase the game. Its hard to play when you have to look at the keyboard to move and fight.

Thank you.

I think you can have some success with a controller but you will be limited. You can only map so may things to the buttons and there are more skills and things to 'click' than that would allow. I think you could get away with movement and basic combat / world interaction but then you would need to use keyboard shortcuts or a mouse for the remainder of the skills.

Maybe try finding someone you know that has a 10 day trial "Buddy Key" and try it out before you commit to either buying it or not trying it. It's really a great game.

Cheers.

To be honest... any PC game can be played with a controller somewhat. There are programs that let you emulate mouse and keyboard commands with a controller. The bigger question is can you play it effectively with a controller, and the answer in this case is no.

However, it would be a shame if you let that decide whether you were going to buy this game or not. It may seem clunky at first, but it works for the game. Indeed, it works for PC games in general, as it is the standard WASD movement with mouse look. So moving is very friendly even for a slow typer or someone who is keyboard challenged.

The only reason FFXI on the PC feels more comfortable and natural using the controller is because it is first and foremost a console game designed to be played with a controller. A game that is designed to be played with the keyboard/mouse like LotRO (and most other MMOs and PC games) is totally different and you should really try it before writing it off totally just because you can't really use a controller to play a game.
