Spamming Gold SellersFollow

#1 Sep 06 2007 at 7:16 AM Rating: Decent
Gold selling mail and ingame tells seem to be getting worse. This moring 9/6/07 from 6am to 7 am (one hour) I had 2 mail messages in my toons mailbox and recieved 6 ingame tells about buying gold and power leveling.

Sorry, I know this has been answered before but, here it goes. How do you report gold sellers?

I sure hope they don't ruin this game too. In final fantasy all the rare spawns were camped 24/7, mining nodes were monopolized, and the game developers ingame answer to control gold sellers and farmers penalized regular players too severly.

To report them, hit the <esc> key then choose help, then submit new ticket. I report them under harassment personally.

Problem is about reporting them, they seem to delete their characters/accounts quickly. For example, about a minute after getting a gold spam tell, I try to ignore them and get "Character doesn't exist". Does anyone know if Turbine logs IPs of log ins? Guessing that will be about the only way to get rid of them. Only other way is to get all the MMO companies together and do a mass lawsuit against all of them.

Game companies do have the IP addresses of the accounts in question so even if said maggot deletes the character name, the report of gold selling is taken seriously and the matter is addressed. To date, I have 21 gold seller reports resulting in a ban myself, which I take as such from the email I get in my inbox about it. You can also check your tickets in game and there is typically a note from a GM about it. Turbine takes a hardline stance on these maggots so even though you may think it doesn't do any good to report these rat bastards, please continue to do so. The more players we have who report them and grief them when they try to show up and ruin this game like they've ruined so many others means a better overall playing experience for us.

Now, I don't normally espouse poor play behavior in game but I will say that, in the case of these maggots, you really don't need to be at all nice to them when they harass you with their broken English, annoying tells and/or poorly worded in game emails. But that's me :)

I myself have only gotten about 1 or so a week in the mail system but I have only received maybe 6 or so tells over the course of the game about it. I have reported every single one and usually get a very prompt response. I hope it is effective and everyone who gets one of these "ads" does report them.

By the way, don't even open the in-game mails when you get them since they were probably sent "cost collect" and paying to receive spam is just adding insult to injury! Simply report and delete based on the title of the mail.

doht! thanks for that tip OBD.

Old blue thx for the tip on not opening the mail from the gold sellers. That would really suck paying to read unwanted spam.

Just had my last post dis-allowed for content. That a new filter? I swear it was totally within bounds and not even a rant. I was just agreeing with OBD that I delete those types of mails unread.

Another tip (Thanks to Kitca) is to check the 'anonymous' box on the Social Panel. Since doing that I've had no in-game spam.

As OBD says, the emails are best deleted unread.

I use that tip too. Seems to work.

I sometimes do not want my Minstrel to go Anon though. I got three tells (reported all) from different names, in about 20 minutes last night in North Downs. All for the same site too. One was for Powerleveling and two for gold service.

I do not see how this (RMT gold in LOTRO) is profitable. Seems like it would cost more money to keep setting up accounts than you could ever make selling gold. Don't you need to buy a game (account key) and at least a month service (or are they getting buddy keyed?) for every name that eventually gets banned 5 minutes after they send out tells/mails?

They seem to be getting worse on Landroval now, I'm getting at least 2 tells a day. Still promptly reporting them of course. I hate going anon but it looks like that might be the next route.

Hmm, didn't know about that. Makes you wish they charged a deposit and if you get banned for violating the ToS, you lose it.

Keep reporting these maggots folks, no matter how annoying it gets. The more we report, the more we get banned. Who cares how many of these accounts these filthy sellers make, community effort to keep this game from falling into the same mire as every other game these losers infest.

I really don't understand how they get away with such things. Surely it would be easy to implement a system whereby nobody on a 7 day trial is allowed to /tell more than 5 different people in the space of a minute, then generate a flag for people that do this so a GM can immediately check their /tells and ban their account as appropriate. I assume that something like this exists and they don't rely on people to report such behavior, because with macros or whatever they use, they can /tell the entire population of an area before the reports get seen by a GM, and if such a system doesn't exist it needs to be created asap!

Maybe such a system exists already, but if so perhaps the harshness of the system needs to be upped a bit, as within the space of 30 seconds my entire kinship seems to have had a message off one single seller. I never bother reporting anymore anymore because by the time I've filed a report, it should be obvious to the people in charge that some bad behavior has been committed, and indeed, the character often no longer exists by the time I've written it. Now I just forget about it and don't even bother putting them on ignore.

They need to ban IP's when they are associated with gold selling spam. They can check the logs and verify that my report is accurate that Joe Goldseller sent me a tell about buying gold, then they can check the IP associated with that toon and nail it. If they are actually doing that, I don't know but that would be the route I would take if I were them. Banning accounts, even trial ones does nothing when the same people just get more accounts, you need to get them at the base, if nothing else it will make it more of a nuisance for them to get on since they will have to use proxy's and what not to get around an IP ban.

Lately gold sellers spam has increased. I seem to be getting 5 to 6 ingame tells a night. Everytime I turn on I have one or two mail messages about buying gold or power lelveling.

I've been playing MMO's for over 10 years and this is the most I've seen gold selling advertizing this blatant in any game.

I wonder if the other MMO's are be infested with ingame spam and emails like LOTR?

Has anyone detected a massive increase of gold sellers dominating rare spawns, mining, forestry, or any other ingame resources? I know I gave up mining MM silver on my server seems they had a toon camping almost every mining point available. Really sucked the fun out of the game trying to race to a mining point and see a level 5 toon camping it.

WoW, DAoC and SWG all had the exact same issues when I played, which was a big part of why I stopped playing them all. I am sick to death of some poorly worded tell or email telling me to buy something and help ruin a game I am playing, it's offensive to me. WoW it is much more blatant given the style of the game but these maggots infest and attempt to ruin every game they come in contact with. As long as there are losers who will buy gold and take the easy way instead of working for their stuff like a real player would, these annoying, pathetic sites will exist and thrive.

So the other side of the coin is to make it as hard for the pathetic losers who buy gold as well as the idiots who sell it. Hear about someone buying it, report it. See a tell or an email spam, report it.

But I say this, if you don't report it and do your part for the game community to keep it clear of this filth, (this is for everyone, not one particular person btw) then you are basically allowing these idiots to continue this and you become part of the problem. Sure it's easy to go anon and sure it's easy to ignore or delete the email but they will still continue. That doesn't make them go away, it simply makes it so you don't have to see it.

Well, in my opinion anyways, it's only if communities work as a collective whole to report buyers and sellers both that this kind of crap be checked and either slowed down or stopped.

Just my 2 coppers...

A big, hearty amen to this thread! I generally report every spammer the moment I get a tell, unless I'm in combat -- and then, it's reported as soon as possible afterward. The sooner we knock a free account off, the more of their time they have to waste creating new ones. And every now and then, I will insert a reminder in the text of my report requesting that the CSR IP ban the offender. A friend of mine believes it's likely that these offenders are using dynamic IP addresses, so it may not be possible to block them totally, but I still ask for the death penalty.

Rate up for adding the IP ban request as well.

I just finished playing a 7 day trial. I had 0 access to email or auction house. That kinda rules out the 7 day trial email spam idea.

Ok I use Anon all the time and still get the occasional email (unerstandable since then can troll the forums and leech our names from there), but after I posted an Auction recently I got 2 spams rather fast. I realized then that they are now starting to us the AH to get the names of people, since this works whether they are Anon or not. Makes me want to start an ALT, make him Anon and just use him for my auctions (sure makes things easier to mail them to the alt who just stays in the AH). Of course they also troll the AH now too, they see your name and send you a tell. Got one the other night as well. Yes I report them as soon as I get them, after I also shoot them a tell back tell them to,"Die in a fire".

Hmm, I usually /r die c***sucking maggot (without the stars) just before I report them. It's not likely they will report ME...

So the 7-dayers are not using these, but you can still use tells correct? And their goldfarming high-leveler can get the names from the AH for the spammer to use. I did notice a wee bit of a drop-off in in-game mail spam but not much (been a few days since last mail spam).

All the tell-spammers I inspect are level 1 or 2. I'm surprised they do not go Anon, but likely they do not care since they are dead a few minutes after their spam hits the fan.

I have been spammed to death. Nearly always get 3 to 4 in a 4 hour period. Very distracting particularly if you are waiting for a friend to log on and you happen to be in a battle.

I also wonder if this is what is driving up the cost of crafting mats in the AH. Some of the prices are ridiculous. Best Answer I guess is for no one to buy.

I will start reporting them immediately after reading these posts.
