I've recently read some threads about people assuming that Square needs to focus on 360 or even Microsoft for future console gaming. First off I just want to say that FF fanbase world wide is just a margin compared to what it is in Japan alone. Now look at the sales of consoles in Japan http://videogamecharts.com/page5.html (just one of many sources) More people own Wii (nintendo) and PS3 in Japan than the 360.
The 360 just made a dent in the Japanese population if you compare it to what it did in the US and Europe, also just look at the sales of the PS3 and Wii compared to the 360 in Japan alone.
We all know that Square-Enix-Japan never does a simultaneous release for a major FF game (next gen FF premiere). So if they released it in Japan first, what would be the smartest platforms to market? Again look at the sales charts. Now the Wii is good but its not next gen quality, that leaves the PS3. These games always release months or a year later for English gamers and on top of that its always a port. A lot of developers say that when you take a game from PS3 to 360 or vice versa you have to develop the game from scratch because of the CPU architecture differences. So to avoid a headache Square is just gonna market the game on the PS3 or if anything else nintendo because thats what they did in Japan.
Also with the franchise alone look at some of the series that were never even released in America, if so like 12 years later on a hand held device. The RPG market in Japan is like their biggest industry in gaming next to the party style game. Anyway look at all of the games that did big over there that never released here in the rpg genre.
Western developers are rising high and mighty with the whole gaming industry, but thats off topic. I just want to point out that on the 360 and even PS3 what have western developers put out there. Shooters, what do we have to look forward to from them? Shooters...
People who read this forum love RPGs right? its what final fantasy is.
For the 360 what titles have owners been looking forward to. Call of Duty 3, Fear, Gears of war shooter, Perfect Dark Zero, Graw, The Darkness, Graw 2, Bioshock, Metal of Honor Airborne, Halo 3, Call of Duty 4, Unreal 3, Army of Two, Timeshift, Brothers in Arms, list goes on... These are all shooters and almost all of the ones that have came out are good.
Now lets look at RPGs for the 360: FFXI, Oblivion, Enchanted Arms, Blue Dragon, Two Worlds, PSU, looking forward to Mass effect, lost odyssey and Last Remnant. There are a few more but most of these games suck.
Anyway the topic is Final Fantasy. Look at the links below for FF next gen.
Some new project: Fabula Nova PS3 first
http://na.square-enix.com/e306/titles/fabula/
Next Gen MMO: PS3-Vista
(because of japan release first we will see a PS3 title first)
http://cannotlinkto.com/2rhae8
FFXIII: PS3 and Mobile devices
Any other FF title more than likely a handheld device than a 360.
Square is doing Last Remnant for all platforms, and a formal guy from the FF series dev team is helping microsoft of Lost Odyssey.
Anyway if you want these games, stop being a xbox fan boy and just buy what these game are comming out for or quit being naive and think that since the 360 sold so well in America that Square should just switch the future of FF to premiere on the 360 rather than anything else.
