movin from WoW to LOTROFollow

#1 Oct 01 2007 at 8:31 AM Rating: Default
Hey all,

well the subject says it all, i'm thinking of making the switch. I've got end game toons in wow and well i'm just uterly sick of the lack of groups to be found, lack of tanks, healers ext, Raids and whining about who gets what and all that non sense. The typical night of wow is ending up either a. playing an alt, or b. trying to get a group together for something worth while as i sit and farm hour after hour. Anyway was just wondering if there are any others around that have made the switch and how they find this game in comparision.

Thanks in advance.

I did the move and don't regret it. I completely understand your logic and reasoning for looking for something else. This community seems very nice and helpful.

On a simi related topic, I am thinking of coming back into the game as an alt play.

Still playing XI with my girl, but when shes not around or whenever the mood stikes, I am playing something else.. WoW, or on my PS3.

Anyhoo, what changes have been made since launch? How's the lag problem?

Lag has gotten a lot better of late, although you still run into issues during "prime time" and in cities. Gold farmers are still trying to make a toe hold in the game but Turbine has been extremely aggressive in dealing with them.

Overall, I would say that the game has had some really good improvements and fixes that are making it a lot more fun to play.

I just became a LOTRO convert from WOW. There are enough similarities (key strokes, etc) to not feel totally like a fish out of water. So far, LOVE it. I, too, was becoming bored because I'm not really into all of the intensity of end game play. This group also seems to be comprised of much more mature folks - you don't see all of the pettyness. Give it a try, I think you'll be pleased

I too am thinking of coming to this. I mainly only play WoW for the raids. that is only 2 days a week for kara since my guild aint that far. I currently got a 27 dwarf champ. I love this game its alot more mature. Everyone is helpful. I even hang out with my manager from work. >.> But anyway the game is real simular controls etc. there is a raiding if you wanna do the raids. The lore of the game is also awesome. Well i hope this helps. send me a private message if you play on gladden if you got any questions i can try to help ya out.

I too, am a WOW convert. I started playing EQ, then went to WOW. However, Blizz made me really mad over the past several weeks. First, they make me change a toon's name after 2 years! (not RP enuff they said, but I appealed and lost) Then they have a Brewfest..which sets a wrong example to the younger kids playing IMHO..then let's not forget the rudeness and stupidity that goes on in the trade channel..or the RP nonsense that Goldshire has become...

I have a 70 lock and a 44 rogue. I'm in a fantastic guild...but I like LOTRO much better. The look and feel of the game isn't so cartoonish...people treat you nicely! And you don't see barely dressed females running all over the place (not that I mind being 40 in RL, but not a good example for kids)

I have a pretty good computer system..but the only drawback to LOTRO is that is seems "jumpy" as I run..maybe it's a lag issue?

BRING ON STAR TREK!!

Some of the jumpiness can be adjusted in the engine settings. Hit the <esc> key then choose options. Go to the troubleshooting tab on the bottom right. In here, scale your framerate back to 30 FPS and set engine speed to medium, that sometimes helps with the jerking around.

I'll be the nub here by simply stating: LOTRO > WoW

Like a lot of people, i've made the move from WoW to LoTRO and I must say, what a decision. Though, I cannot speak from a PVP perspective as thats not really my strong point (though I did do the odd Raid etc.) I found the communtiy one hell of a lot freidnlier and (in RP terms) a lot more fun.

Plus, it's Tolkein. :P

I'm making the move also..well as soon as my 3.9gb download is finished. I'm an older player and this looks more my speed. Tired of the lil kids, fart jokes, raids for uber leet gear, and the cartoon graphics.

First off, let me say up front I've basically moved from FFXI to LoTR and am loving it so far. I've never played WoW but just wanted to add some caution to everyone's comments about the community.

I think FFXI players like to think of themselves as more mature and helpful than your stereotypical WoW teenie bopper (not my stereotype). However, as in any game, you're of course going to run into your fair share of jackasses. So just take everyone's comments with a grain of salt. Just because you run into someone greedy or unfriendly in LoTR doesn't mean you should give up on the game. Don't let one bad experience make your decision.

I myself have had very good experiences with LoTR players and have had a blast learning the game. Overall, everyone is kind of in that 'newb' mode trying to figure everything out and get through quests and its a lot of fun. I'm not sure about WoW, but its a very different game than FFXI and I like it for those differences. I'd just say give it a shot and you can still go back if you don't like it. If you can get a free buddy pass or whatever, even better.

I too am starting to drift to lotro from WoW. Things are a little more complicated for me than just unsubscribing from WoW, a 60+ player guild who I happen to be GM of brings into account some other conciderations but so far I'm 80% sure I'll make the switch.

I'm tired of WoW playing for so long, have 2 70's and numerous alts lvl 40-60. Not progressing at all in the last few weeks in regards to raiding and the 'been there bought the t-shirt' feeling has worn me down, I may go back for the expansion but for now I'm loving Lotro.

A level 16 minstrel I'm finding a challenge though but the learning process makes it all worthwhile. I'm not part of any kinship yet, I wanted to be sure I wasn't going to just put the game down after a week and waste peoples time before joining one but now I think I really should, I miss the friendship of a kinship/guild/clan and besides, there's got to be a lot I'll learn the hard way if i don't 'join the community'. Loving it so far :)

If you roll on Meneldor, you can shoot me a tell for an invite to the Allakhazam kinship "There Is No Fifth Star" (or TiNFS for short). Character names are either Flosli or Durskaldir.

We have around 80 members or so I believe, some from here, some from in game but a lot of the content managers and admins here, myself especially, play so you may run into us there as well :)

If he's on US Version. . .

I've still not met many other Brits on the US Servers, but unless OldHolborn's committed to EU version, I'd recommend Wordaen's suggestion and roll a US account. (Not straightforward but can be done legitimately - Send a PM if you're interested)

It's sometimes frustrating when the Septics in the Kinship are starting raids just as I'm heading for my mug of cocoa and the midnight news, but it's kewl being able to farm and grind deeds when all the Yanqui's are safe abed :-)

Yep, I'm in the same vote... The amount of **** decisions Blizzard have come out with lately is unbelievable - its time for a change & I think lotro might be the next game.

LOTRO is a great way to take a break from WoW. I play LOTRO for a month at a time about twice a year. It's nice and relaxing, like a walk through a garden. After awhile, though, I can't help going back to WoW for more exciting quests and leveling.

I'm primarily a FFXI player, though I have tried D&D, GW, and WoW before. I took a stab at LotRO tonight and my initial reaction is: it's just like WoW. Well, close enough.

I was a little underwhelmed, to say the least.

I'm going to keep on truckin' and hope the story wins me over.

I don't mean for it to sound like LotRO is a WoW clone, but the game is very similar in several instances. UI is nearly identical, you kill boars in the beginning and get the same kind of drops, etc, etc. These are just my initial impressions. I've only got a level 5 Burglar and have only been able to play with the abilities available so far.

The aesthetics are definitely different and, depending on your taste, possibly better. My fiancee, a fellow FFXI player, preferred LotRO greatly to WoW in that department.

Everygame is going to be a WoW clone though...its a game that sold millions, why wouldnt other companies use the same idea?

Of course there are boars in this game...its not like they can make up fantasy creatures like WoW...they have RULES to follow...if you've read LOTR you know this.

Boars being in both games is not a good example either...if thats the case I played a WoW clone on my grandparents farm when they butchered the pigs.

I did the WoW thing for a while but never got past circa level 40 with my Tauren Shaman. It just never captured my interest the way Lotro has with things such as:

1. The Epic Storyline that allows you to literally enter the lore of Tolkien as well as countless quests available for leveling as well as character immersion.

2. The non-rushed feeling of the game. With WoW there was this constant 'hurry up and get to the end-game' sensation I always had. Lotro totally lacks this and even makes itself friendly to the non-power-leveler type (like me) and gives viable rewards for exploration, deed accomplishment etc...

3. Community. For all that I was in a Guild (for the last few weeks of my WoW sojourn) in WoW, I have been able to more readily receive assistance from relative strangers in the aspect of quest assistance, general game functionality, MOB locations, drop zones etc etc...
Also there is a much lower percentage of trolls and jerks in general.

4. Graphically, the game is fairly 'real' looking at the higher graphic settings. So depending if you like realistic vs. the cartoony look of WoW, its a personal call there. Some of the nature graphics are ridiculously amazing, though. The Shire on a good day is rendered beautifully enough to actually make me feel 'at peace'. Seriously, Turbine did good.

That's my take in a nutshell. I'd really say that overall Lotro is a better gaming environment than WoW except if you're a total power-gamer. Then I would say stay on WoW where they have accelerated level progression 'til 60 and practically no character death penalty.

Oh, and BTW. Skeezix, were you in a guild called the Dread Milkmen? If yes, then you might remember my old toon Fynaryus.

Just started myself over the weekend, just wanted to know what you expected?

The fact that leveling is mostly quests and not grinding away is a big plus, but this brings into focus the problem with making many unique and also fun quests is that you need fluff (gather/kill quests) since the unique / fun quests take a lot of design and testing time and are typically missions/storyline in most games.

When you do get involved in the Epic line of quests you'll love those for sure if you prize storyline involvement and progression.

Since I just started I find the game refreshing and new as is expected, the UI is easily modified and the quest descriptions are frequently good enough to get you pointed in the right direction but requiring "exploring" almost all the time.

So if a prospective player is the type to like to look up everything on wowhead this might not be your cup of tea

The leveling pace so far is pretty fast imo but I can't speak for later levels. I can't speak for Gold issues since I don't currently use it but seem to be managing just fine thanks to some generous Kinship folks donating some bows (rolled a hunter for a change of pace from my normally critical tank/healer roles in the ffxi and wow to R&R here).

What does speak volumes about the game is that I spent nearly the entire weekend playing (fiancee was working =P ) it when I'm at a point in my life where I rarely spend more than 4-5 hours a day on weekends on FFXI or WoW.

The world is absolutely gorgeous if you can crank the settings to High and beyond.

The difference between LoTRO and the other games is that it is a real invitation to spend some money on a good system rewarding you tangibly for upgrading instead of just being slightly different or smoother.

FFXI looks basically the same and WoW isn't much different in my experience if you play at 1280x1024 on a ATI 9800pro or 1920x1200 on a 8800 Ultra short of using 3rd party tools to increase draw distance in FFXI's case which is at best a minor improvement since you are still saddled with textures so low resolution it's sad considering the excellent artistic/design value it has.

WoW I won't comment on too much because I have trouble "getting into" the graphics.

EQ2 is a exercise in frustration with regards to stable(ish) framerates, one minute you'll be zipping along the next you'll be a slideshow. The textures are of great quality but the environment can potentially be very monotonous/repetitive. A major step up from FFXI in the texture department but hamstringed by a generally poor environment design.

So now for downsides from my n00b perspective:

The HUD/Map is nearly useless in a Wooded area and only moderately useful otherwise but on the otherhand in dungeon's it's a draw as you explore type deal which is very much welcome vs. quest/buy to obtain.

The in game map other than for cities is useless

On Vista64 I get fairly frequent crashes (about once per hour), I know lolvista but this game actually does some nice graphical enhancements that are DX10 based.

Finding groups for non-soloable quests can be hard (personally if I have trouble I just carry on leveling until I'm capable of soloing them anyway).

Anyway that's enough from me since I'm already at risk for getting TL;DR's

I've been involved with Lotro since the beta, but since I've been in pretty deep with WoW for the past year, I had never gotten very far in Lotro. Now that my next WoW 70 is just around the corner WoW is becoming old for me and I've just about reached the "meh, been there, done that" syndrome. Now I'm starting to get back into playing Lotro again and I've found it to be a very refreshing change. Someone mentioned that the UI operates like WoW and that's pretty accurate, but the similarity ends there. So if you're like me, getting bored with WoW and looking for something different, Lotro is a good place to start.

I played Beta and pre-ordered LOTRO, but I became so disillusioned with it that I never opened the box once it arrived from Gamestop. Around the same time I was playing LOTRO Beta, I started playing WoW. A few weeks ago, after my WoW Hunter had done about all I cared to do (70, epic flying mount, fully leveled pets, fully leveled crafts, etc.), and the RP options started thinning out, I found myself with a couple of weeks "downtime" after surgery. I decided to open the LOTRO box that had been collecting dust since last spring.

I haven't fully abandoned WoW ... yet ... but my Guild there has started pasting my Draenei's picture to the sides of milk cartons. I love the graphics in LOTRO. The UI (which seemed somewhat "clunky" to me in Beta) feels much smoother. The attitude of almost everyone I've met has been friendly and helpful. In fact, I've even bitten the bullet to start over in LOTRO on a more "RP-populated" server.

Aside from the very rare intrusion of someone shilling for the gold sellers (which I quickly mute with the "Ignore" function), there is no aspect of the game I have not enjoyed. I appreciate the chance to explore a setting that has been a favorite of mine for more than 30 years. I look forward to seeing more of this amazing world.
