Tips to save on repair feesFollow

I didn’t realize this when I was first starting out, so hopefully it helps someone else.

Since you get some gear as loot or for finishing quests, they also lose durability points if you die. When you get ready to repair, however, the list shows all repairable items in your inventory. To save time, I generally just did “repair all” rather than seek out individual pieces to repair. In the first few levels, I thought, repairing sure is expensive compared to what I manage to raise with vendor loot.

Later I realized that I was also repairing items in the inventory which I didn’t intend to keep. So to get around this, either sell off items first, before repair, or click on the check box to show only equipped gear. (It defaults to show all gear). Another way to get around this is that for gear you want to keep, keep it in the bank, not on your personal inventory. This keeps you from having to repair it when you didn’t even really use it (since dying will happen).

Also, I know some people like to have exceptional gear whenever they can. At early levels, this may go against your goal of raising money because it costs more to repair exceptional gear.

Generally I still like to repair everything in inventory, so I chose the method of selling items first to get rid of gear I don’t want. This is because some items I may switch in and out, or for my tradeskill tools, I always want to repair them also, even if not equipped.

Unfortunately, if there is gear in your bags that you would like to sell at the AH, you will have to repair it first since nothing damaged can be put up for sale.

Also, early on, try not be swayed into using an item just because it is purple... Keep a close eye on stats and be aware of what you really need since there is often a yellow item that carries the same or better stats and will cost far less to keep mended.

When you die the items in your *inventory* become worn and need repair??!!

Major suckage. Didn't know that.

Sometimes repairing an item nets you more at the vendor then not repairing it(even subtracting the repair cost). Off the top of my head it would look something like this- item value at vendor 2s- repair cost 50c- vendor offer while damaged 60c--- worth repairing before selling to get the whole 2s. If you are a copper pincher like me you should watch out for those. Not all items are worth repairing though(earrings for example).

There are other things to keep in mind when repairing gear.

Housing
Reputation

Example, After a long series of quests, I checked 3 places for repair costs.

Area where I had 0 reputatoin: 253s

Kinship housing area(also where my character's home is): 198s

Area where I had "friend" reputation: 192s

Make sure you are repairing in the area where you'll pay the least.

Was tooling around in Imlad Balchorth yesterday. In the west end there are deadly pools that kill you instantly. I was geting the beat down from several adds so instead of dying to them, I ran into a pool and died from mis-adventure. Instant port out and repairs were much less. It costs me roughly 60-70sp per death by NPC, misadventure costs around 5sp.

So if you are going to die anyway, look for a cliff or a poison pool...

Death by natural causes costs A LOT less then death by a monster.

When you go to a vendor to repair you can check the box "Show Only Equipped Items" so you wont accidentally repair things that are in your bags.

As stated you *MUST* repair items in your inventory to sell them on the AH, but you can still sell them in /Trade, or give them away to people that might find them usefull.

I only repair the things i need to repair and I don't repair all. I save lots of money from repairing by doing that. But i nearly always have to repair my tools but I don't want to put them in the bank because I want to cut down trees when i am out.

Are equippable items the only things that take damage?

Stuff in bags takes damage. I usually sell stuff first and do repairs last when visiting a merchant. I use repair-all 'cause im lazy...

There are actually three different possible discounts available in housing areas;

If you are at the merchant where your kinship's house is located there is a 15% discount.

At the merchant where your own house is located there is a 20% discount.

And if your personal house and your kinship house are in the same homestead & neighborhood you'll receive a 25% discount from the local merchant.

(I am writing this from memory and might be slightly off in the percentages but if so these should be close)

Also I think you get discounts on your repair bill if you live in an housing area. If somebody could confirm that it would be great.

Yep, several people confirmed already. Another note that someone also said, if your house and kinship house is in the same area, you get even more discount!
