My LotRO Rants!Follow

My first rant has to do with me. I wish that I could get over the healer mode I'm (apparently) used to having. Don't get me wrong, I'm LIKING the fact that my minstrel needs a group to do the simplest of things. I just wish that I could *remember* that this is the case rather then dying 2-3 times before I notice a problem! Damn you easy MMO's that have spoiled me into thinking it's my right as every class to accomplish the same thing, in the same way, at the same level, with every class! It doesn't help I play 2-3 MMO's at a time. So I have trouble remembering how each works right away.

Thank you Tovin for answering a question on my biggest problem with WoW and why I'm searching for an alternative. In EQ if you were a healer, or as it happens a ranger as my alt was, you simply couldn't do the same things as other classes solo. That was sometimes frustrating and requires some away time doing something else on occasion to calm down. My biggest complaint was how easy it was to level my holy priest in WoW, they seem to have spent so much time balancing it for pvp and to give everyone the same chance to level that while it is ever so slightly tougher to level a priest than say a hunter it's still not challenging.

I like the challenge, I like helping people, I like healing... I choose my class to suit how I like to play when I'm in a group and this often requires a group to do things which other classes can solo, do I have a problem with my "weaker" soloing abilities? No. Why? I like the sense of achievement that you have completing something in a group where the abilities of that group really do complement each other, less focus on soloability and more on using your talents in a way that your class was designed for is a bonus.

Don't get me wrong I don't like doing things the hard way for the sake of it, I just think it's better for the classes to reflect their role rather than equalising (in one way or another) all classes for the sake of satisfying someone who doesn't have the time to play the game properly.

I've only played the free trial on the US LoTRO and just restarted on the EU version now I've managed to get hold of a copy at a decent price, and if as you say they've dealt with this easy-button problem WoW has then I for one can only look forward to paying LoTRO and although I know I'll be tearing my hair out at various points through my healing career after umpteenth deaths to trash mobs I'll also be playing the healing class(es) the way they were meant to be played!

Hurrah!

Ah....that argument again. I don't know, i would love to drop a note saying Some random monster that gives me cool stuff spawns here. And i don't know why they don't do this in every MMO i have ever seen. Placing map notes is important.

I went back to the trusty UO days! I now lovingly have a book next to my computer once again that has my notes.

What levels drop what type of hides.
Areas on the map to re-visit.
Things I'd like to remember.
NPC names and areas to remember.

ah, the good old days!

For as long as I have been gaming on the computer, I have kept a small spiral notebook and/or a mini legal pad on a clipboard next to me at my computer desk.

Every time I start a new game (or fill a book or pad in an existing game) I get out a fresh one!

Beginning in games like Baldur's Gate and continuing on through 5 years in both EQ & EQ2 it was an invaluable tool for remembering not only quest steps and NPC locations but also ingredients for various recipes and even current pricing trends on any item I was selling or looking to buy. In addition, I keep a "wish list" of items I have seen and would like to acquire.

Back in the day, it was critical to create and maintain maps just so you could easily find your way around from one session to the next. I can remember creating extensive maps while playing through all the infocom games on my old Apple IIE. It was the only way to survive!

Yeah but that detracts from actually playing the game....you can't go on the computer and do work. You must have everything on a plate. Also wouldn't it be better if the placement was actually on the screen with the good map they have on there then your scrawly map that is probably way off scale that it probably is useless.

Thats what i use the "Bio" section on my character panel screen for. Just hit "C" to bring up your Characterm, click the little "Bio" tab at the bottom, and "Edit" the message.

I dont always do that...most of the time it has something non-sensical written in it..."Hey, I like poking dead things with a stick, wanna date?"

Things I sometimes play...

"What do you want to be when you grow up?"
"I want to be a unicorn!"
"Awww, why's that?"........
"So I can stab people with my face."

Suzy has killed us off 12 times, and gone afk for 45 minutes at least twice after being 90 minutes late to the roll call! But she's the GM's wife, so whatcha gonna do?!

I especially love this part of the rant. My name is Susan, and I'm our GM's wife. [insert evil smiley here]
