Hey Darkckai. I'm also a FFXI player and I just tried LotRO tonight for a little while. I wanted a different experience, as I felt frustrated with FFXI and have all week.

It is of my opinion that LotRO resembles WoW and other MMORPGs a lot. The setting, dialogue, race choices and such are definitely right on for Tolkein fans; but if you've already played these other games to death, it might feel more of the same.

Still, there's a free trial with a digital download on the official site. It couldn't hurt to give it a try and see if it tickles your fancy.

The main difference in this game is the character customization. You can be the same race, have the same gear as another player...yet you can use many tributes to change the stats of your character.

The story line is very much by the books. Basically right down to the trees.

Visually, yes it looks like WoW. Thats where the similarites end. The UI from WoW was easy to use, it was alot of peoples first mmo...so yes Turbine used the same idea because they new a lot of first time players would be trying this game, and also children. Would you rather they make it complex (like ffxi), so that noone wants to play anymore and the game shuts down?

Honestly, every game is the same if you think about it:
- You kill stuff
- You gain xp
- You find items
- You ***** about someone stealing your mob

My advice: You will only get as much out of a game as you put into it.

As a former FF player since NA release, I'd say you should at least give the game a try if you're getting bored of FF. I was wary at first but since I had a couple of friends playing, I took a chance and I've loved every minute of playing. It's different, fun, and totally unlike FF.

The comparisons to WoW are fairly apt; the game is very similar to WoW in the interface but the storylines and quest series go much deeper. Visually, IMO, the game is different. WoW has a bit of cartoony feel to it; LotRO can be jaw-dropping in places (Rivendell or the Shire on a clear day for example).

You aren't going to get the in-depth group sessions in LotRO that you get in FF and every level isn't a grind on similar mobs for hours on end. You can technically solo up to level 50 but that can be boring. The most I've ever been in a party was for about an hour and that was for finishing off a book (similar to rank missions in FF). At the same time, it's nice to be able to quest out a level in a couple of hours rather than spending several days or weeks working on it, looking at the same scenery and going LFG on a melee job is a thing of the past. You may lose some of the community feel that FF has but if you get a good kinship or a good server (personally, I'd recommend Landroval - the unofficial RP server), that should offset that disadvantage. There's also plenty to do besides just xping including crafting, deeds, working on your house, exploring, etc.

The one bad thing about LotRO is that finishing off a difficult quest isn't nearly as exciting as it can be in FF. Anybody who's completed CoP for example, knows what I mean... The best part is no xp penalty when you do something stupid and get yourself eaten by a giant troll.

I have absolutely no idea what end-game has to offer (my highest level is 37) so somebody else can chime in there.

I started playing LOTRO months ago, before the release of the first book expansion, and I've only recently hit 50. In terms of end-game stuff, originally it was just Helegrod which is a large 24-man raid, but since the expansions other places have been added (The Rift etc). Problem is, with the new areas, people hardly do Helegrod anymore. So there I'm sitting with 12 quests for the damn place and no chance of ever completing them.

sounds like you haven't tried WoW but have a vendetta against it for some reason.

personally, I hate Diablo I and II but if they ever come out with a version I like, I'll play it.

i think LOTRO and FFXI are different games that appeal to different aspects of game-playing. Just because their classes or lore aren't similar doesn't mean that it sort of follows some of the same aspects of mmorpg design.

later there is some kind of pirate mmorpg coming out. other than the pirate skin and stories, the formula will probably be similar.

give the trial a try and see if it meets your needs.

i like almost everything about LOTRO except the low population. can't find groups when you want them, and can't sell stuff on AH even at low or average prices because not enough buyers.

I played FFXI for 5 years, ran everything there was to run, then tried LOTRO.

I skipped the WoG expansion, moved our LS to LOTRO and we're not looking back.

head to head I'd say they're different games but LOTRO is far superior. But having long hated WoW, I would say letting similarities bother you would be doing yourself a disservice. I cant and never have gotten into WoW, but I view LOTRO as a grown up more mature and FAR more polished game.

I recently decided to take a break from FFXI, not from boredom exactly, but from some people just ruining the playing atmosphere, by being rude, ignorant and suchforth.

I got the game Saturday, uploaded it (so quick!) and made my first char. Set foot on Snowbourn Server, and I met a kinship that is so polite and helpful, I think it actually shocked me. I think I kinda got used to being talked down upon and insulted by FFXI players, so this was a breath of fresh air for me.

And instead of having to ask for help with quests and gear, and generally being a very helpless newbie, I found I could help others almost from the very start!
I can already make basic armour and people are always asking me to make pieces for them, making me feel a real part of the community already. And I'm only two days in.

When I first started FFXI, I was kinda treated as an inconvenience, good for nothing in particular. LOTRO, I actually feel that my input is appreciated.

May I say a big "Thank You!" to the players of Snowbourn, and especially the Unreal Redemption Kinship, for making me feel so welcome.

Thanks to you guys, this might end up being my permanent place, not just during a break!
