So on a whim and need for "something" to go into since our first try within starcraft didn't fly, we chose PotCO. Crazy fun, I'm still playing. A few of you joined in the fun and actually formed a guild, the pie plunderers.

I'm curious to know what all of your thoughts are on the game? I personally figured it was going to be on the cheesy side, but fun regardless... but not as mind-suckingly addictive that it's turned out to be for me. Anyone else discover surprises about the game?

Is there a free trial to this available? It looks a lot better than Pirates of the Burning Sea to be honest.

There is... the game has two versions. Free, and Pay (Free having limit game content access).

I downloaded it, started playing... it doesn't look fun at all. It's worse than Disney's other "MMO" ToonTown.

Take Toontown online... add pirate skins. There ya go.

Seriously though, it's like Runescape... with pirates, and a "click to swing your sword" combat system.

I'm going to guess that if you disliked toontown then you likely didn't get past the first 2 or 3 minutes of the game.

Much like Shrek, there are elements in it that could really only be understood by an adult. Humour marks, sarcasm, twists of words, etc. It's pure fun, like going sledding down a steep snowy hill or water skiing. Anyone can do it, and its fun to just about anyone who ever does go sledding or skiing.

There is a free to play download. It's the same game, same servers, etc. as the subscription, except there are ads at the top of the game window and a few limitations placed on non-subscribed members, however, there is still much that you can do within the game regardless of the limitations.

Leonai,

I enjoy TT as a fun casual game (30-60 minutes a month?), and I *really* loved PotC from beta 'til now!! It's got a very general funness about the world, the characters and the story that just can't be beat!

Glad you're loving it!!

I thought Toontown was fun as a mini-game type thing. The bingo fishing was interesting. The raids on towers were fun. Despite the obvious heavy anti-corporation, anti-capitalism undertones of the game, it was fun to play around in.

Pirates of the Caribbean is a much worse game than Toon Town.

Cons:

The battle system is clunky. I personally don't like having to use the mouse and keyboard at the same time. Let me do everything with one or the other. (Currently, you move with WASD and attack with the mouse click.)

Even at the lowest settings the game seems very laggy when other people around around.

The range at which you hear other players combat is HUGE, if you are near town, the clash of swords and gun fire is deafening. I wish you could turn this off so you can actually hear yourself and your opponent.

The game is full of kill stealing. You can be in the middle of no where attacking a guard, and suddenly there are 2 people spamming the attack button right next to you, cutting your "Notority" (EXP) earned in half. This is more than likely due to the number of little kids playing not knowing any better, but it'd be nice if the game designers would implement a "claim" system or something. I think even Toontown has a claim system.

Pros:

It's free?

Technically, you can use the ctrl key for swinging instead of your mouse, and alternatively, use the arrow keys instead of WASD.

I haven't noticed any difference in notoriety gain when others contribute vs. not. Rate seems the same regardless if others start "helping" or not.

Toontown doesn't really have a claim system, but only up to 4 can battle at once - though I do find the need to swat players over the head for using backwards tactics, trying to battle the higher levels first, and lower last - when everyone gets greater experience if lower levels are killed first and higher levels stay unharmed until the end.

I would agree that it's somewhat obnoxious about the level of players in a zone causing lag, but hadn't experienced the pain of clashing from miles away issue. They seem to be fairly balanced to me. I wonder if its a difference in hardware usage, or just me not noticing. If it's the latter of the two, I'll likely start noticing and will have you to thank for pointing out something that will now likely annoy me :P

I find many strengths in this game, but my biggest "beef" would be a lack of group UI representation for health meters. I don't want changed colors if you have someone as a "member of my crew" or anything like that, just further indication besides the "friends" window which displays health meters so we all know why "Joey O'Conner" is running away, and assist in getting the bad guys off his back.

I guess it's not so much as far away as it is just on the other side of large objects that annoy me when I heard it.

The most noticeable place is when you log into the game and are at Port Royal. You can hear people spamming gun attacks on the level 1 undead in the graveyard clear on the other side of the warehouse. And the clanking of sword spam on the guard near the jail.

There have been times when I've logged in that I've thought the game was going crazy, the noise was so much and I couldn't even see. The volume of the attack sounds is the same regardless of where I am in relation to the attack, so it makes me feel as if there are tons of people crowded around me spamming attacks.

It would be less noticeable if there were a quieting effect based on distance rather than just a dead "on or off" type thing.

BTW, I logged onto Toontown again because they got rid of the 3 day trial thing. Unfortunately my character is gone, but my new guy can be played forever.
