I picked up the latest offering from Mistwalker Studios, Lost Odyssey for the Xbox 360, yesterday after work. I got into it so much that I forgot to do my homework :O
I'm enjoying it so far. It still has that "console RPG" feel to it that I long for.
It has a fairly standard battle system with a slight twist where you have to hold the right trigger and release it at the right moment during attacks to get the full effect of the attack. There are two different types of characters, immortals and mortals.
Mortals learn skills by leveling up while immortals learn skills from mortals in their party. A nice little twist on teaching your characters skills, but it feels pretty familiar.
It has your standard mysterious, dark, gloomy, and apethetic main hero, Kaim, who knows little to nothing about his 1000 year past. That seems to be a requirement for RPGs these days, barring the 1000 year old part, but I've learned to get over it. He has a female counterpart, Seth, who also can't remember her 1000 year past, but instead of being dark and gloomy, she takes on the slightly flirty/hotheaded woman role. So far there's the also a womanizing douchebag to mix in a little comedy relief so the whole game doesn't feel like it's taking itself too seriously.
The graphics are really quite stunning. The caracter design itself is a little outlandish. Some of the armor the solidiers in the opening scene in the game are were is just plain impractical, but at least it's unique.
Kaim's past is revealed to him and the player in dreams, which are often triggered by seeing something that will remind him of something he has long forgotten. They're not cut scenes though, you have to read them. I read the first one, which was a story about a little girl who lived at her parents inn who was always deathly ill who Kaim used to tell stories whenever he stayed at that inn. It was pretty sad, and probably wouldn't have been as sad if it was just a cut scene because of the way the story was told.

Anyway, Usagi gives it Smiley: thumbsupSmiley: thumbsupSmiley: thumbsupSmiley: thumbsup

I agree with Usagi, picked it up myself yesterday and played for 8+ hours straight last night Smiley: lol I'm really starting to love the micro management that comes with the ring system. Oh and Usagi... that "Dream" is one of the happier ones.....

Agreed %100! First RPG I've liked since Oblivion. It also has the FFVII feel to it too which I love. I have only about three hours playing time but it's safe to say I'll see the end of disk four before putting it down.

I still haven't really sat down and played it yet. I got the very first dream and that's it. I've been too busy playing Call of Duty 4 online Smiley: lol

Almost got it when it was advertised for a week straight on the Ninja game I play, but I was able to resist.

With willpower alone I can resist marketing!!!

This thread made me think of Oddworld for some reason. What ever happened to that series? Smiley: confused
