What a great game. Recently a LS buddy of mine shared a theory about Giygas that has been going around the net (the fetus theory for those that know it). When I played the game many years ago a lot of the hidden themes went over my head.

Anyway, it warrants discussion I think :x

Posting in this thread because it is relative to my avatar. The only other game on the SNES that even comes close is Super Mario RPG.

One of the best SNES games, I remember playing it so much when I was a kid but it is was a shame they never made a sequel to it. They were planning to make on the N64 at one point right?

Mother 2(called Earthbound in the States) was the second in a series of games. From what I can tell the main heroes are all unrelated, there are - to my knowledge - 3 games.

I think all of the games are loosely related. One of the characters from Mother 3 is on Brawl. Mother 3 was originally supposed to be made on the N64 but was scrapped. Sometime later they made a GBA version for Japan only. Currently there are people working on creating an English rom for Mother 3. There are already English roms for Mother 1 I think.

I think there was also an Earthbound racing game, but that might have just been a fan game or a scrapped plan.

I called my favorite food "Sex" when I played it long ago. And other stupid answers that made the last fight funny to my junior high brain.

Anyway, the fetus theory I was referring to follows.

Itoi (creator) has already stated that Giygas's lines during the final battle are actually from a traumatic childhood experience where he walked into a movie in which a woman was being raped. Giygas's lines are based on the victim's lines in the movie. This much is fact, the rest is speculatory.

The final stage of the game is a ******. The Devil's Machine that Giygas resides in is the cervix. If you look at the stage there is an almost too-eerie resemblance. This could be passed off as coincidence on its own though.

Unlock other bosses, there is no graphic for Giygas during the fight. You just see reddish swirls on black in the background scrolling to the side. What you might miss is a very prominent shape that appears in this design: a fetus.

Further, some people claim to hear Giygas's voice saying "Let me out," and "Help me," (people who are apparently unfamiliar with this theory). I can pick them out by they are faint and I have some doubts that it was intentional. Seems like maybe a case of hearing something because you try to hear it.

It follows in the story as well. We are going back to a time when Giygas is weak; we have no chance of defeating him in the present. Doesn't get much weaker than a fetus.

So some people have interpreted all this to suggest that the main characters effectively become abortion robots at the end of the game, killing what may presumably be an unborn person (possibly conceived by rape) who is not, as Pokey says, pure evil (they point out that Pokey lies all the time), but maybe just an unfortunate person that through a hard life inevitably became the equivalent of a thousand Hitlers. Who knows. Further speculation says that when the Devil's Machine is opened, the face that is seen (the main character's) is Giygas's attempt to tell the main character that they could be friends. Perhaps if the baby Giygas had had a friend like the main character, he wouldn't have become the super-evil influence that he supposedly became.

Anyway, interesting theory. I would really like to hear what the creator would say about it.

I love Earthbound! I've probably played the game start to finish at least 100 times. The "******" theory sounds weird to me... but interesting idea.

Was anyone else extremely pissed off when the earthbound sequel (FOR N64) was canned? Completely stupid by the creators IMO.

There is a fan-sub site up and running for Mother 3. Seems like it's getting pretty damn near completion. Anyhow, enter your e-mail for a message once it's complete.

Yeah, they apparently have been having trouble with the programming. I think they even have some amazing people working on the conversion who are baffled by some of the code in the game.

@bsphil, idk man, mosta the time you're an ***, but what can I say. I loves your avatars.

I can't believe there's still discussion about this game. I had it (in fact, my older son still has our old SNES somewhere and he might still have the game). I loved how quirky it was.

I also loved Secret of Evermore, Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, Lufia 2, etc...

I would love to play my old SNES, if my mom hadn't given it away during my freshman year of college. Smiley: mad

My Final Fantasy III (VI) and Super Mario RPG still had the very first files I'd ever played on them. Smiley: frown Emulators are a passable substitute I guess.
