MacBook Pro Bootcamp complete freeze 5mins - 3 hoursFollow

#1 Mar 28 2008 at 9:54 PM Rating: Decent
I have the latest Mac OS which includes bootcamp so I can run a windows partition. My trouble is the game works mostly ok except it freezes completely (i.e. have to use off button to force shutdown) some where between 5mins and 3 hours, usually later. I can put up with it when solo but its really bad for grouping especially as I am minstrel (I go ld usually means wipe). I've tried LOTRO support they can't fix it. I've made level 35 and am looking for a fellowship but don't feel I can commit if I'm going to wipe the group every 1-3 hours. Nvidia site says see computer distributor for support and Mac I can't find the right place to ask. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Sylf

I didn't know LotRO ran on Macs! Geeky!

And I know nothing about fixing it...so I can't help, but I wanted to say welcome to Allakhzam, and hopefully another of our posters can get you pointed in the right direction!

Tovin,

No, LOTRO doesn't run on the Mac's OSx. It runs on Windows which on a Mac can run via a tool called Bootcamp. After all, modern Macs are just overpriced regular Intel based PCs. All Bootcamp does is give's the Mac hardware a virtual BIOS like that found on other PCs. Mac's don't really have a BIOS, but rather a different type of boot strap method to start the OS running.

SylfTwo,

LOTRO is very driver dependant. Do make sure you have the latest and greatest drivers. I hope your Mac is like most and ATI graphics based, as that usually gives a better result many times on certain hardware. (though LOTRO is nVidia supported, go figure) What version of Windows are you running?

Sounds like either the logic board or the hard drive tbh.

Contact Apple and get it sent in for repair (unless you know the repair centre then just get in touch with them, if you stay in the UK let me know and I can give you the name of the one I work for :p)

Run the Apple hardware test as well (put in your install disk and hold H as the mac is booting) or if you can get a copy of Apple Service Diagnostics then run that (only Apple Certified Technicians have them though).

Def sounds like a hardware problem though. If you are def sure though that its not and he hardware test or diagnostics dont show any problem then on your Mac partition click go- utilities and open up grapher, when its opened click examples then select any of the 3d ones (do it a few times, resizing the windows so that you can get more than one on the display). Turn your screen saver and make sure that you dont have the display set to go to off or mac to go to sleep after a certain time. Leave it for the 3 hours or however long it takes on the windows partition and if it crashes then it is def a hardware problem. If not then its a windows problem.

Let me know how you get on and best of luck.

Yes I'm running Vista via bootcamp. Thanks for the advice Garfred. It passed the hardware tests and no crash with graphs running. I don't have any technical knowledge but I got the impression it may be a known problem to LOTRO, just too few Mac players to be worth trying to fix it. It does make a lot more noise running windows, and although there are no warnings I have noticed sometimes I can't alt tab out sometimes. By using the Mac automatic software update will that ensure I'm using the latest drivers?

Thanks,

Sylf
