You will need:
- a ship
- a mining laser (Important stat is "Mining extraction rate")
- cargo hold
(All of this is available via a quest starting with Flash Harrison who is in the cantina in the great tree of Kachiro (Kashyyyk) or from player made equipment is available as well.

DONT FORGET TO EQUIP THEM.

- An Asteroid of the type you want.

Essentially you head up to space, find the type of asteroid you want:

Iron - Tatooine / Corellia
Sulphuric - Naboo
Organometallic - Lok / Kashyyyk / Deep Space
Cyanomethanic - Yavin 4
Carbonaceous - Naboo
Petrochemical - Yavin 4
Methane - Dantooine / Kashyyyk
Silicaceous- Corellia
Acidic - Dantooine
Crystal - Dathomir
Ice - Endor
Obsidian - Lok / Kessel
Diamond - Kessel

Start shooting at the Asteroid (with the mining laser equiped) until you see a large targetable chunk float off it, target that chunk and start shooting until it breaks up into smaller chunks and then shoot those chunks. Once destroyed the smaller chunks will appear in your cargo hold.

Once you have enough or your cargo hold is full land and go to your datapad, target your ship and use the radial menu to reveal two options for any ship with a cargo hold: "View Cargo" and "Unload cargo", hit unload and it will put it in your backpack (make sure you have room or you will lose it).

And there ya have it.

ok. call me dumb. i bought a mark 1 mining laser and a crgo hold for my ship.i equip them. i went up there targeted a resource rock and went to firing ok. i did this for about 5 mins. i went back to the planet. nothing in the cargo hold.
do i have to go to kashyyyk to lean how to do this. i know it's simple but what am i doing wrong. please help.
