Questings regarding graphics, Trial, and client crashes..Follow

#1 May 15 2008 at 10:41 AM Rating: Good
Ok my rig is not so good so im not complaining that the graphics in SWG are bad.. because im pretty sure the constant framerate drops, and bad graphics are because of my graphics card
>32MB ATI 7200 AGP 4x graphics card
First of all is there any kind of graphics card that i can upgrade my rig to use that is atleast better than this one??? I heard of an 128MB ATI 9800 that i can use, so will this make galaxies look like how it does in all the screenshots.. because i am quite impressed with what i have seen on some gaming websites of the graphics on SWG and i want to get it to look like that... So do any PC/SWG experts know if this GPU will work(or if there are any others??) and if it will make SWG look better (4xAA, Shadows, resolution doesnt really matter, med-high quality textures,.. i think you get it lol)...

Also I am a veteran player (MARCH 05), and i was wondering since i downloaded the 14 day trial do i have to pay to keep playing when the 14 days is up. Before i downloaded the trial my account still said pending so that makes me think i still have extra time left to play... Though im still on the Trial restrictions(limited chat time).. I think im willing to keep playing once i get a GPU to hold some decent framerates...

Finally my last question is why does the game keep crashing...?? I heard that im not the only one that this happens to. It is starting to get annoying because i will start playing it may crash anywhere from 10 minutes in to 2 hours in. But after it crashes i will re-open the game and it wont crash again.. this isnt a huge deal like it is to some other people but it is a bit of an inconvenience and SOE should deal with it...

Please answer these questions(any SWG players) and you will have another player to your dying servers that is willing to give this game another shot...

Thanks in advance...

Your main problem with video cards will be finding an AGP one these days but I would suggest that you try someone like

www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010380048+1069609639&name=AGP+4X%2f8X

As far what type of card to use, I don't think it really matters NVidia is my favorite but I also have ATI and have no problems with it but I would be inclined to get the most RAM you can afford on it.

As for the ATI 9800 I am certain it will improve your graphics quality but probably not to website standards.

If you are using your old account name and characters then you will be using the time allowed for veteran returns (14 days), for some reason they have attached them to trial accounts hence the restricted chat.

At a guess and assuming that you had a flawless installation (To check go to the SWG folder and run the TREFix.exe file) I would say that the crash is being caused by fact that you are really stressing your machine to run it (Low HD space and RAM), if you can increase your HD space as much as possible and if you can throw another 512MB of ram into the comp.

Anyway I am sure at some stage someone with more in depth knowledge than me will answer your questions but I just figured I would get things started.

when you are in launchpad and before you click play there is a tab labled OPTIONS click that tab and disable all graphic sounded buttons and disable preworld load and cachaing.

disabling all that like texture baking will free up some resources but your game will look really bad. i used to play this way before i upgraded but for pvp you want the most FPS you can get, PvE u can get away with less FPS and more graphic details. also in game u push O for options and lower all the sliders or disable shadows and a lot of more i cant remember. this and the prelaunch options will free up a lot of CPU/RAM resource and u won't stutter or lag so bad.

i would send in a ticket to customer service and press H for help i think to do this idk i don't crash very often to desktop

the best upgrade to the radeon card, would be to get an nvidia one, their far more reliable, and the drivers tend to be more stable.

I am having the Exact same problem it just seems to crash sporadically sometimes i can stay on until i logoff and sometimes it will crash after 5 min,
but it will certainly crash every day. ive come to expect it now. Tried turning off all the shadows and lowered all visual settings, still didnt help. I like the game but, if i cant play then whats the point?

My system: RAM= Kingston (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300), PROCESSOR = AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ Brisbane 2.2GHz Dual Core, XFX 8600 gt 512 mb pcie video card, Power Supply = 500W ATX12V , HD = 250 gig with a good 100 gig unused. all updated drivers and bios.

ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

... whenever that kind of thing happens, i do several things, firstly, how fragged is your hard drive, its often overlooked, but, run a defrag to make sure.

directx if you've recently updated your video drivers, try installing directx again to make sure its all working as it should.

you didnt say if you were running xp or vista.. vista has a few issues but i have no ideas on them.

power schemes, is your power scheme, on always on?

is your lan card configured for throughput as a priority?

lastly, run a virus check, theres one at trend website, a freebie called housecall, its worth giving it a try just in case something managed to slip through your own.

Thx for the input cloudancer (may the force be with you .. always) , Im running xp 32 bit, im gonna give the defrag and v scan a try, I run scans a few times a week with avg and spyware doctor , but ill try the sight that you wrote about, but the defrag i admit i havent done for a while, any recomendations on a good defrag tool? or is windows defrag good enough?, my power scheme is on home/office desk but settings are all on never, should i just change it to. always on? as far as the lan card and priority i have no idea lol. should it be set to priority?

Thanks again for all of your help.

there are all kinds of tricks to make your computer run better, one of the best ones, is to not use the c drive, for your pagefile, it inevitably gets fragged up and having a fragged page file only makes the computer work that much harder, if you can set aside a 3gb partition on your drive, you can move your pagefile to it, it even makes games run better, a little anyway, but every couple of frames helps;

control panel, select system, select advanced tab, performance settings, advanced, virtual memory,
change the c drive to no page file, and then select another drive, prefereably a 3gb partition, set aside just for the pagefile, or failing that, another partition/drive etc. rather than use a system managed file size, ours has 2.5gb assigned to it.

hope that helps.

Wow i never even considered that before but it does make sense, thx again cloudancer.
still gotta run the defrag but if that doesnt work ill try the partition, ill keep u posted on results. glad to see there are still some considerate peeps on swg, it really helps clean up its tarnished reputation that ive been reading about

OK heres the deal, pretty much nothing worked at all, so i was about to just do a fresh install of my os, but before that i changed my settings from the game options menu on launchpad, i checked windowed mode and borderless window, to my delight i havent crashed yet and i have all the settings turned on some max some medium, dunno if it is a coincidence or just lucky for now that it hasnt crashed but for the past 3 days i havent crashed yet. crossing my fingers that it lasts. still considering a fresh install because i dont like the fact that i cant adjust the gamma brightness and contrast levels in windowed mode, not a big deal tho. but i wanna see if the fresh install will fix the crashes without windowed mode checked. wondering if anyone knows if a fresh install would fix this.

Thx Again

glad to hear your working fine again, computers are strange if wonderful things, sometimes you really need to use some lateral thinking to sort them out :D

Thx cloudancer

Ok. A COMPLETELY Fresh intstallation of my os fixed it completely, so im a happy camper now, it was just wierd why that was the only game that was doing it to me. i had no probs with eq eq2 w.o.w, even nfs carbon ran fine.. but in any case the game is working just fine and i couldnt be happier. i guess i can call it a blessing in disguise because there was obviously something wrong with my os that i never detected.
