I am this hulking barbarian from Cimmeria yet I can't even walk over this 2" high ledge. Let alone scale a hill that even I could climb up. Nope I have to wander the sandy pre-set paths. I definitely feel I am in a more open, can go anywhere, do anything world in WoW
I'll give it a bit more time but right now WoW > AoC for me.

A bit more? The game isn't even out for a month! WoW has had 3,5 years to get things on the rail. It's had its fair share of bugs, silliness and character movement flaws. Imo, Blizz took a wrong turn by implementing all the dailies and putting way too much emphasis on the casual player. By far the majority of players on my server atm are players in S1 doing their dailies. The same activities daily for currency = WORK and not FUN.
In that aspect, AoC is a refreshment. Back to the roots of (MMO)RPG with an innovative combat system and breathtaking graphics in contrast with an increasingly childish cartoony feel in WoW. I mean, with TBC came even worse kinds of ridiculous armour. A blue axe with a blade made up of loose, floating, pink pieces? Man, that is just BAD. A bright green bow with fuchsia parts? Come ON! I remember that at mid sixty every one of my chars looked like it worked in a circus.
I too did frown at the fact that my barbarian can't walk over a ledge, or through some plants, but in most other fields it kicks WoW in the balls. One tap on the space bar and your problem is solved... Funcom will probably fix this at some point and if not, I'm ready to forgive them.
And about walking up hills? In WoW there are plenty of spots where exactly the same thing happens. But in AoC I see a man in full armour with a huge sword on his back, so yeah I can imagine that he's got some trouble getting up a hill. It's not so bad that there are pre-set paths, you can get around things easily - but I mostly end up with a bunch of mobs in my neck.
In short, this is a long post to indicate that I do not agree with you ^_^
