Has anyone played it yet? What are your thoughts - does it live up to the hype?

I just received my copy but I've not had a chance to put the DVD in the drawer yet - I'm at work. I ordered an Xbox 360 controller to go with it but that won't come until Monday now so I'm half-tempted to play with the keyboard but my other half says to wait until the controller comes.

One of my friends has obtained a copy of the game. He has a Geforce 9800 GX2 So he is able to run the game at high settings. I will say the game looks very pretty. I didn't play it, and I didn't see much of the game, but from wha tI saw a controller is quite needed. It's realistic in its driving, so it is quite easy to over steer and turns are not meant to be taken at full speed.

To me the game didn't look very fun, but I'm not a racing game fan and I certainly did not have much experience to judge it on. The only notable feature seemed to be the rewind function, which although impressive looking, is just a really fancy way of doing save states in a game. I would have preferred missiles, coils, greens shell, or at least some bumping between cars, but this isn't that type of game.

i only have one question about this game, and maybe you can answer it for me Leodis. Is there a setting for a clutch?

Havent seen a game with a clutch since TOCA race driver and i think that was on regular XBox.

upon GOOGLING the game, i found its made by the same people who did TOCA and pro race driver, codemasters. Those games were the best racing games ive ever played from a pure driving perspective. Without playing this, i can say with some certainty that it is awesome. i need to go get this!

also, how did you already get it? thought it came out next week. some europe thing?

Yeah, who'd have thought it? Normally Europe gets things later than the US but not this time. I only ordered it Wednesday, it was sent yesterday and I received it today - the EU release day.

As for the clutch, I'll tell you tomorrow. My guild is doing kara tonight so I doubt I'll get as far as reading the instructions.

on TOCA i would turn the clutch option on and just drive laps by myself. I couldnt really use it well, but it was just fun to do in a game and was something never really done before.

Sorry, it doesn't look like there's a clutch option. I can't wait until my 360 controller comes on monday because keyboard driving really sucks. The steering's either on full lock or nothing, same goes for the gas and brake pedals.

Yeah, necro I know... beats a new thread though.

I just DLd the demo for this last night on my 360... i would like to say, "WOW!" The in-car cam is absolutely amazing and the physics are sweet.

Very very similar to Dirt in design, and the steering is a bit sensitive, but that can be gotten used to. Wish I had some money so I could go buy it.

Another thing i noticed, (this may seem dumb) but when the wheels get up to speed they arent replaced by a default model that just spins fast. it stays with the real wheel model. Thats a little thing that has always bothered me with past titles like Forza 2.

Unplayabe for me without a wheel. It's likely I just suck, though.

It's not just you, the game is unplayable without a wheel or at the very least, a joypad. I use the xbox 360 controller, myself.

I'm actually looking for a racing game, which would be best?

Criteria:

Normal cars, but mixed track and street racing.

Start off with crappy Japanesse POS and work up to better cars improving engines, gearbox, and such like.

Semi realistic damage i.e smash it up and it effect handling.

PC i don't have/want a console.

Enlighten me X generation.

I don't think such a game exists but if it did, it'd be great - I know I'd buy it.

The Need for Speed series did this, the best one of the series being NFS: Most Wanted - start off with a choice of Euro POS, American POS or Japanese POS, then get upgrades and/or new cars.

All the cars are branded, so you've got the real names - Fiat, Pontiac, Mitsubishi, Porsche, etc. You also get semi-realistic damage through flat tyres but that's the limited extent of it.

For more realistic damage, you've got to look at the (TOCA) Race Driver series, though that's racing cars and race circuits.

I've yet to see a game that mixes track and street racing.

No worries there. There are a few console-only games but AFAIK none fit the other criteria you have either. Gran Turismo 5 on the PS3 (not the prologue taster version) might cover most of the criteria but it won't have any street racing as far as I know.

That's largely GRID. You start with a Dodge viper, but then hire yourself out as a driver to various teams with cars ranging from a Ford Focus to open wheel race cars. When you accumulate enough cash, you buy your own pos car and build it up. There's a mix of street and track races.

That said, I wouldn't play it without a wheel/pedal unless you're very used to managing driving games with a controller.

The logitech cheap one.

Not the logitech $300 one:

It'd be nice, but I can't possibly justify spending that much for a video game controller.

Never played it, but i just stumbled on http://www.lfs.net/?page=moreabout today. Might be worth a DL to try it out.

I have played http://www.gamespot.com/pc/driving/tocaracedriver3/review.html on XBox and it was incredible, however there is no customizing your car, just tuning. Its a well made game, and only 20 bucks.
