I am in the process of installing and going to do the 30 day free trial. I have heard great things about this game and after 2 years of FFXI I need a change. How hard is it to find the equivalent of a linkshell? How is the crafting system compared to FFXI? Is the community friendly?

Thanks for any help you can provide!

I played ffxi for almost 3 years and was glad to find how different this game is. You should have no trouble finding a kinship(linkshell) and should check out the official lotro server forums if you want to apply to one that appeals to you instead of trial and error in the game. I find crafting very easy. There is no guess work or research involved. You learn the recipe and can see all ingredients needed right in front of you. Also as long as you still need a 'skill up' anything you craft in that tier will you give one. No more endless hours of crafting hoping for a .1 skillup now and then.

I played FFXI for 5 years and so did a number of players in our Kinship. All agree that in a head to head comparison LoTRO is the better game on nearly every level (unless you're into the whole stand in one spot for hours waiting for a mob to pop thing).

Kinships are pretty easy to find, there are a good many of them on each server.

To answer a question you had in another thread you don't need a buddy pass to join a server, just choose it when you log in.

If you join the Meneldor server, you can look me up and I'll try to help as best I can with questions and a kinship to get you started.

I also played FFXI for about 5 years. I did the trial, following a link from Penny Arcade, because I wanted something new. That's what I got. It's a great game with a completely different playstyle, without the overcrowding of WoW. I love it, and agree with everything other posters said.

Anyone and everyone should give this game a try. Seriously.

I come from FFXI and from WoW. I think it is better than FFXI and a little below WoW only because I am used to WoW and am spoiled by all of the add-ons and such. However I love LOTRO for the lore and it just seems very casual to me and fresh since I have leveled so many toons on WoW.

I used to play FFXI for a few years off and on. I also played WoW and EQ2. I've tried the trials of SWG and Eve Online. If you liked WoW or EQ2 then you probably will like Lotro. If you hated WoW or EQ2, you'll most likely hate this game as well. Lotro, EQ2 and WoW are very similar in game design and play. The only notable differences are the content, lore and community.

I been getting sick of all the boring MMO games. I figured ok I'll try coming back to some other game I tried. Lotro has a sale if you buy 3 or more months subscription, so I gave that a try. I find my self walking away from the game. Maybe I am just getting burned out from online gaming. Opinions vary, but I do find Lotro to be too much like WoW and Eq2 in game design and play and it really just bores me. I feel like a idiot for wasting $30 to see if I might feel differently this time, and I don't. =/

My highest character is level 27, doesn't seem like much and I'm only as far as book 3. If you have any ideas other than quitting, I'm open for suggestion. I got 3 months on this game, I want to make the best of it.

I've played FFXI for 6 years, and still play it on top of this. I love both, FFXI is for the challenge-loving side of me, and lotro is for the side of me that wants a more luscious environment and fun.

I played FFXI for about four years. LoTRO I've played for roughly 3 months.

There are times I miss FFXI, and want to go back. I sometimes think I rushed into buying my LoTRO lifetime account because it's been about 3 months and I don't see the game holding my attention as long as FFXI did.

With that being said, I enjoy how easy LoTRO feels in comparison to FFXI. I quite enjoy the PvMP as well, even if I do complain about it a lot.

Well, it's always going to be subjective. I can only offer an opinion given my experience playing both games and offer what comparisons I feel are pertinent - mileage will vary.

General MMO related experience: As a previous player of Final Fantasy XI for approximately 9 months, a player of LOTRO for a good five months (four months at launch, then quit, recently returned) and approaching this from a time spent/reward perspective, I can confidently state that you will find LOTRO much more rewarding: you can level and establish your character more rapidly and in a more organic-feeling manner. You can travel far across the game and see more in much less time. Best of all there's hardly any waiting around for groups; the solo game in LOTRO is solid and robust, and most group content requires small groups. If you are looking for lots of group play, however, do yourself a favor and choose Brandywine as your home. Good, deep population of great players.

Next comes the community. Both are great and helpful.

Side jobs, such as crafting and hobbies - I think LOTRO does a much, much better job. And, all crafting and gathering skills appear to have a legitimate and desired place within the virtual economy of LOTRO. In FFXI I felt like it took too long to produce or gather, and in the end the rewards did not accurately match the time spent.

Audio and visual: it's going to come down to personal tastes. I personally prefer LOTRO. LOTRO looks very good with DirectX 10 and sufficient system power (your average gaming rig will suffice). The world is extremely well realized, even moreso than FFXI in my opinion. You can get lost for hours just wandering about soaking in The Shire or Bree. The stylized art is amazing to behold - and I'm not just saying that, it's truly remarkable for this genre. And that's just a small portion of Middle Earth represented within the game. As far as audio is concerned, LOTRO offers much stronger and diverse sound effects, music, and environmental acoustics.

Gameplay: tough to give a fair comparison. I remember FFXI being very much about "the grind" and group-centric gameplay, where as LOTRO offers an immense amount of solo play with content-driven instances and fellowship (group) quests mixed in. Neither, I recall, have very robust PvP. So, this is very much up to your own personal tastes.
