Hell Unfreezes Over: Blizzard Confirms Diablo 3

diablo_3_splash.jpg

The ice sheath splash has finally melted, it's now official, and while I'm not exactly barreled over by the announcement because I've always felt a trifle conflicted about the merits of the Diablo series, I'm definitely intrigued.

What I (and plenty of others) speculated might happen came to pass at approximately 12:18 p.m. on June 28th at the Blizzard Worldwide Invitational in Paris, France, where Blizzard finally confirmed that yes, Diablo 3 is in the works, eight prolonged years after Diablo 2, and over a decade after the original gave oceans of relentless finger-tappers a conduit for their compulsion.

Don't believe me? Peep the the Blizzard homepage Flash splash (if you can get it to come up once folks on this side of the pond start to rise and shine).

diablo_3_splash2.jpg

What else do we know so far? Not much, but Blizzard says it's going to be the biggest Diablo yet, that it's going to retain the series focus on cooperative play, and that it'll feature the return of Deckard Cain (the old dude from the last two who crooned "Stay a while, and listen!" when you clicked him). You'll also get a new class called the Witch Doctor who'll have access to jungle magic and be able to summon animals and insects, inflict diseases, and mind-control enemies.

As the game is now finally fully 3D, you'll be able to zoom in or out on the fly. The interface has been unsurprisingly tweaked with onscreen hotbars for skills as well as the option to swap between them quickly with the tab key or your mousewheel. Instead of quaffing potions like Professor Snape on a bender, you'll roll over red orbs to replenish your health. Environments can be pretty thoroughly pulverized, as well as utilized to effect the destruction of enemies. Certain enemies will be considerably larger, finally filling the screen like proper boss monsters. Armor now relates to class and renders uniquely depending on the character wearing it. And girls, you'll finally have the option to pick female versions of character classes, including the Barbarian and Witch Doctor.

diablo_3_witch_doctor.jpg

Check out the new official page which has slightly more info, and some of the official story details and features below:

Two decades have passed since the demonic denizens, Diablo, Mephisto, and Baal, wandered the world of Sanctuary in a vicious rampage to shackle humanity into unholy slavery. Yet for those who battled the Prime Evils directly, the memory fades slowly and the wounds of the soul still burn.

When Deckard Cain returns to the ruins of Tristram's Cathedral seeking clues to new stirrings of evil, a comet from the heavens strikes the very ground where Diablo once entered the world. The comet carries a dark omen in its fiery being and it calls the heroes of Sanctuary to defend the mortal world against the rising powers of the Burning Hells--and even the failing luminaries of the High Heavens itself.

- Explore a fully-realized Sanctuary--the living, breathing gothic fantasy world of Diablo III rendered in gorgeous 3D.

- Battle the unholy forces of the Burning Hells with all-new character classes like the otherworldly Witch Doctor, or with re-imagined warriors from Diablo's past: such as the fierce Barbarian.

- Rain Hell on your enemies wielding the interactive environment as a weapon: lay cunning traps, turn destructible objects against your foes, and use environmental obstacles to your advantage--all powered by the Havoc physics system.

- Experience the intensity of multiplayer Diablo III over an all-new, wickedly-enhanced Battle.net platform with numerous enhancements to make connecting with your friends easier--and cooperative gameplay more fun.

The rumor is true, its all over X-play right now. Poor Adam wants Diablo 3 so bad right now!

Blizzard announced it, but they also said it's too early to announce a release date Smiley: motz
#7 Jun 28 2008 at 8:38 AM Rating: Decent
Well, I guess this combined with Starcraft 2 is good enough reason to buy a new computer for the first time in about...7-8 years, I believe I've had this one.

And yes, this is right on par for Blizz to announce no release date.
#8 Jun 28 2008 at 8:44 AM Rating: Decent
The rumor going around is that SC2 will be released just before 2009 comes around. This rumor came from the same guy that said diablo 3 was going to be announced very soon about a month ago.

That would put Diablo 3's release date around mid 2009.

This is all just speculation though :(. Damn you blizzard, not even a ballpark date.

Still too early to tell what it will be like...

But good to see Blizzard is trying to get out of Warcraft for a while and return to its other games like Diablo and Starcraft.... Yeah yeah, i know Warcraft was what made Blizzard Blizzard, but damnit... Diablo and Starcraft also had a nice hand into making it what it is today :o That and the uniqueness of how things are in Diablo, no two people wearing the exact same thing, is something I wanna see again.

Wow, that's wild.

I was sorta afraid they would release "World of Diablo" or something as the next "installment" to the series instead. :P

That's really cool though. Those games were always a blast, and I have had to play ripoffs like Sacred to get my fix for a while (though that game is fun too).

Site is interesting. Can't help but notice that you can click the little gem on and off.... >:P

That assures me it's going to be a good game.

I've never really played much diablo, but a friend of mine used to be obsessed with it. I've dabbled in WoW a bit, so I know blizzard puts together a solid package.

I just hope that it comes to consoles...those champions of norrath and baldur's gate games were hugely successful and i still prefer console gaming to pc gaming.

I'm boned. Diablo 2 was the bane of my university life, half our dorm floor raided together over Bnet... I successfully avoided WoW, but when D3 comes out, I will once again become Blizzard's *****.

If Amazon makes a comeback with freezing arrow/lightning javelin like skills, they will have to invent a new shade of white to match the color of my skin.

Just because WoW was made by Blizzard doesn't make it a good game. I think FFXI has WoW beat personally. WoW was just appealing to the masses I think and blizzard cared way too much about what other people thought. They didn't think about what was best for their MMO.

WoW was probably the only Blizzard title I skipped out on. And I don't regret it.

This part seems a lot like WarCraft III: Reign of Chaos doesn't it...? Weren't they fighting a war and all of the sudden a comet comes down and it's a huge green rock monster and it owns em all. Kinda wish they used another concept then the 'comet'.

Hopefully gameplay stays free like the previous ones.

And as long as they keep "You now speak to Ormus!". Followed up by "You astound me my friend!" As you've found the horadric cube for the 50th time.

Ok, now if I was ever offered a quest to beat Diablo and/or Baal I'd simply say "F*ck that ****, I'm not being no demon's b*tch!"

Seriously, does a trend of the heroes turning nuts have to happen? Seems a bit cruel.

Also, Dranei level. Forget cows, god-cows are where it's at!

Don't be stupid. If a game developer, or any programmer for that matter, is not creating their game for the fans or for the people who are planning on using it, then it's a completely failed game/program. WOW's success rides on Blizzard's reputation of being one of the best game developers; the Warcraft universe already having a decade of story, five(?) games, and several books behind it; and purely for the fact that it's a very well-made game.

If you don't like the "watered down" MUMORPUGERS, that's your prerogative, but calling WOW a bad game or inferior to every other game of its genre pretty much flies in the face of every single statistic and review.

Fact: I have never enjoyed a single game Blizzard has produced.

Opinion: I will probably dislike Diablo III as well. (Especially since watching the gameplay trailers makes me think they should just rename the game "gibs everywhere, ok?")
