A few questions before I sign up to LOTRFollow

Hey guys,

So I left my PC downloading the trial version of LOTR overnight and it's complete. At the moment I'm at work and looking forward to adventuring tonight. A friend of mine has also downloaded the trial.

We both come from AoC, game was great but too many bugs and not enough content at the moment. We also used to play WoW.

Anyway, So I have a few questions regarding LOTR.

1. Is the game set out like WoW, where you can basically run across the entire world without having EVERYTHING instanced. Anyone who has played AoC knows what I mean. In AoC once 50+ players enter a zone a new instance of that zone is created. Therefore not everyone can see you, unless you change instances.

2. I am the kind of player that enjoys to explore the world. Does LOTR let you explore on your own. I do enjoy partying up too but I don't want to have to wait an hour or more until I find a group just to move up another level.

3. If anyone has played WoW...I'm sure most have, why would you rather stick to LOTR instead of WoW?

4. I am from Australia, are there any recommended oceanic servers? Does LOTR run on a 24hr time zone? If so, is there one that follows the oceanic time zone?

Last question. Now I am sure this question gets asked by every n00b but what server would you say is the most popular? I heard Brandywine is one of the popular ones. can anyone confirm this?

I am sure that when I start playing tonight most of these questions will get answered but at the moment I'm at work and I want to know as much as I can before I go online.

Thanks in advance guys!

Looking forward to your responses.

1. The world of LOTRO is not instanced, it is seamless between zones like World
of Warcraft.

2. I am level 31 and barely ever group up. The exceptions are certain "epic" and
"fellowship" quests. They're completely optional, however.

Exploring the world is also one of my favorite ways to spend time in the game.
It's dangerous if you try to explore areas far above your level, but hey, that's
half the fun right?

3. My opinion: The community in LOTRO is much better. The audio and visual is
much stronger and makes for a more immersive experience. I find the design of
the world to much more expansive and better realized. Combat is more involved.
Monster play is a nice deviation from the basic formulaic PvP system in WoW. I
could go on all night on this one.

4. Brandywine is a good server for Aussies I hear. It's well populated. I also
hear that Landroval has a good Australian community. Turbine schedules downs for
US EST, I think 7 AM - 11 AM Mondays (I never play at that time, so I'm not 100%
sure).

5. Brandywine, it's awesome

Also, look me up on Brandywine if you need help. Name is, of course, Alewise.

Hey fellow adventurous,

Firstly, I'd like to thanks Alewise for that excellent response. My in game name is "Frostlas". Thanks for the help and I may add you to "friends list" in case I have a random n00b question. :P

So last night I finally booted up LOTR, and was greeted by an amazing trailer. Once I turned the graphics up to "Ultra High" it was time to create my character. I ended up creating an Elf Male Hunter. I joined the Brandywine server and my origin (starting area), Rivendell.

First impressions were up there. As soon as the game loaded and I started to fight my first mob, I thought "This looks really good".

I quested both solo and with another player last night and I must say the game's atmosphere is breath taking. Also the graphics really help immerse yourself in this world. I came from AoC, the graphics in that game are the best I have seen in any MMO, but graphics don't always make the game.

So I finally reached level 6 after completing all quests in the starting area and am ready to move onto the next. My adventures to middle earth will continue tonight! :P

I also have a few more questions now that I have a better understanding of the game.

Is there a main city in this game where most people gather? I was running around the starting area last night and I did see a few people running around but I'm sure there must be a main area where everyone hangs out. Could someone tell me where the main city is and how long until I can get my character there? Can I get there now?

OK, I haven't died yet but could someone explain to me what happens when you die? Do you have to run back to your body?

Last question, I noticed that when I right click on the icon near "Say" and chose OOC, I am assuming this is world chat... no one responded when I said can anyone see this? So, how do I bring up the interface where I can see everyone talking in the server? Is it because I am on a trial account I can't see this? Or is it because I'm in the starting area?

I have also played Final Fantasy XI before and realize that you needed a linkshell (guild) in order to get the most out of having people to talk to. Is it the same in LOTR? Do I need to join a guild in order to have heaps of players to talk to?

Thanks in advance

Yes, Bree. Esteldin is also fairly busy, as a lot of people set their map points there for crafting. Bree is by far the main city at the moment.

Before level 10, nothing really happens. You release and spawn at one of the stone circles that are all around. After level 10, you will start to take a durability hit, just like in WoW. You never have to run back to your corpse, but you will however accumulate a certain amount of "dread". Dread is a crippling fear that lowers your morale, and makes everything seem darker. It only lasts for about 10 minutes.

Most people in this game are VERY friendly. However, if I were to have seen you type something like that in the OOC channel, I probably would have just chuckled to myself and moved on. Nothing personal :)

OOC = Out Of Character - RPers use this to talk about things that don't relate to the game.

Advice - This is the channel where you want to ask questions.

LFF = Looking For Fellowship - Ask here if you are having issues with a quest, or would like help with one.

There are others, but those are the ones you will use at first.

Yes, they are called Kins. I'm on Meneldor with most of the other Alla posters, but I'm sure someone here will have a good reccomendation for Brandywine.

Cheers.

Thanks for the informative reply Saaru!

So I'm level 8 at the moment and running around questing.

I just have one question. Can anyone explain to me how to get to the "City of Bree" or "Esteldin"? Seeing as these cities seem to be quite active I wouldn't mind taking a look.

The area I am questing in at the moment is around Celondim. Could anyone give directions from here or possibly a link to a site that can help? I am sure my quests will eventually lead me to both these locations, but would be good If I could get there now. Also what level do you normally need to be to get to The City of Bree?

Thanks!

You would be unlikely to survive a trip to Esteldin at your current level. Bree is however an entirely different matter!

When you're in Celondim, you should see a rental horse guy right near the road that leads out of the village.

Chat him up and he should offer you a 1s ride to any of the other starting areas. If he doesn't have an option for Bree itself (I can't remember for sure) Take the option for a ride to Archet, Combe or Staddle. (any of these will do)

From there you should be able run to Bree without dying.

You can see a large area map of Breeland (including the 3 towns I listed) HERE
