As long as it's also on the PS3, I don't really mind all that much.

A bigger spread will lead to a bigger sale, more money to keep the games coming. Granted, as some say that this is a sign that the game won't be using all of the PS3 possibilities.

I have a hard time believing square will make FF an Xbox exclusive franchise. Their main market is Japan and if I recall correctly xbox isn't all that popular over there.

It's not an X-Box exclusive, just not a PS3 exclusive anymore. Or at least according to some sites I read anyway, I have heard this before though.

This was probably part of their decision to try to open up into the North American Market. Xbox seems to be super popular in the west. I really wouldn't know, I only play PC MMO's

The thing that really sucks is the "simultaneous release" part.

Why?

SE said at their FaQ that it is currently only being developed for the Japanese PS3.

Once it is done and released there, THEN they will start to port it over to the American PS3. It isn't until they start this process that they are going to start the development for the XBox 360.

So, we get a later release date.

It would have been better if they released it for the PS3 first, boosting the console's sales and letting the public have it sooner, then releasing it for the XBox 360 down the road. I don't want to wait for them to finish stripping down the 360 version to get mine...

I'm just happy that it isn't getting a simultaneous development. The XBox is actually the major hinderance with cross-console development. Developers are forced to design their games with the limitations of the lower tier systems, thus never utilizing the potential of the best 360s and the PS3.

Why? Because the cheapest 360 doesn't include an HD drive, limiting the default graphics potential, where development entirely in HD and Blu-Ray would be nice. It also doesn't necessarily have a Hard Drive, so they have to limit how they can utilize that.

Devil May Cry 4 at least started to understand that they could use the PS3's capabilities after the fact, but the 360 owners with a Hard Drive still got screwed.

Developing on the PS3 and then porting to the Xbox 360 is the way to go, imo. It allows for the PS3 users AND the 360 users with better systems to use them to the fullest, but would still be able to give the lower-tiered 360 users a chance.

The biggest problem is that they would need to release 2 versions on the 360, confusing matters...

This is the most boring "console war" ever. How many *good* exclusives have there been? 5?

Tales of Symphonia 2

If it has the battle-gameplay like the first one, I might not even get near it. While I did love the first, I hate not being able to control all of my characters, it feels as if the computer might try to cheat me out of a move.

I don't understand why Square-Enix would wish to keep a title like 13 on the PS3. SE stands to make a lot more money by it not being exclusive.

they get paid alot of money by the console manufacturer to be exclusive, this means instant payback against production costs which = happy shareholders.

Yeah and I understand this, but for the most part, highly anticipated games like FFXIII would sell so many copies on multi-platform it kind of nullifies the incentive to stay exclusive. I'm sure this is the case with Sony not being able to convince someone somewhere along the line with chucking out another however many mil when they've already lost billions on the PS3. Especially in the case of the PS3 which has only sold around 13 million units worldwide-to-date.

Regardless, I've pretty much lost faith in the Final Fantasy franchise. IMO, they have been utter ***** since IX. The only saving grace on XI is the fact that it's a MMO.

they were at 13 million around late march.

which was actually a pretty good number, considering thats about1 year, 4months, and only a year after the worldwide.

I'm more concerned about KH3 than a new FF title. They have gone downhill since IX. XII was too much like the MMO. Camping NM in a single player game?

From what I have read they are releasing 3 versions of FFVIII.

FFXIII for the DS
FFXIII for Xbox/PS3
FFXIII Versus for PS3 only.

Versus is supposed to be almost the same with different main characters etc, still slightly exclusive I guess?

http://na.square-enix.com/e306/titles/fabula/versus/

From this CGI movie it looks more interesting than XIII itself.

Kind of late to the party but...

If you watched the video from E3 anouncing FFXIII's release onto the 360 it says "In North America"

I have a feeling that the Japanese market might only get a PS3 copy of the game. This kind of make sense because 360 sales in Japan are really really low so why even publish the title on a format that not many folks will buy.

I'm personally looking forward to not having to buy a PS3 now.

Actually "late march 2008" was just 1 year after the worldwide release of the ps3. The Europe/Oceania launch date was 23 March 2007.

Believe me, they have a lot of accountants going over the potential sales on the XBox 360, and they can do a startling good job. You better believe that SE was asking more than that amount to keep it only on the PS3 because that also helps Sony in the long run keep more 360s on the shelves.

However, Microsoft, it's being speculated, offered a crazy amount of money to get a port of it. This move has next to nothing to do with America, and everything to do with Japan. Microsoft needs something to happen soon in Japan with the 360, or they will forever be the distant 3rd place (like the Gamecube was in America).

With huge 3rd party games like the Final Fantasy franchise, it's all about long-term strategies for the system manufacturers. Sony has obviously been paying so much to keep FF on its systems, it has probably been chalking up near losses, even after licensing fees. However, in the long term, they make back huge profits from the decision. That's what talented executives get paid for: making the financially frightening decisions that pay off in spades. Final Fantasy was one of the vital pillars that made the first 2 Playstations the juggernauts they were.
