Does anyone here use Gametap? I've been thinking about stopping my gamefly subscription, and picking up a gametap scrip. I'm assuming that they have some sort of frontend program that you download that gives you access to all the games. What I'm really wondering is if they have some sort of bittorrent client kind of thing for downloading the games. I'm guessing that you have to download most if not all, of the game data in order to play it, but I would hate to start downloading Thief 3, and have to wait two days to finish the install before playing.

Apparently no one in the history of the internet has used this service. I'm amazed they're still in business.

Friend of mine used "GameznFlix" but apparently they suck *** and didn't send him anything after the first couple months, but still charged him. I'm sure a more well known service would be more worth it assuming they will continue to send you stuff.

I use Gamefly right now, it's like netflix for games, but gametap is an online thing where you can download and play a crapton of PC, emulated games, and arcade games.

I really just want to play Thief 3 again, and all the Sam and Max episodes, but I don't want to pay steam for them individually.

Why don't you just get both Nix?

Me and Leo have actually discussed this. But alas, I don't have the sleek, musclebound, methwrought body that I had when I was working at the bar, so who knows how successful I'd be now. Smiley: glare

Ive been to the secret Pirate Bay before. But only after I sailed the seven seas and traveresed large mountains and such. When i arrived it was an explosiong of euphoria as found all the pirate booty and rum I wanted, but sadly they did not have the one sacred artist I was looking for. So I set sail again in search of a new island/bay/fjord/inlet/tributary/sea/gulf/beach/ocean/pond/lake/river/stream/creek/delta/reef/sandbar to find said treasure.

Rather then creating a new topic, I'll see if I can get some answers from here.

How is the service for those mail-game services? I've read some reviews and have heard that a lot of them are based in the west coast, and can take a while (as long as two weeks) to get something all the way to the southeast.

Is the service reliable? Can always get the games you want? Never having any billing problems (them saying you've still had a game out when you sent it back to them a month ago)?

Gamefly is probably the largest of the games-by-mail services. I've had an account with them since they started. At first, their mailing process took nearly two weeks to return a game and have a new one dropped in your mailbox. It was abysmal. They have opened a few new centers since then, I believe they're up to four, and that helped cut the turnaround times to around a week or so. It's still not the one to two days that Netflix can brag about, but it's good enough for me, and even easier to cope with if you have a multi game plan.

On the site, you set up a queue, like netflix, and when you return one, the next in line on your list gets sent out. They have an availability stat on their games that let you see how many they have in stock right then. I think their process is, a game is returned to them, they check the next game on the list, if they have a copy in, they send it out, if they don't, they wait till the next mail drop-off (aka about 24hours), if your top game isn't returned, they move on to the next one on your list. But, if the next one on your list is also out of stock, they immediately skip downward until a game you want is found in the inventory.

There are some other bonuses with gamefly. They have a "buy it" option for a good number of their games. Where you can buy it, at a used price. Their prices are really good, they were usually right around, if not lower than gamestop prices. If you have an account for a long enough time, you gain levels that top out at three, these levels offer different benefits. At level three, IIRC, I get 10% off all used games, and a 5$ coupon every three months. (which expires three months later, so in reality, I have one 5$ coupon that refreshes every three months if I use it)

Gamefly is a steadily growing company, and they have plans on opening more and more centers, and I'm willing to bet that in the future, they may be able to come close to Netflix's quick turnaround times.

Also, I know I can use torrents to find games to my heart's content, but you know what? I'm ******* lazy. And admit it, if you really want that super hard to find game, and you want to pirate it, it's going to be a giant chore. And with Gametap, there is no chance that they will knowingly transmit any sort of viruses snuggled in their games.

Well, I just started my account with GameTap and so far, so good. The game selection screens leave a little to be desired, the games are displayed in an arc, which just doesn't look all that great, but other than that, it's smooth and slick. Download times are fairly fast, I put every episode of Sam and Max into my download queue, they average between 100 and 200MB, and the first episode was ready in about 10 minutes. You can only have one active download at a time though, which is kind of a bummer, but not a deal breaker for me.

They have a direct link from every game to a forum area supporting that game where you can go if you have problems with installing, or other bugs, they even have a link to any known issues with the games. The whole package is well presented.

There are some added benefits that I wasn't aware of when I jumped in. They have daily challenges and contests and such, some with prizes, some not. They have a forum that upon first glance seems to be rather mellow, I'm assuming that it is heavily moderated, but the community seems to be fairly chill. Some of their games are "Challenge" games, where you can play against other people online. If you're a fan of old fighters like Street Fighter (and many of it's incarnations) or Samurai Showdown, or King of Fighters, they have a great number of them in Challenge mode. There are some older atari era games, some bubble bobbles, and many more as well, I'm looking forward to some multiplayer fun.

Hey, another episode of Sam and Max is ready.

I'm more impressed with GameTap so far than my jaded heart thought I would be. Smiley: thumbsup

I tried gametap a long time ago. At the time the only thing they really had was basically the same games you could download as roms for various emulators. However they do have a program you download and you use it to play all of the games. At least at the time that is how it worked.

I don't blame you for losing interest in Gamefly. I had them for a few months and any time a new game came out that was the least bit popular it took over a month to get it. They also seemed slow on shipping and receiving. There at the end I had 5 games in my queue and it took 5 days to ship one due to not having any in stock.

I have considered giving Gametap another try though. It looks like they have added alot of stuff to it.

I used Gametap a few months ago, but not as a paid subscriber. I got it to play a game they advertised you could play for free on TV. I think it was for Samurai Showdown. Well, I downloaded the client, which took a few minutes and then I chose the game I wanted to play. Within seconds, it was playing. No idea how this works. However, SS is an older game, and could not be that big.

I don't know how games like Jericho would work on it, or if there is a big install wait. My best advise is to tell you to try it. Go to their site, and choose to play one of their free games. I think they have some semi-modern games you can play for free. Even if it is an older game, like Blood Rayne, you could still get an idea as to how long it would take to download and play a game that was on DVD. If a more modern game like that installs fast, I would assume most other large-file games will, too.
